Historical Traveller Reviews of Wolf Dietrich Residenz Hotel

Our family of 4 (parents in 30s with a 17 year old & a 2.5 year old) stayed at this hotel for 3 days. Two of the days were booked thru an online reservation service (highly recommended). We were placed in Room 54 which is a large room (as large as an American standard suite) that shares a "living" room with Room 55. While the family room has its own TV, VCR & DVD player, the living room has it's own TV with a couple of sofas and plenty of toys and puzzles that kept our toddler occupied. And if you got tired of watching "The Sound of Music" continuously on the hotel's TV station, they even had DVDs and videos (in English, German, French, etc) that were available to borrow for free!! Spontaneously as we arrived at the hotel on the first day, we decided to stay a 3rd day. Although the rate was higher than the rate that we found on the internet, we were happy to stay at this hotel. Since our room was already rented out for that third day, we had to stay in the annex across the street in room 401. Unfortunately (in our out-of-shape state) there wasn't an elevator to take us up to the 4th floor, but the hotel personnel was wonderful and brought all of our heavy bags to the room. The room was a two story suite with a wonderful birds eye views of Salzburg. It was lovely! The hotel personnel were great. They helped with all of our tour reservations. They had wonderful restaurant suggestions. And I won't forget to mention that they have free internet access in the lobby!
My wife and I had a lovely weekend in Salzburg in February. Fantastic scenery and beautiful city. We booked the Magic Flute Romantic Suite in this hotel. It was surprising to say the least - not what we would call exactly romantic as it was not really in good taste but the hilarity of it did not detract from a great weekend. It was a bit overpriced but good fun.
Very Good Hotel for the price
I stayed February 2005 with my wife... 1st time visit to Salzburg, so I took a gamble that my guide book was right and sure enough I got what I wanted... a great hotel - small enough to care about it's guests but big enough to offer pool, sauna, great breakfast, room service, good sized room, clean and great staff. I read the other comments... sure the hotel is split in two, but you could walk it in five seconds, as for the location... we fould it ideal, you can walk to the old centre in 10 minutes and the castle in 20 minutes... with such a beutiful city this was a pleasure - in fact if we hadn't been located at this hotel we would have missed the relaxing riverbanks and great bars. The room was better than most UK hotels, even had enough room for sofa, breakfast table and chairs - plus a great view (I don't think all rooms have a similar view). Tip... don't miss the castle, the views from the very top are spectacular, also SOHO (Bar & Good Food and a chef who talks to his customers), which is a little walk from the hotel, proved to be a great fun night out.
you get what you pay for
We stayed at the Wolf dietrich Hotel for 3 nights in October in a very nice room across the road. No lift but our bags were carried up for us and we carried them down on departure. We booked through Hotels and knew that breakfast wasn't included in the room rate We were happy to pay extra for a very hearty breakfast. The room was large and very clean and most importantly quiet. The hotel is very well situated for walking around Salzburg. I had also looked at the NH Hotel when deciding where to stay and on seeing that hotel was pleased that I chose the Wolf Dietrich as it was smaller, quiet and not full of busloads of tourists. We felt that we got value for money and had no complaints. The staff were very helpful and courteous. If you are looking for a hotel with a lift, air conditioning, lots of tourists in a noisy position maybe a five star hotel would suit you better than this charming hotel.
Better places to stay

