Historical Traveller Reviews of Ibis Brussels Grand'Place Hotel

Decent Hotel, Great Location

from plainjane72
Received a great rate during a holiday break ($79 weeknights). Much preferred Novotel nextdoor but their prices went up significantly during the week. Hotel felt like well kept Best Western (not to be confused with the actual Best Western next door). No hair dryers, no coffee, no mini bar but clean. Great location, square is noisy so see if you can face the back. Very near Gare Central. Steps from Grand Place. Many breakfast restaurants right outside hotel so no need to buy breakfast package.

Excellent - relaxing and useful hotel

from U.K.Moose
Arrived on a very wet day. Very friendly and helpful hotel staff. Excellent location for the Grand Place, the restaurant area, shops and the Ancien Belgique concert venue where we were going that evening. Very comfortable room and perfectly adequate breakfast. Highly recommended!

Very good

Great location, near Central Station (good if you come from the airport) and Grand Place. Rooms are not 5 stars, but good enough. Good breakfast. Did not have any probelams with the nose (and i am a bit picky..). Very good experience.

Superb hotel with excellent value

from RealGiantPanda
This was an excellent hotel, escpecially for the price. Out of 5 hotels we stayed during this latest Europe trip, I would rate this the best.

First, location. The hotel was 2 blocks away from the train station and 1 block away from Grand Place, and right next to the Galleria mall. There was no shortage of shops, stores, or restaurants around, including a whole street of seafood places.

Second, the hotel staff were extremely helpful. They even had a service policy of responding to your queries in 15 min. or the stay is free. I wish American hotels would do that - at a Mariott recently I had to call twice to get something.

The room itself is very nice. The decoration is simple but functional. They have a TV with many channels, a very useful closet, and a very nice and clean bathroom. [You have to be careful the bathtub gets somewhat slippery after taking a shower.] A nice feature is this double door - the room door opens to a small hallway. The bathroom door can swing all the way and shut out this hallway from the room at night, so you hear nothing from the inside of the hotel.

We had a problem with the window - couldn't close properly, but they sent someone to fix it immediately. I was also concerned, after reading some reviews, about the mattress being too soft. It seems the hotel has upgraded its mattresses since then, for we found this mattress very firm - the most comfortable mattress we had out of 5 European hotels.

Overall I would stay there again, and I would visit Brussels again - very nice and interesting city.

Noisy Noisy Noisy

I've stayed in IBIS hotels before and for the price they represent good value and, like a Big Mac, you know what you're getting for your money. So I was happy to choose IBIS for a one night stay in Brussels. Big mistake!

Apart from the fact that it was expensive for an IBIS (129 Euro) it is situated in a small square near the Grand Place. This square has to be one of the noisiest places on the planet. My wife and I hardly slept all night there was so much noise coming off the square. Between cars honking, drunks shouting, music, delivery trucks, police sirens etc etc I don't think there was a quiet moment all night. My wife is normally a heavy sleeper and never hears anything but this was one hotel that beat her.

In 30+ years of travelling I don't think I ever stayed in a noisier hotel. A few days before this I stayed in the Jolly hotel in Berlin which was next to one of the main train stations and I hardly heard a thing thanks to the soundproofing.

And beware - the Novotel is in the same square so that might be just as noisy unless they have better soundproofing.

This property was everything an Ibis hotel should be. The rooms are reasonable priced, clean, and comfortable, though quite small. The lobby was modern and well-appointed. The #1 feature was location! Just a short walk from the Grand Place, I was very impressed with my first visit to Brussels.

Great location, good hotel

from Nottingham_England
We chose this hotel after reading reviews of various hotels in Brussels and were very pleased and thought the previous reviews were accurate. The hotel was very clean, bedroom was immaculate and comfortable. We did not have any problems with noise (perhaps because we were placed at the back of the hotel away from the busy square). It's location was excellent - with everything a walk away. The only downsides to the hotel were that you didn't get tea / coffee facilities in the room and had to pay extra for breakfast (10 euros each)- although the breakfast buffet was very good. I would stay here again.

Great location, clean and friendly.

Great Hotel, location is ideal, one block from the Grand Palace and one block fron Brussels Central Train Station. Dozens of restruants right out side the front door. Very clean hotel and friendly English speaking staff. Lounge is open 24 hours and is both indoor and outdoor. Great pastries and crepes right accross the park. Chocolate shops are everywhere. This is where we will stay on our next trip to Brussels.

Fine hotel - well located

from frankrub
After reading the last review, we wondered if we were in the same hotel. Our room was located on the 4th floor and overlooked the small plaza in front of the hotel. Maybe being that high up reduced any noise level. The plaza was very active until 10 P.M. or so and then quieted down nicely. The hotel is only about a block away from Gare Centraal (train station) and is easily reached by crossing the small courtyard next to the hotel. (Look for the statues of Bela Bartok and Don Quixote in the courtyard.) There is an incline to roll your suitcase down if you do not wish to use the stairs leading from the train station to the courtyard.

Excellent location, but very noisy

from A TripAdvisor Member
You can't beat the location of this hotel, it's a stone's throw from the Grand Place and close to everything.

It's cheap, basic, pretty much as you'd expect an Ibis to be, although the decor looks a bit tired and the wardrobe was tiny. The main drawback (and the reason for the poor rating I've given it) is that it's incredibly noisy. We're not fussy sleepers and God knows we were very tired the night we stayed there and should have slept like logs. However noise insulation at the hotel is non existent, and we were woken up a few times during the night. Before we booked, we'd read the reviews on tripadvisor that mentioned the noise problem, but we'd thought to ourselves: how noisy can it possibly be? The answer is - VERY.

Other than the noise, the room was clean and the toilet/shower facilities satisfactory. Breakfast was good. Nothing exciting, but enough choice to make it worthwhile.

Overall, an OK hotel, but a definite no-no if you're a light sleeper.

Top Local Tips for Brussels

City Bus tour We did a city tour, a realy easy way to get around all the sights. As a day trip have a look at Antwerp its about 45 mins by train from Brussels and well worth a visit.

Eating out Food servings in Brussels are very generous. As a rice eater I was pleasantly surprised to get a heaping bowl of steam rice in all the Asian restaurants I patronized around the hotel. After getting kiddie-size food servings in London and Bern, eating out in Brussels turned to be a real treat. And don't forget to leave some room for chocolates! I put the chocolate shops of Brussels in the same league as the Eiffel Tower - a must-see tourist icon of Europe.

A Good Base Brussels is a great base for visiting other nearby cities such as Bugge, Ghent and Antwerp. The Brussels train system is very good.
