Perfect Choice!

Great Location: walking distance to Hofburg, Opera, etc
Friendly, helpful staff
Excellent rooms and baths (large!), comfortable beds/ classical furniture
Many restaurants close by (one next door!)
Free internet service (rooms and also a computer available downstairs)
Easy access to taxis, subway
Safe area at all times
Quiet and elegant

This is a great hotel full of old world charm. The location is excellent - you can walk to everything on the tourist trail (except
Schönbrunn Palace - easy on the train)
The hotel is right of the main shopping street with the Hofburg a 10 minute walk and St. Stephens cathedral less than 5 minutes walk.
Great buffet breakfast and friendly staff, the rooms are big and airy.
On the downside... we requested a non smoking room but the wardrobe stank of smoke and hence so did all our clothes we put in there.
The bathrooms are pretty bad - really old showers and useless hairdryers (the really old hotel style that look like hoovers!) that keep falling of the wall!
All in all the hotel was good the main plus is definetly the location, but if it is modern your after look elsewhere.

We stayed here for 3 nights so that we could visit the Christmas markets. It was in a superb location, 2 mins walk from the nearest tube station and a 10 min walk to the opera house and Das Ring - great for catching trams which arrive within 3 mins of eachother! Getting around is SO easy. The best thing is to buy a 3 day ticket, which can be bought at the airport at baggage claim. This lets you jump on and off trams, trains and tubes. All well signposted and easy to find with the maps that are free everywhere.
A good breakfast started the day and the room had high ceilings and a seating area, plus a big bathroom. Very quiet at night too considering you were in the middle of the City.
Things you must see!!!...Zentralfriedhof by tube then tram..the largest cemetary in europe and the best statuary ever. Plus lots of famous names are buried there. It was like something from an amazing gothic film!! So big it even has its own bus service!
The underground walking tour of hidden Vienna...info via the tourist office. Tours are in english too and you go into the vaults under a church and see the remains of those that died at the time of Mozart...sounds gruesome but it was too incredible to feel creepy.
The Christmas market in the grounds at the entrance to the Schonnbrun palace..via tube. On the cold night it was the best market we discovered in the most amazing setting ever.

Looked extensively for hotel in Vienna. Due to Tripadvisor, we went to Kaiserin Elisabeth.
If you are looking for a hotel that is clean, friendly, well equipped and rooms that are well put together, then please do not look any further!
The Kaiserin Elisabeth is in the best location and within easy walking distance of everything in the inner ring.
Visit L. Heiner for coffee and lunches, 5 minutes away.

Perfect Place in Vienna

I stayed at the Kaiserin Elisabeth Hotel in Vienna in November 2005 for 3 nights. All in all it was a wonderful experience. The hotel could not be better located, only a block away from the Kartner Strasse(the main pedestrian thoroughfare), around the corner from the StephanPlatz(main square)etc. The hotel is immaculately maintained(in a knd of old fashioned way---but that reflects Vienna), and serves an excellent breakfast. Given location, maintenance, breakfast and a helpful staff this hotel is an excellent choice in Vienna---and very reasonably priced to boot.