I booked a room via their web site and paid a hefty price. Later, a friend got a room via hotels.com for $75 less than I was paying. I was put up across the street. Completely inconvenient. I had 2 bags and a carry-on. There is no elevator in that building and the stairs are slippery, narrow at some corners and not carpeted. If you don't have a bellperson to carry your bags, you better expect to schlep all of your luggage up a dangerous staircase. It was much worse in the morning because they also did not remember my wake-up call and I did not have time to wait for a bellperson--if there was one working at 5am. Made 2 trips up and down 4 floors to get all of my luggage down stairs, ran across the street--leaving my bags on the other side of the street hoping no one was around at 5am to steal it while I checked out in the other building. Also, since there is no carpet and the hallways are short, there was so much noise with people coming in and out of the building and going up and down the stairs and hallways. The location is far from the area you want to be in. The rest of my family was at the Goldener (great location) and I had to take cabs after shopping and dinner with them. After seeing their rooms and the hotel Goldener Hirsch--that is a much better place to stay!!
Mixed feelings over the Wolf-Dietrich
My wife and I have just spent four days at the Wolf Dietrich in Salzburg and, although we enjoyed our time there, it was not quite our style. It may have been the organic breakfasts; it may have been the very floral decoration throughout. The hotel was very clean and ideally situated for a Salzburg visit and the receptionists were very helpful. The rooms are mid-sized and the attached bathroom that we had was very modern and very functional. It has a dining room and a small indoor pool, neither of which we used. We paid 131 Euros per night and by Austrian standards, that is pretty good. I would give it 7.5 out of 10.
There are probably better hotels in Salzburg for the price. Spent 3 nights there in Sept. The location is quiet, but a little out of the way--which is not bad considering everything in Salzburg is easy to walk to. The room was spacious, but garrish and strangley decorated. The front desk staff were helpful, though the rang a different room for our wake up call the morning we were to leave. Luckily I can wake up on my own otherwise we would have missed our flight. The hotel had the feeling of a place that was once better but is in a state of decline. Like I said there are hopefully better hotels for the money.
Bring your Own Food and Air Conditioning
We didn't stay in the main hotel, but in an annex across the street. Room spacious with comfortable furniture, but rather hot in mid-August. Location somewhat out of the way. Breakfast not included in the room rate. Best feature was the courtesy of the staff, who helped us arrange castle and ice caves tour. Would return to this place, but only in more temperate weather.

We just wish to point out that most of our clients choose our hotel especially because of it's quiet location which is in a small pedestrian street close to Mirabell Palace. To Mirabell gardens it is only a 5 minute walk and to the sights in the old city, eg Mozart's House and the cathedral, it is a 10 minute walk. Naturally there are other hotels directly in the old city but then you may find that it is rather noisey, especially in the summer months when you want to have the windows open.
For those clients booking directly with the hotel, the rates always include breakfast. Only those booking through Hotels and Expedia have rates excluding breakfast.
We apologize for not having air-conditioning but the rooms in the Residenz are spacious, as mentioned, with high ceilings and in the summer months we always provide fans in the rooms. To be honest, in Salzburg the number of days in the year when we need air-conditioning are very few.

This is the first place I've felt taken advantage of when booking on-line. Even though I'd made reservations well in advance with our requests, we ended up with no view, no a/c, 4th floor no elevator and no breakfast - and we had paid more than the rack rate. So we paid still MORE and were "upgraded" but this hotel didn't offer the basic amenities we've enjoyed throughout Europe, like nice linens, toiletries, ice bucket, in-room safe. And someone unlocked the door while we were in the room and stepped in - saying "oops". We felt less than secure. Plus we thought the decor in our suite was garish and odd. There are lots of hotels in this area - don't pick this one.

We regret that these clients were not happy with our establishment however we wish to point out that the booking was made over the internet via Hotel and so the only information received was date, name, room category but no special requests concerning view etc. When a hotel is in the city center it is difficult to meet the clients wishes concerning view!
The rooms which are offered in the Hotels.com system are in the Wolf-Dietrich Residenz which is our second house, just opposite from the main building. As mentioned there is no elevator in the Residenz but for this reason the rooms are cheaper than those in the main building.
For those clients booking directly with the hotel, breakfast is included in the room rate however the bookings from Hotels are without breakfast. We shall be contacting them to make sure that this point is made more clear on the booking form.
The clients in question stayed with us in August, during the festival season, when the hotel was completely full and therefore we were unable to offer an alternative double room in the main building. We did however offer, at a small additional cost (less than the actual price difference), a suite in the main building which was the only alternative. Our suites are new but they are theme rooms and have been created by a stage designer from the opera. Some clients find our suites wonderful, others however find them "odd" as in this case - it is a matter of taste!
To avoid the room maid entering the room unexpected, it would be advisable to put out the "Do not disturb" sign or at least leave the key in the door so that she cannot open it from the outside - as in every hotel.
Furthermore we wish to assure future clients that we do our utmost to make them feel at home here at the Wolf-Dietrich and do try to fulfill any special requests they may have.
good choice for families
Our family of 5 stayed for 4 nights in July in their family suite. This was a nice, spacious room. The breakfast buffet was lovely (go early for the best selection). There was even a tiny swimming pool. The staff was great. Best of all was the location. Easy walk into the old town and places to eat and snack.
Top Local Tips for Salzburg
If you can take a day trip around the nearby villages, they are very cute
You cannot eat evening meal in the Wolf Dietrich - the fox around the corner is rustic & very good as is th wasserfall - both on Linzer Gasse
Buy this as soon as you arrive if you are visiting all the local attractions
