Top Local Tips for Vienna

Night time tourist Try to see the Town Hall and some of the other buildings at night, they are beautifully lit up. Also, if you're interested in the Natural History Museum, they do special night time tours in either English or German.

Haus der Musik (House of Music) This was a great day out for anyone the least bit interested in music. As well as attending a (virtual) concert of the Vienna Philharmonic you can conduct them! You choose from a number of tunes including the Blue Danube and the Radetsky March as well as others. If you don't get it right the orchestra start to complain among themselves and then get up and complain to the conductor! It has a dice game where you can create your own waltz and take it away on CD if you want to (at extra cost). There is a lot of interactive stuff which kids of all ages can spend a lot of time on, as well as more serious stuff about some classical composers and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Be warned you can spend all day there. We were there over 5 hours!

Great Food in Vienna! There are lots and lots of great places to eat in Vienna and a lot of great food! In addition to many restaurants, there are also several shopping malls with a wide selection and variety of foods. Our biggest problem was that we didn't have enough time to try all the wonderful places we came across! In addition, there are many cafes and coffeehouses that serve great coffees and mouth-watering pastries. Some of these offer traditional Austrian pastries including the famous Sacher Torte. We visited one of these coffeehouses which is apparently over 100 years old and it was wonderful! We also stopped one morning at an Illy cafe on the Mariahilferstrasse which specializes in great coffees. We had coffee here and a croissant filled with orange marmalade. I don't usually care for marmalade, but this croissant was to die for! Fresh, warm and the marmalade was heavenly! Don't miss this if you like croissants!
