Great place to stay

from kidmozart
My wife and I stayed here for the first several days of a multi-country trip we took in May 2005. The place was great for the the price you pay. Located in the Ring, it was close to just about everything we wanted to do. If you are planning to stay in your room all day this may not be the place for you, but if you are there to experience Vienna and have a good place to sleep and start the day, I recommend Pension Suzanne. We were literally steps from the Opera House, so close that when we went to see a ballet there and I realized on the steps of the building I forgot my glasses, I had time to run back to the room and get them. The breakfast was great and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

The only thing that surprised me a little was that the lights in the hallway are turned out at night, making it hard to find your way back into your room if you don't have a flashlight. We were a bit surprised by this our first night there, but luckily my wife had a keychain flashlight that we used. Once you know this is the case, it's not a big deal, but was a bit surprising to us at first.

Overall, this is a great place for the budget conscious that want a nice place to stay.

Still great!

My second stay at Suzanne, and every bit as good.
There's a post somewhere in this thread about how shabby the rooms are. As I settled in for my first night I thought, yeah, maybe I COULD look for something smarter next time (although I know the 'shabby chic' is a deliberate style, not just down-at-heel-ness)
*) the room is spotless, both bedroom and bathroom. I dropped something under the bed and had to crawl for it - not a speck of dust anywhere
*) the room is well heated but not over hot
*) the windows are soundproof
*) the breakfast is plentiful and fresh
*) the waitress (she wasn't there on my last trip) was an absolute joy, a real bright spark to start the day
*) all the staff, including the owner, are extremely helpful
*) the chamber-maiding was excellent
*) when the owner passed on the tip I'd left for the chambermaid to her, she curtseyed to me! I felt like royalty!
*) the location is just so fantastic for the price - leave room at 19:00, be in box at the opera by 19:09! 5 minutes brisk walk to the cathedral; 2 minutes to the underground

I've already booked for next year. If you're looking for swish, if you're looking for a bar/restaurant/entertainment, then no, Suzanne is not for you. If you're looking for comfort, location and service, then get in there! - only, don't pinch MY room!!!

Average Hotel

from SFOSteven
Overall, this hotel is an average hotel. PROS: great location (around the corner from the opera house), large rooms, good buffet breakfast, and nice staff. CONS: the room furnishings are run down and need to be updated, and there is a large nightclub down the street which is very noisy on the weekend. This is a decent budget choice, but if you are looking to be pampered you should look elsewhere

Great value!

The location of this hotel is fantastic. It is right by the opera house, a subway exit, and the city ring. We loved Vienna and really enjoyed staying at this pension. There was no AC, and the furnishings were a bit dated, but our room was clean and the staff was very helpful and friendly. Yes, we got two twin beds, but I think that is standard in a lot of European hotels. As an American, I don't really understand it, but after 3 weeks in Europe we were used to it. The breakfast is decent and comes with the price--which, by the way, was just over 100 euros---cheap for Vienna. We would stay here again.

If you get a chance to take a can't miss them, they will approach you when you leave the subway in front of the opera house---do take the danube tour. We took a great boatride down the Danube and then went to a town called Melk. Eat at the restaurant there. Very fast and good.

Location, but ...

I had read a lot of very good reviews of this place, and since normally all I want is a clean, convenient bed and a clean and private place to bathe, I figured it would be fine. And probably for most people who really do not plan on being in the room AT ALL, this would be great. It certainly has location on its side, being right in the Ring near lots of the sites of Vienna. Part of my problem was probably my fault - in asking for a room for 2, I didn't make it clear that we would like to be in the same bed, so I was surprised to find that there were two single beds, placed (for reasons of space) catty corner to each other. Oh well, so much for romantic cuddles after a day among the sites. I guess as long as you know late night snuggles will be impossible, you feel no reason not to load up on pastries and beer (always look on the positive side, right?). I also have to say that the room was slightly on the dumpy/run down side. On a more positive note, the people running the place were friendly, and the breakfast was slightly more than I had expected (sliced meat, a little cheese, cereal, and rolls).

