Historical Traveller Reviews of Ibis Brussels Grand'Place Hotel
Decent Hotel, Great Location
from plainjane72Excellent - relaxing and useful hotel
from U.K.MooseVery good
from JMPFFSuperb hotel with excellent value
from RealGiantPandaFirst, location. The hotel was 2 blocks away from the train station and 1 block away from Grand Place, and right next to the Galleria mall. There was no shortage of shops, stores, or restaurants around, including a whole street of seafood places.
Second, the hotel staff were extremely helpful. They even had a service policy of responding to your queries in 15 min. or the stay is free. I wish American hotels would do that - at a Mariott recently I had to call twice to get something.
The room itself is very nice. The decoration is simple but functional. They have a TV with many channels, a very useful closet, and a very nice and clean bathroom. [You have to be careful the bathtub gets somewhat slippery after taking a shower.] A nice feature is this double door - the room door opens to a small hallway. The bathroom door can swing all the way and shut out this hallway from the room at night, so you hear nothing from the inside of the hotel.
We had a problem with the window - couldn't close properly, but they sent someone to fix it immediately. I was also concerned, after reading some reviews, about the mattress being too soft. It seems the hotel has upgraded its mattresses since then, for we found this mattress very firm - the most comfortable mattress we had out of 5 European hotels.
Overall I would stay there again, and I would visit Brussels again - very nice and interesting city.
Noisy Noisy Noisy
from travel_beats_workingApart from the fact that it was expensive for an IBIS (129 Euro) it is situated in a small square near the Grand Place. This square has to be one of the noisiest places on the planet. My wife and I hardly slept all night there was so much noise coming off the square. Between cars honking, drunks shouting, music, delivery trucks, police sirens etc etc I don't think there was a quiet moment all night. My wife is normally a heavy sleeper and never hears anything but this was one hotel that beat her.
In 30+ years of travelling I don't think I ever stayed in a noisier hotel. A few days before this I stayed in the Jolly hotel in Berlin which was next to one of the main train stations and I hardly heard a thing thanks to the soundproofing.
And beware - the Novotel is in the same square so that might be just as noisy unless they have better soundproofing.
Location, Location, Location
from scdarenGreat location, good hotel
from Nottingham_EnglandGreat location, clean and friendly.
from A TripAdvisor MemberFine hotel - well located
from frankrubExcellent location, but very noisy
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt's cheap, basic, pretty much as you'd expect an Ibis to be, although the decor looks a bit tired and the wardrobe was tiny. The main drawback (and the reason for the poor rating I've given it) is that it's incredibly noisy. We're not fussy sleepers and God knows we were very tired the night we stayed there and should have slept like logs. However noise insulation at the hotel is non existent, and we were woken up a few times during the night. Before we booked, we'd read the reviews on tripadvisor that mentioned the noise problem, but we'd thought to ourselves: how noisy can it possibly be? The answer is - VERY.
Other than the noise, the room was clean and the toilet/shower facilities satisfactory. Breakfast was good. Nothing exciting, but enough choice to make it worthwhile.
Overall, an OK hotel, but a definite no-no if you're a light sleeper.
Top Local Tips for Brussels
City Bus tour We did a city tour, a realy easy way to get around all the sights. As a day trip have a look at Antwerp its about 45 mins by train from Brussels and well worth a visit.
Eating out Food servings in Brussels are very generous. As a rice eater I was pleasantly surprised to get a heaping bowl of steam rice in all the Asian restaurants I patronized around the hotel. After getting kiddie-size food servings in London and Bern, eating out in Brussels turned to be a real treat. And don't forget to leave some room for chocolates! I put the chocolate shops of Brussels in the same league as the Eiffel Tower - a must-see tourist icon of Europe.
A Good Base Brussels is a great base for visiting other nearby cities such as Bugge, Ghent and Antwerp. The Brussels train system is very good.
