Genuine Austrian welcome

from SandyTraveler
This is truely a wonderful experience to stay in this lovely old hotel. If you don't like antiques, you won't like it but if you want to stay somewhere that feels like it has a sense of place, this is it.

The service is excellent and personal, the rooms are luxurious without being fussy, and the decor is marvelous. I didn't eat in the hotel but hear that it is excellent. It's in a great location in the midst of old Salzburg, in the heart of shopping, dining and tourism. It's a peaceful island in a busy world in which to stay, business or pleasure.

Very Nice

The Golderner Hirsch is a nice hotel with a wonderful location.

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

If you drive, the hotel will park your car for 28 euros per night.

One thing to be aware of at the hotel...they don't tell you that the breakfast buffet is 25 euros per person!!!! My wife and I decided to have a quick breakfast one morning...just a small amount of scrambled eggs and two pieces of sausage, then we were off to the salt mines. 50euros for breakfast on my check-out bill!!!!!!!

Other than that we were pleased with the hotel room and staff.

Excellent location but really old

from World Passport
This hotel is more like a bigger version of bed and breakfast type of lodging. If you are used to modern hotel, this is not the hotel for you. We had a huge room with a huge bathroom, looks exactly like the one on the website of Starwood (Luxury Collection) virtual tour. Going to our room is very confusing. In my book this is not a luxury hotel at all. It is more like a 3 star hotel. Very old and even though the bathroom has a bidet, bathrobe, and slippers, this is not comparable to any other Luxury hotel collection. I have a feeling that Sheraton Salzburg would be better, but for location, you cannot beat this one. Try the Radisson Altstadt which looks bigger and nicer and it is only less than a 5 minute walk from this hotel. We will stay there next time we come back to Salzburg.

wonderful hotel wonderful staff wonderful location

from adamsmorgan
The best location in Salzburg. Extremely helpful staff, very friendly and charming. Wonderful room (we were in festival wing across the street). A great hotel experience at a very good price.

Wonderful hotel and great staff. Food pricey.

from BigBlueOcean70
The staff was dressed in traditional Austrian wear. They were very helpful. The bathroom was spacious with a tub.

The room was very comfortable with down beds and luxurious linens. We used our Starwood Points for our stay and we were upgraded to a big room with a sitting area.

The food in the restaurant was very good but the buffet breakfast pricey at 25 Euro per person.

We would stay there again.

snooty staff,mediocre hotel at best.

We just returned from one of many vacations in Europe.Stayed in the Grand Bretagne in Athens, the Grand Europe hotel in st petersburg, the national in Moscow and both the Bristol and Imperial hotels in Vienna.Apart from the fact that the Grand bretagne added 166 dollars in charges to our room incorrectly which we are still disputing, all of these hotels were magnificent in decor, service and attitude apart from the Goldener Hirsch.Despite the fact it is a starwood property like the Bristol and Imperial there is no comparison.Although we had a suite ( a wierd two story rustic dated piece of junk) we were sorely dissapointed. There is no parking available. The hotel will park your car but dont inform you they charge 40 dollars a day to do so.The staff were snooty and unhelpful. The looks I recieved for wearing shorts to stroll around town were unaccaptable. The Imperial and Bristol both in Vienna had a right to be snooty as the hotels were posh and brilliant yet they were gracious and not snooty at all.
This hotel is very poor indeed for the prices they charge. If you are staying in salzburg stay at the radisson in the old town.Just as good and half the price.
Salzburg in general is raved about. Why I dont know.Spend more time in Vienna which truly is one of the great cities of the world and extremely underated.I live in san diego and have noticed that destinations that are highly promoted to americans like myself are usually not very good.Santorini in Greece and salzburg in Austria are perfect examples of destinations with good marketing campaignes but little substance.Salzburg is a poor imitation of a much nicer Heidelberg in Germany.Santorini is a tourist Disneyland for people who dont know the real greek Island experience is much nicer on Crete.
The Goldener Hirsch is one of the worst hotels we have stayed at in 15 years of travel and stays at over 100 of the worlds leading hotels.
Alert ------Give this one a miss and dont listen to reviewers here who obviously have not stayed at the better hotels the world has to offer.

What a wonderful stay

from ThWilmesi
We stayed End of June 3 nights at the Goldener Hirsch. The hotel has just over 50 rooms and is very intimate in a prime location of Salzburg ( Getreidegasse). The house in which the hotel is located is about 500 years old.

We stayed in a one bedroom-suite thanks to an upgrade due to my Platinum Preferred Status by Starwood. The Suite was very nice and spacious and furnished very traditionally with antiques. Bathroom was of very good size. What makes this hotel real special are its people, service is wonderful. They gave us welcome amenity a nice bottle of red wine ( austrian) and every night you had two bottles of sparkling mineral water complimentary with the turndown service.

Their restaurant is one of the best in Salzburg and serves traditional austrian cuisine (Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz) in a high-end setting with excellent service. Don't forget to try the " Salzburger Nockerl" which is the signature dessert in Salzburg, it is similar to a Souffle, only better, a dream of air, sugar and egg......

Overall a fantastic stay and I can only recommend the hotel

Christmas at Goldener Hirsch

from TravelingFamily
Our family of 4 (two teenagers) stayed at Goldener Hirsch from Christmas Eve until December 28. We stayed in the Festival Wing across the street from the main hotel. We had two rooms separated by a private hallway....perfect for a family. I was worried the rooms would be cramped - they were huge! Lovely hotel. Christmas Eve dinner was great - but pricey. The hotel recommended a restaurant in Anif - great traditional Austrian meal. Our favorite place was the Augustiner Brauerei - fun night out.

lovelly hotel and perfect location

from TheMcs
We stayed for 2 nights 13th and 14th December. The hotel offered excellent service and was full of old world character. We opted for a festival room which was very spacious. We found the service was excellent and the staff very efficient. My only comment would be perhaps the bar areas lacked atmosphere, but with a central location it was easy to find plent of restaurants and bars.

Loved it!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Loved this hotel--it was so cute and the location was perfect right on the main shopping street. The rooms are done in a rustic decor and with great amenities. Bathrooms are beautiful. I can't see why anyone wouldn't love it. Look forward to getting back there!!

Top Local Tips for Salzburg

St. Peter Stifskeller Make sure to go to the restaurant St. Peter Stifskeller. Absolutely beautiful, dating back to the 800's. Their Mozart concert dinner is divine.

Hohensalzburg A trip on the funicular to the fortress (Festung) is an absolute must. We were privileged to see one of the most beautiful cities in Europe spread out below us, covered in a blanket of snow. Mozart's home town was just as I had always imagined it.

Salzburg Opera is a Must See Even if you don't like opera, a visit to the amazingly ornate opera house is a must. Snag a seat on the ground floor and marvel at the craftsmanship all around you.