Great location in Vienna

We stayed at Pension Suzanne in May 2005 for 3 nights. The hotel is close to the subway and shopping area and restaurants. We had a street facing room that was not noisy at all. The furnishings in the hotel need an update. The staff is helpful but not over friendly. The breakfast buffet was average. This hotel is in the inner ring of the city and most hotels are expensive here. This is a good budget hotel within reach of all the interesting places in and outside Vienna.

Graet Location

from LisaAndrea
Given that hotels in Vienna are expensive, particularly if you stay within the Ring, the Pension Suzanne is a good value. We stayed in the secondary building across the way and they were in the process of doing some refurbishment so it was a little noisy during "working hours". However, we didn't stay in the room all that often so it proved to be only a minor inconvenience. What was annoying was the older, superintendent woman who glared at us eveyytime we walked passed her. One got the feeling that she didn't appreciate the tourist traffic much. The room was adequate. Nothing special. What you pay for is the location. The Pension is inside the Ring and across the way from the Opera House. There are many sights within a short distance. There is also a massive subway station just around the corner, which is convenient if you plan on exploring the rest of Vienna - I enjoyed the Heurigen (wine taverns) in Grinzing.

Suzanne gets our vote

You want Hotel Sacher quality, go pay hundreds of Euros per night for the same outcome. A warm, clean bed and pleasant surroundings but at a fraction of the cost! Walking distance from the airport CAT terminal at the Hilton. The furnishings and decor are.....quaintly old fashioned. That said, the staff were great, helpful and mulit-lingual. We stayed in one of the apartments across the way (photo on the pension web site) and after reading (only) one very negative review, were a little fearful. It was marvelous! Had everything we needed, clean, quiet, comfy and great at the end of a day walkng the City! You are literally seconds away from all that is important. Bed firm but comfy and not a lump in sight. :) The breakfast was as expected and perfectly suited. Cereals, hams x 2, liver pate, jams, cheese x 3, breads x 3 and croissants, juice and tea or coffee. Don't know what else you could want for the money. Some people just 'aint satisfied I guess. We had no complaints. Bottom line is this..... For the location and money, I defy anyone to find signifcantly better. Go on, give them a go, I have stayed in worse places and unfortunately, all in UK !! Lesson there I think.

No frills but perfect location

from GreenIT
The hotel is definitely of the budget variety. The furnishings especially had seen better days. Lumpy beds, worn carpets and frayed sofa. Kind of like staying at your neglectful uncle's spare room. Not dirty but lived in.

However, and there are a couple of howevers, the staff is friendly and very helpful, breakfast is serviceable and it is right in the heart of Vienna. A half a block away from the opera. If you want an affordable place in Vienna and aren't particulary fussy about the firmness of your mattress, this is your place.

Pension Suzanne - - December 28th - January 3rd, 2005

We found the Pension Suzanne to be in an excellent location; near the main shopping areas, plus only a block from the Opera House. Location could not be better. Close to some great restaurants, and numerous cultural attractions.

The staff was very helpful from checkin to checkout; they helped with dinner reservations, finding out open/closed times for numerous museums. We had no problem paying by credit card, however they wouldn't accept American Express Travelers Checks (in Euros).

The room was clean and spacious, overlooking the street. Bedding couldn't have been better - - feather pillows and feather duvai. The bathroom was clean and well appointed; good water presure.

Breakfast was wonderful. The breakfast room was very nice with matching table linen and china. A great selection of breads, rolls, and assorted spreads. Assorted meats and cheeses, plus dry cereal was provided, and poached eggs upon request.

Would we visit Vienna again? Yes.
Would we stay at the Pension Suzanne again? Definitely yes.

Top Local Tips for Vienna

best Italian food since Italy Eat at enoteca Firenze, a couple blocks away. First time I've had food that tastes like Italy in 10 years outside of Italy.

Using the CAT We used the CAT from the airport to Wien Mitte and it was an excellent choice. Very easy! We also got a discount with our Vienna Card.

Walking We were pleasantly surprised how close we were to all the major sites. Very easy walk.
