Demel's Cafe for Pastries and Coffee Lots of opinions around on where to get the best pastries in Vienna. Demel's (near the main Hofburg entrance) gets my vote for the best.

Shopping The shops in Vienna close in Vienna apart from the odd chocolate or gift shop, so bear this in mind if only travelling for the weekend. The Xmas markets on the other hand are open 7 days a week.

Wurst Stands Our favorite meals -- and the cheapest, by far -- were the ones spent at Wust (sausage) stands. Order the "Kaiserkrainer", which is sausage with cheese inside of it. Delicious! You can order the sausages sliced on a little cardboard plate with a dollop of mustard (which seems to be the way the Viennese eat them), or in a big roll (kind of like on a hot dog bun). You can get beer as well. We especially liked the stand outside of the Opera house. You won't lose any weight, but it sure is a joy to eat them.
