My wife, stepson and I stayed in two rooms in this hotel on an unseasonably warm weekend in September 2003. It was 29 degrees, and we had two rooms facing directly into the sun, with no air conditioning. It was unbearable. Within an hour of arriving at the hotel, both my wife and I had life-threatening experiences. My wife slipped and injured her leg as she was getting out of the bath, which had a smooth bottom and was very high off the ground--a dangerous combination. We then walked through the nearby botanical gardens to the nearest Metro station, where I was assaulted by a young man who appeared to be of Middle Eastern origin. He was with a girl who was screaming her head off; when I went up and asked him what was going on, he promptly aimed a very professional karate kick directly at my solar plexus. If I had not instinctively blocked the kick with my hand, I could have been killed. As it was, I suffered a broken bone in my hand, which took several weeks to heal. The Belgian police were absolutely uninterested in taking a report of this incident, which I wanted to draw to their attention because I was afraid that my attacker would kill the woman, whom he followed up the escalator after attacking me. I discovered later that this hotel is located in a district of Brussels populated predominantly by people from Arabic-speaking countries, and that it has a high crime rate. We left Brussels early on Sunday, not even bothering to take the city bus tour that we had planned. Altogether an unpleasant experience--I hope never to return to Brussels. Another drawback of this hotel: Although the bar had a menu that included things to eat, when we got back to the hotel there was absolutely no food available. We went to bed hungry.
