Historical Traveller Reviews of Altstadt Vienna Hotel

Fantastic place in a good location

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in a four person suite and it was fantastic. The furnishings were ultra modern, and the suite was incredibly spacious. I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you're looking for a typical old world, European-charm place, because it is basically an artistic, concept hotel. However, if that doesn't matter to you, I highly recommend this hotel. The beds were ultra comfortable, the sheets were stark white, and the room was very clean. We received little chocolates on our pillows, and even the bathroom floor was heated. The bathroom, by the way, was sparkling clean.

The staff was incredibly helpful, and even offered us umbrellas when it rained. The location is great, within walking distance to a major shopping district.

But the BEST part of this hotel was the breakfast. Absolutely fantastic. Not your typical eggs and ham, but little rolls, cheeses, meats, and fruit. Very euro-chic. The breakfast alone made our stay that much better.

The only part that may be a problem is air conditioning. They turn it off at night and thus it's available only between 6am and 11pm (or something like that). But the weather is not too hot in Vienna, so that may not be an issue.

Recommend this place highly.
Management Response from Altstadt
The Management of the "Altstadt Vienna" would like to post a statement referring to the posting of a "Trip Advisor"-Member on July 7, 2005.
The hotel "Altstadt" does have air-conditioned rooms. There are some rooms, where the AC has to be turned off during the night because of noise-reduction. We feel sorry about that.
However, every guest, who requests AC in the room will be offered an air-conditioned room.
Dear "Trip Advisor"-Member, thank you for your rating. Kindest regards from your personal residence in Vienna, the "Altstadt"-Team

Alstadt not our favorite

from lucyluIssaquah
We have just returned from a 3 week trip in Eastern Europe and stayed at the Alstadt for 3 nights. The hotel is clean and the personnel at the front desk were wonderfully helpful. We loved the warm towels in the bathroom and the breakfasts were very good with lots of choices.

However, we were expecting a hotel that reflected the ambiance of Vienna. The Alstadt is in a typical Viennese building, but it shares the building with apartment owners and so it has rooms on various floors all of which share the hallways with the apartment owners so it is very impersonal. The furnishings and artwork are ultra modern and we had expected something more typical of the city. We had the garden suite and it was very small and overlooked a garden that hadn't been tended in at least a year and was full of weeds and some old furniture. It was not what we had expected. If you are looking for "cozy and old world charm" this is not the hotel for you. But it is a good value for the money and it is well located. We would look at other places before we went back to the Alstadt.

Absolutely Fantastic!!!!

We stayed at this hotel for four nights in June after visiting Budapest and Prague. Of all the hotels I have ever stayed in, 'Alstadt' is by far the best.
We stayed in 'Helgas Room' which overlooked a church.
The rooms have the original wooden floors with large original windows.
All rooms are individually styled but are all modern and comfortable. Rooms are cleaned daily and chocolates are put on the pillows each day.
Breakfast is served until 10:30am and is a delicious selection of meats, cheeses, breads and cakes. The service is excellent and the lounge area plays classical music which creates a wonderful relaxing atmosphere.
The staff are fantastic and are always there to recommend restaurants or make bookings.
The location is also good, and it is only a short walk to the museum quarter and the shops. We also discovered a fantastic Indian restaurant about a five min walk from the hotel.
Staying in this hotel made for an extremely enjoyable stay in Vienna.

If you stay in Vienna, stay in style

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel Altstadt in Vienna is the exact opposite of bland. It is stylish, refreshing, full of the most delightful little surprises. Yet it makes absolutely no compromises in the quality of its service, or its attention to every last detail of personal attention and comfort.
Each room is individually furnished to achieve just the right blend of modern and period styles.
The salon features massive windows onto the baroque and "biedermeier" architecture of the area, an open fireplace, a striking colour scheme, and a pleasingly arranged display of paintings and prints.
The salon also serves as the location for a delicious breakfast that offers, in addition to the usual items, a good selection of the many delicious cake and bread varieties that are typical for Vienna.
Another great bonus is the location, which puts you within easy walking distance of the brand new museum district as well as the many sights located in the city centre.
My wife and I stayed here for six nights and felt suberbly looked after. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Vienna.

more than perfect

from A TripAdvisor Member
the Altsadt hotel has to be one of the very best places i have ever stayed in. everything is perfect: from the location, in the most elegant district of vienna, to to wonderful rooms, to the truly original and inspiring art hanging not just in the public areas but in the rooms as well, to the excellent tea and coffee at breakfast...

the Altstadt has all the comforts you would expect from a 5 stars hotel, but with lovely, attentive and warm service, all the stylishness of a designer hotel, but without the stuffiness or pretension of most of them. and all of this at a very reasonable price.

