About 5 minute's walk from the tourist centre (the Markt), this hotel is on a back street next to a canal, so it was very quiet (I could sleep with the window open and not be disturbed by any noise or traffic - Belgium was going through a rather uncharacteristic heatwave with temperatures reaching 34 degrees while I was there). My room and bathroom were a decent size, well appointed (safe, coffee and tea, minibar, satellite TV, etc.) and very clean. Breakfasts were very good - lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, boil-your-own eggs, etc.) It's about a 20 minute walk from the train station (which is on the south edge of the old town) but there are buses that go very near the hotel, and Bruges is very flat so it's easy walking (just don't wear heels because of the cobblestones). The hotel is also really near a nice outdoor cafe (Cafe Jan Eyck, in the square of the same name, is a great place to sit looking over the canal with a drink in the evening; food's good too).

Park Restaurant If you want a "special" meal - book here! The menu is fantastic and there is a fixed price option which gives a good choice. There is also a wine selection option so that your wine is tailored to your food for you and believe me they really do keep you topped up!

A charming, quiet town Although some people share our enthusiasm for Brugge, not everyone considers it a place to spend more than a day. Yes, I suppose it is a bit touristy, reconstructed and not a "real, living town", as a man from Ghent told me. But it's quiet, charming, and there's a new Kodak Moment at very turn. As an interlude between larger and busier cities, it's a nice place to spend a relaxing couple of days just wandering. There are enough museums to keep one occupied if walking around isn't enough. My husband and I spent 3 1/2 days there in '06 and another 3 1/2 in '07 (with our adult daughters in '07) as R&R time for him after a week-long conference in Amsterdam. We kept intending to get out of town to Ghent or the coast the first visit, but relaxed wandering won out. We did visit Ghent the second time, which we liked a great deal, but never got to the coast. Although we have spent some time in Antwerp and Brussels, we much prefer Brugge.

Museum Deals Do buy the pass for five museums, it costs E15 per person and you can use at five of sixteen listed attractions. We are not great 'culture vultures' but found it very enjoyable visiting a number of the museums. Dont miss the paintings in the Groeninge Museum, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Also the Folklore Museum was worth the walk.