A Gem in the Heart of Vienna

My initial room assignment was on one of the upper floors and facing the courtyard. When I turned on the air-conditioning, it was noisy and the air was stale. I complained to the hotel desk clerk who told me that because I was from the U.S., they assumed I wanted A/C. I like to keep my windows open, so he put me in a different room.
I spent my first night in a room without air-conditioning and overlooking the street. That turned out to be a disaster for me. It was Friday night and there were drunk revelers outside all night long. I could not sleep with the windows open. It was mid summer and when I shut the windows, it became unbearably hot. At 5 a.m. I gave up and went downstairs to the hotel desk clerk. I told him that I had been up all night. He found another available room for me. This room was palatial with several huge windows that opened onto the courtyard. There was no air-conditioning, but I didn't need it. It was quiet, serene, breezy, and lovely. The third time was definitely the charm! I loved my room!
From this point on, I felt very at home. I stayed at the Kaiserin Elisabeth for four days. The hotel desk clerks were all men and made me feel very safe. You turn your key in before leaving the hotel and there is someone at the desk 24/7 to give you back your key when you return.
This was my first time in Vienna and I soon discovered that the Kaiserin Elisabeth is in the heart of the city. For the fashionistas among you, there is (or was, as of August 2004) a trendy, affordable shoe store, called Humanic, very nearby. I still pine for the white leather motorcycle-style boots I saw there. If only they had them in my European size, 36! There are cafes and restaurants all around the hotel. The subway entrance is practically at your doorstep.
As I was checking out of the hotel, the desk clerks told me that they looked forward to seeing me again and I believed them! I believed that if I came back in a few years that they would still be there.

Geat location, friendly staff

Not the cheapest hotel but full marks for central location, friendly staff and fantastic buffet breakfast. This place has a great atmosphere we were made so comfortable that we didn't want to leave. Great attention to detail without being oppressive or arrogant. Much prefered it to the larger chain hotels which are too impersonal. They recommened a fantastic Beisel called Kern's Beisel on Kleeblattgasse. (close to St Stefans) Great simple but delicious Viennese food in cosy surroundings. Cost 40 EUR for the two of us including wine. So good that we went there twice during our stay. Not the 5* experience of the more commonly known tourist attractions but great value if you want an informal evening out.

Exceeded my expectations!

I stayed at HKE for 3 nights in early July. I had a "small single room" for 75 euros per night including taxes & breakfast (booked directly from their website). Having stayed in Paris before I assumed small meant the size of a shoebox but I was plesantly surprised at the size of the room. In addition, the location of the hotel was absolutely perfect and the staff was incredibly friendly & helpful. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone planning a stay in Vienna. I simply can't say enough good things about this hotel!

Star value and absolute delight

Very pleasantly surprised with this hotel - given the great value for money price of the room at less than 140 Euro for the night I stayed there in late June 2004 (think this was perhaps a special conference rate). Large room, with very high ceilings, which made it seem even more spacious. Free broadband internet. Large bathroom with good-sized tub and powerful shower over the tub. Airconditioned. Not much of a view from my room, but that's not that important when you are so central. Very quiet in spite of central location. A couple of minutes walk from underground station Stephansplatz on line U1. Would highly recommend this place. Front desk staff were also helpful, polite and friendly.

A Great Choice. It was hard to leave

I will second the excellent reviews of the hotel. It has a terrific location --- not only a half block away from Kaertner Strasse which is the main shopping district in the old city, but also a half block away from an entrance to Vienna's excellent and handy to use subway system. Yet, very quiet, and elegant at the same time. The staff are all quite friendly, and very helpful in providing information. I paid 165 Euro's for a very nice double room that had internet access and air conditioning. The hotel also provides wireless access in the salon and a PC with both internet access and a printer for public use free of charge. (This came in handy when I arranged a last minute trip to Prague, and used internet sites for this purpose).

I was a student in Vienna in 1970, and am fluent in German and know the city well. The Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth is a real gem. I was sad to have to leave!

Top Local Tips for Vienna

Concerts, concerts, concerts and food There are no end of music opportunities in Vienna, and you can pretty much find what you like (and purchase tickets beforehand) on the internet. Also, if you're traveling with kids, check out Rosenberger's, a rambling family-style buffet restaurant near the Hotel Sacher

The Ringstrasse Tram Buy a 24 hour public transport ticket and travel around on the tram for a whole circuit using a map in conjuction with it. You can then decide what, where and when you will alight to visit places that interest you. It is very easy.

Try walking down the smaller side streets for good dining experiences! Don't eat in the main squares and tourist areas! Take a time to walk down some of the quieter side streets and you will find some amazing little dining places - especially italian and indian.
