Historical Traveller Reviews of Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre
Close to Grand Place
from Bedford RobThe room was clean and well appointed and at about $160 Cdn (about $130 USD) per night is reasonable for Brussels. The location was superb; close to the Grand Place and shopping as well as being on the comic strip walking tour. There were approx 25 channels but only 2 english television channels so I attempted to improve my french comprehension.
Finally, the mini bar was not properly stocked and I called to confirm the contents, fortunately I was not charged for any purchases.
Nice stay, perfect location
from A TripAdvisor MemberI would definitely return to the Bedford..and I don't understand some of the other user's reviews.
Great for a Hen Weekend
from ALJonesBedford needs better beds
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe beds are seemingly made from marshmallow and the room was located next to generating equipment timed to switch on as guests are trying to get some sleep. After a frustrating nights (Sleep!) we went to breakfast to be entertained by the many staff trying to look busy by clattering crockery and cutlery whilst not really having any gainful employment. Surely it doesn't take 10-12 staff to look after so few guests. The food was average poorly presented and the hot buffet was struggling at the lukewarm level. There were no basics like yoghurts or orange juice and the staff were too busy looking busy to serve any one. Guests sitting next to us who were apparently hotel owners themselves were similarly nonplussed with the Bedford. All this from a hotel that could cost as much as 235 euros a night.
We spent the previous night at the Ibis in Antwerp, can't the Bedford follow them for basic standards. We won't be returning to Brussels or the Bedford chain. Upsetting 1 guest who tells another and another etc. Be warned - soon no one will wish to stay at a place pretending to be 4 star which is upstaged by the basic tourist hotels or the simplest of B & Bs.
Very poor.
Great Hotel, short distance to attractions
from A TripAdvisor MemberPleasantly Surprised after reading reviews
from glassesWe sent for the weekend of 26/27 February 2005 and it was bitterly cold. I was pleasantly surprised on the arrival at the hotel, where the reception area was very impressive in comparison to the Road. Our room was on the fourth floor (not sure if that had anything to do with it as a previous reviewer who was fairly happy with their stay was also located on the fourth floor). Room was clean, warm, complimentary shower cap/gel in bathroom. The Bed was my major apprehension, but, again, it was ok, if you like orthopeadic style beds then these beds are not for you, as you do sink into them, I would put it down to the style rather than wear and tear and there were definately no springs sticking out.
Finally breakfast, was fine, although, they made a bad job of the scrambled eggs, drinking chocolate was enjoyed by my son, good selection of cold cuts, cereals, fresh fruit as well as fruit salad and the area where breakfast was served was lovely!
Finally, Finally, the taxi advise was probably very true (expensive) We walked from the station and it took approximately 15 minutes.
cheap for reason
from A TripAdvisor MemberA bit squeezy room and bad view was something we did not expect but all right for that price. The real down side was the bed. The hotel seems to have not made investment on the bed for last three decade. The spring was no working and we woke up next day with real pain in the back.
This is the cheap hotel for reason. Avoid especially for romantic weekend city breaks.
Pleasantly surprised !
from LindaBBrightonHotel is really central and very well placed for enjoying the town. Quite a walk from the Gare du Midi and through an impoverished part of town but interesting to see the other side of life here. Probably too far for the elderly, infirm or lazy !
Breakfast was my only disappointment, not 4 star standard by any means. Overall a pleasant stay especially because of the cheap deal, might have seemed overpriced otherwise.
Tiny rooms
from UKWorkerI chose this hotel as the prices were comparitively cheap for a 4 star hotel. However, when I arrived I realised why. My room was tiny, and the bed was possibly the worst hotel bed I've ever slept in - it was so uncomfortable, it sank down, almost touching the floor when I was in it. What made it worse, was that because the room was so small the bed took up almost the entire room - and the bed itself wasn't even that big! So I was forced to sit/lie down down on the wretched thing....
Additionally the room had no air conditioning - or if it did it wasn't working, so the room was rather warm. Therefore, I had to keep my window open to let some fresh air in, but the problem with this was that there was a road right outside my window (my room was at the front of the hotel), which on Friday and Saturday night could be a little noisy - but it wasn't too bad as the road outside was generally quiet most of the time.
The bathroom facilities were ok, as were the staff and the food at breakfast.
This is definitely not a 4 star hotel - I've stayed in many 3, 4 & 5 star hotels before - so believe me, I know what I'm talking about. The Bedford would just make a 3 star rating if it was lucky!
Another reason I chose this hotel was its location. It is only a few minutes walk from the Grand Place, and a lot of the tourist attractions, etc. From a location point of view the hotel was excellent.
In summary the hotel was ok for the money. Even though the rooms were small & I had a poor bed, the hotels location made up for it. I got what I paid for. Just don't book a stay there expecting a 4 star standard - more like a lowly 3 star hotel in my opinion......
Loved it!
from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Brussels
Train Station Most reviewers say they struggled to locate hotel from Gare Central. I suggest staying on train from airport for another stop to Gare Midi and then getting off. Hotel is 10 min walk in straight line from Gare Midi.
Public Transportation in Brussels I wish I had booked a tour round Brussels instead of trying to figure out the public transport system - we got horribly lost ...
Taxi We got a taxi from the airportto the hotel, due to the fact there was 7 of us and lots of bags, it cost €52 on arrival and €65 on departure, the hotel booked the taxi on departure so i think we would have been better off if we had booked it ourselves but it was worth it per person,it was not too expensive and a lot less hassle that getting to the station.