Staying at the Altstadt is like staying in your dream home.

Excellent Altstadt.

Just got back from the Altstadt Hotel in Vienna, after a 5 day trip. Very impressed by the hotel, whcih I had chosen after reading the good reviews on this site. Nice quiet location, near the museums and the best, non-touristy restaurants. They have extraordinarily helpful staff in the reception and breakfast areas. They will book restaurants according to your preference. We ate out on 4 different nights at four different recommendations and each one was excellent. The hotel breakfast buffet was very comprehensive with lots of space; nice and refined and relaxed. I have stayed at other, more expensive, 5 star hotels in Vienna and they were not so good. Rooms large, beds very comfortable, soundproofing excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. I am hard to impress but I was on this occasion. Thanks other reviewers for a really good tip!

Lovely hotel in a lovely area

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in this hotel from 9-12 February. We booked it based on the good reviews it got on Tripadvisor. We absolutely loved the atmosphere of the hotel. Very arty and very homely. The rooms are large with nice wooden floors. We didn't see the flatscreen tv that was 'advertised' on altstadt's website, it was a normal portable but that was the least of our worries. The staff are very friendly and helpfull, but at the same time not in your face. They appear when you need them, but leave you be when you want to relax. The lounge room is really lovely when you come back in the evening for a glass of wine by the fire. We weren't sure would we mind the hotel being small and not having a bar, but that was absolutely no problem. The lounge room definitely made up for this. Clasical music or lounge music is playing most of the time, adding to the relaxed atmosphere.
The area that the hotel is in is very cosy with small restaurants, bars and next door to neuburggasse with it's unusual shops.
Overall, we would certainly recommend this hotel for anybody who likes to stay in a small, stylish and classy hotel with very good standards and with very attentive staff. If you are looking for a large hotel with restaurant, pool etc then this would not be a good choice.

Great Service at the Altstadt

from kkeating
The Altstadt Vienna is a beautiful European hotel, and it proved to be a great base for our exploration of Vienna. It's located in the charming Spittelburg area and is close to the Volkstheater metro station. It's also right at the edge of the museum area of the city, so most sites are within easy walking distance. The hotel itself was wonderful. We arrived late in the evening, but fortunately the hotel's reception is open 24 hours. The friendly receptionist gave us a room upgrade to a three-room suite, which was perfect. The hotel rooms are a little sparsely furnished, but otherwise, they are an excellent value for Vienna. And the included continental breakfast buffet gave us a great start to each morning. Overall, the Altstadt was a wonderful hotel at a good price.

You had me at Altstadt Vienna!

Vienna really won both me and my wife over just by this Hotel. The staff had to be the most professional and sweetest in all of Europe. We arrived about six hours early for our reservation and the staff insisted that we relax in the dining room and help ourselves to breakfast while they rushed our room to be ready.

We stayed in the 'Owners Suite' which was a beautiful, large, hard wood floor apartment. Very comfortable bed and nothing looked cheap from the high end bathtub and shower to the bathroom. You almost felt like Beethoven himself in such an elegant hotel.

The hotel is also located a few blocks from the Museum district and this is where my wife and spent a good eight hours exploring as many museum exhibits as we could.

At night we checked out this very dark, hipster asian bar/club called Ra'mien --- Very cool atmosphere with live DJ downstairs. We happened to be in town on Sunday night and they were the only place open that had life to it.

A really nice place to stay

from almcd
My wife and I have just spent two weeks in Vienna at the Hotel Altstadt and it is all that everyone says it is. From the outside, you would hardly know that it was there, but on the inside, it was warm, quaint and very friendly. Our room on the fifth floor was 25 feet by 25 feet, with 10 foot high ceilings, 2 feet thick walls and double doors. Easily the quietest room I have ever slept in. The reception ladies speak fluent English and are very good at their job.
The breakfast was first class. It is a ten minute walk to the Museum Quarter, 7 minutes to the subway and within 5 minutes, you have many excellent and reasonable(by Vienna standards) restaurants. I highly recommend it.

Top Local Tips for Vienna

The Market Go to the market (I;ve forgotten its name) and have lunch in the fish restaurant

MARIONETTE THEATER at the SCHLOSS SCHÖNBRUNN Palace Delightful for adults and children! A very unique experience.

Museums Unless you are really fun of Modern art, don't go to MUMOK. The collection is really poor when we compare with Queen Sofia at Madrid or Modern Tate in London. Use the time (and money) going to other Museums… some are actually offensive in my opinion…to see “bondage” and sado-masochist photos and films in a museum is not my concept of art!
