Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Austria

Wonderful, great welcome, will return

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel was perfect for me. I went to business meeting and was travelling alone and did some sightseeing.
- reasonable price
- great location - near trams and subway stop
- very friendly staff
Historic post office right down street, very near tourist sites. Hunnertwasser house a short tram ride away.
My room had enormously high ceilings - hotel was quiet.

A wonderful value in a great location

from rosemarytraveler
We stayed at the Austria Hotel for 4 nights last week and were very happy with the accomodations. Our room was spotless, comfortable and large enough for a queen bed and a divan. The bathroom was large and included a tub. Breakfasts were served in an elegant dining room complete with crystal chandieliers. There was a good mix of business travelers as well as vacationers. We were give non smoking rooms on one of their two non smoking floors, and our room faced a courtyard which provided for a very quiet night's sleep. The hotel is located in a wonderfull location, just a short walk to all the attractions , and about 15 minutes away from the airport. all in all, a very delightful choice for the money.

Would Go Back Any Time

I reserved at the Austria for two nights in March with a rate of 65 Euros per night for a single, which made the experience both a pleasant stay and a memorable value. In a major European capital, I can't imagine getting more for less.
The address on Fleischmarkt just puts you in the neighborhood. The hotel's actually stuck back in an alley well off the street. Unlike another reviewer, I didn't notice any noise problems. The location is good for St. Stephen's, the stores on Kantnerstrasse and the theater district, better for restaurants and the "Bermuda Triangle" nightclubs. The Schwedenplatz U-bahn is a block away.
Here's the good part: big, clean rooms, excellent (free) breakfast and helpful, multi-lingual staff. My only real problem was getting comfortable on the bed. The pillows were ultra-crushable and the only bedcover was a heavy duvet, which was really too warm.
At the right price, I'd recommend it to anyone except someone needing to be right in the middle of the old city/tourist area.

Excellent value hotel

We had a lovely weekend in Vienna staying at the Hotel Austria. The Hotel is within 100 metres of the underground and tram stop and 50 metres from the start of a long and interesting shopping street. Plenty of nearby restaurants. Easy 20 minute stroll to museums,Parliament building and old town.
Hotel is small but clean and comfortable, excellent value for money and staff very friendly.Bedrooms were spotless as was bathroom and room serviced daily including towel change.

Excellent continental breakfast with good choice of meat, cheeses and breads. Fresh fruit and choice of cereals.

Free internet in reception area along with printer. Wi fi also available in addition to wired internet.

We will return to Vienna and most ceratinly the Hotel Austria.

PS. Vienna card is great value if you intend using public transport,it includes discount into many city attractions.

Wonderful hotel

from FatFroggy
We spent a wonderful long weekend in Hotel Austria.
The hotel is really centrally located, just a short walk from lots of places on interest, near the metro and underground and some great restaurants.
It's quite a small hotel which made it feel really cosy and personal. We found the staff very helpful who advised us on where to go and how to get there.
The hotel is furnished in a very traditional fashion, lots of gold and burgandy furnishings which made it feel quite decadent, which we loved but may not be to everyone's taste. The bathrooms are quite dated, but clean and perfectly functional. Breakfasts are great, lots to choose from and a really relaxed atmosphere with helpful and attentive staff.
We really loved the hotel and Vienna is absolutely amazing - I would highly recommend Hotel Austria, it is a little gem.

Graet Hotel!

from HongKongFace
This is a great hotel, right in the heart of central Vienna. We have spent the past three New Years here and we have always been very happy with our stay. The staff are always very friendly and helpful.

Rooms are more than adequate without being luxurious. Bathrooms are clean, modern and bright, and the beds are comfortable. The buffet breakfasts are more than adequate.

One thing which I would caution though is the noise in the early hours. If your room looks onto the alley / street, the racket is pretty bad – with deliveries of (I don't know – what? milk? bread? laundry?) in the wee small hours making for a rude awakening. So, the moral of the story is: ask for an inside room.

If you don’t like smoking in public and coming back home stinking of other people’s fag smoke then avoid Vienna. NEVER have we been anywhere where so many people smoke so much. So make sure you ask for a room on one of the two non-smoking floors.

Other than this, absolutely no problems recommending this fantastic hotel.

Not the Ritz....but good value for money!

from GMSCalgary
This hotel was good value for money in a capital city. The location was fairly central for visiting tourist locations and handy for the metro. We found the room to be quiet and adequate. The hotel was clean and we had no problems with the hotel reception, that had mentioned in some reviews on this hotel.

The only disappointing feature was that the breakfasts were uninspiring!

Great location!

from mauikeiki65
The greatest thing about this hotel was the location. A quiet side street off of the Fleichmarkt, one block from the metro stop and a few more to St. Stephen's cathedral.
The service was efficient and friendly-ish.
The room was a good size but the furniture could use some updating.
Breakfast was good too accept for a discruntled woman who enjoyed slamming dished on to her collection tray...

Quiet, On the Edge of the Historic District

from rodndtube
In Vienna we chose not to stay near or next to the train station but instead opted for a historic location at a decent price in Vienna. We made the right choice! The hotel was easy to reach to/from the train station via subway (some additional directions are included below and a map is attached). The room price included a solid breakfast buffet and access to a safe deposit box. We requested an upper floor room which had plenty of space and was quiet.

The hotel is on the border of the historic district but perfectly situated for walks to shops, cafes, restaurants or transport (the underground and trolley line is about 3 blocks away; buses are also included with the Vienna Card). The shopping district takes you right to historic palaces, museums and cathedrals. St. Stephens is about 3 blocks away.

Exit the U1 at Schwedenplatz. Walk to the east along the river to the corner where there are several cafe stands/shops and turn right walking away from the river. Walk up this street until it deadends and turn right and then take the next left, a dead end street. The hotel is located at the end of the street.

Great for families

from A TripAdvisor Member
I searched a long time for a hotel in Vienna and I picked this one because of location and price. It was excellent. We had two rooms, one for our 2 college age sons. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. The hotel atmosphere was charming and characteristic. The breakfast was great and the location was terrific. All of the staff were extremely helpful. Even though the location is off of the main street, the noise was very loud early in the morning with the windows open. An inside room would have been quiet. But we would still go back again. We all really enjoyed it. They had the softest and nicest towels I've ever had in a hotel!

Top Local Tips for Vienna

Bermuda Brau Bermuda Brau is a fun place for Dinner. Good Viennese food (with spare ribs thrown in). A lot of locals meet here. Dancing downstairs.

Underground trains The underground (U Bahn) is modern, clean, safe and easy to use

Vienna Card Get one. If only for the ease of not faffing about buying tickets for tram, bus, rail etc, you also get reductions or gifts at loads of museums, shops etc. Unlimited travel for various periods of time which starts when you validate it on your first trip on public transport. Do not be tempted to cheat - Austrians obey their rules and fines are hefty.
