Top Local Tips for St. Gilgen

GO TO HALLEIN Go to the Railway Station and get a special ticket, for the train, bus, saltmine tour, celtic museum, and celt village at hallein, they also have family deals, very reasonable priced, and the trip takes half an hour . once in Hallein, get a no 42 bus up to the saltmine, or if its summer see if the chairlift is working,the bus is included within the special ticket, walk towards the saltmine, theres a good little shop there , and a nice little cafe, not over expensive, proberly cheaper than any in Salzburg, the tour is mostly walking, with train in and out, and a lake trip on the salt lake, the staff are very good, and the lady is great with the children, once finished go up to the celtic village ,just outside the saltmine, and also go up the steep hill to the local church, very nice in side, then catch the bus back into the village and drop off by the celt museum, after this go to the church and see where the christmas carol, SILENT NIGHT was composed, and the museum, by the church,

In and around Salzburg Salzburg is a great place to stop for 4 or more days and if you are inter railing and you need a break from the long haul ICE trains then come and stay in Salzburg. Munich is not far away so if you cant find any places to stay in Munich for the Oktoberfest, then stay here as the trains to Munich are frequent and quick (and direct). You have the salt mines, the Ice Caves of Werfen, Berchtesgaden to see the Eagles Nest taken by the 101st airbourne and kept intact to be used as a resturant today. Go on the sound of music tour or go and see the birth place of Mozart in the old town of Salzburg itself. Other attractions in the city include The Catacombs, the fortress, the many beer gardens, one of which the beer is brewed by on site monks. There is much more to do as well as walking etc.
