We found the location of the hotel a problem - we could have booked much closer to the sights of Salzburg.

The room was small and not all that well kept especially for the price but the biggest letdown was the chilly service.

The website has a lot of wonderful pictures, but that did not correspond at all with the dumpy joint we found on arrival.

Fantastic Hotel Auersperg

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were at the auersperg for my wifes birthday in early December.
The hotel was superb.

The staff were extremely efficient and on returning to England and Staying in the Marriot in Coventry it made us realise how poor the service generally is in England.

The rooms were spotlessly clean, linen was changed each day and the bathrooms were lovely.

The Hotel is cosy and in a great location only a ten minute walk to town but out of the hussle and bussle.

A couple of must do's Drinks at the Hotel Stein roof terrace bar outside with blankets and patio heaters and fantastic views of Salzburg and the mountain.

Also we had dinner at the Pffershief restaurant one night. It is a taxi ride out of town eye wateringly expensive but is michellin starred and the food was fantastic.

A three course dinner for two with 2 bottles of red wine and brandys was £ 200.00.

Book before you go to Salzburg because they are fully booked weeks in advance.

Cheers

An Extra Touch - in the mail

from A TripAdvisor Member
Rooms across Europe are generally small, hotel staff can vary and on any given day, you can get a surly reception or be treated like royalty. We stayed at this hotel and have very positive things to say about the staff (very helpful, patient, etc), the food and the ambience. The rooms were above average although a bit stuffy. When asked to complete a survey about the hotel at the end of our stay, we were honest; we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the hotel. About two weeks after we returned, we received a CD (a classical music mix) in the mail thanking us for our positive comments and for our time to complete the survey. While the reviewer who recently had the bad experience at the hotel is entitled to his opinion, I liked that the Hotel Management responded. Once again, this showed that they CARE about our opinions, which puts them in a superior class of PEOPLE (i.e. it was clearly not just the money from a one-time guest, but it is also that these are managers who seem to actually care about their reputations). Bravo.

Nice Hotel, Accomodating Staff

from sdn123
I don't understand some of the negative reviews of this hotel. It is not a five star, but is a very nice hotel with some nice extras. We stayed in the main hotel building on the second floor. The room was not huge, but was nicely decorated and the bathroon was recently updated. The staff went out of their way to help us with questions, store our luggage, and offer helpful hints for the city. It is a little walk from the main sights in town, but a stoll of less than a mile. The two things that stood out to me is that every floor has a huge bowl of apples for the guests and there was a computer near the lobby with free internet. These are extras that were not expected, but made our stay easier and more enjoyable.

Will Not Return? Must have the wrong hotel..

from Nidgehammer
I simply cannot believe that the review below is for the wonderful Auersperg Hotel. We have just returned from a two night stay for our anniversary with friends who celebrate theirs on the same day and we had a great experience there.

The quality of the breakfasts has already been mentioned and I fully concur with those, good selection and available from 7am-11am every day of the week.

The hotel has a very relaxed feel about it, from the soothing piped music to the quietly courteous and helpful staff at reception. Then of course there's the sauna and steamroom on the top floor (although as a repressed Englishman, I didn't quite have the courage to strip naked as is the Austrian way!) - the area also has lounging chairs and a cd player for more chillout effect.

The bar area is very pleasant and open until until 1am, which is really quite late enough in such a sleepy but beautiful city (YOU try finding a restaurant to serve you after 10pm..!). The young lady working in the bar went to great lengths to recommend bars and restaurants and all of her suggestions were good. We found that the locals are rightly very proud of their city and want you to enjoy it as much as possible.

The Auersperg is not located in what would be considered the centre of the town but it's a very enjoyable 10-15 minute stroll to the south side of the river and only adds to the peacefullness of the location.

If I had one small grouch it would be that the bathroom we had was too small but that really is a minor point and hardly worthy of mention.

We're going back there, try and stop us..

Wonderful hospitality in a wonderful city

If you are looking for a hotel that has staff who are attentive to their guests (including remembering to pass on birthday greetings!), then the Hotel Auersperg is the place to stay. They remembered who we were by name during our 3-night stay and were very helpful with restaurant recommendations/reservations and travel information. The hot breakfasts were great and the rooms were very clean. We were pleasantly surprised and will definitely be back again!

Comfortable and Stylish

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Villa Auersperg in Salzburg, Austria for 5 nights at the end of August. We can be on the fussy side and were a little worried about this hotel before checking in because some of the other hotels in the city were VERY expensive and we were worried that because this was actually reasonably priced, it might be sub-par. That was not the case at all - while the hotel wasn't lavish, it was kept up very nicely, was clean and very stylishly and tastefully decorated. We had a corner room in the Villa on the second to the top floor and it was pretty big with nice high ceilings and a gleaming hardwood floor.

The breakfasts were VERY yummy and quick. We also had a fast lunch on the terrace one day which was delightful, and we had a couple of drinks in the hotel bar (the bartender made my husband a very good Manhattan and my wine was very tasty - we were pleasantly surprised and lingered there longer than we thought we would).

The people at the front desk were fluent in English and very helpful, and they acted as the jack of all trades. They acted as receptionist, front-desk clerk and concierge, and they had very good restaurant and sightseeing recommendations - overall VERY helpful. There is also internet access & a printer provided free of charge - sometimes there was a wait but people were generally pretty courteous if you were waiting.

By the way, this place is NOT in the true heart of the old city - it's probably a 10 minute walk which as long as you know that in advance, it will suit you just fine. It was actually a nice walk along streets with some window shopping as well as some nice cafes. An added plus is that if you have a car, it is NOT a pedestrian-only zone right where the hotel is located, so you can easily drive right in and the parking is free...no hassles. We drove to the ice caves, the salt mines, Eagles Nest and Konigsee - all very nice places to visit which we would recommend.

All in all, this place really was a pleasant surprise for us. We would stay here again if we came back to Salzburg.

Absolutely fabulous!

I've just come back from a business trip to Europe and I cannot praise this hotel enough. It was such a joy to experience a hotel at that level of excellence. Our room was absolutely beautiful, very tastefully decorated, with a modern, spacious bathroom and all amenities you could wish for (unfortunately it wasn't over-looking the garden though). The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and breakfast was top of the range! For most of my time away I stayed at 5-star chain hotels and even though the rooms are generally what you'd expect, it was such a nice change to spend a few days at a smaller, privately owned hotel that makes you feel welcomed, comfortable and special. It's the attention to the details that makes the difference. We will definitely be back!

So friendly

from danwillis
My wife and I have just spent 9 nights at the Auersperg, visiting the Salzberg Festival for our 54th anniversary. I simply can't speak too highly of it. Our room was large, comfortable and spotless and all the amenities were excellent. The location is fine, and although the fairly short walk to the centre was too much for my 82 year-old wife, a taxi was always at the door in a couple of minutes.

However, what makes the hotel really exceptional is the staff. I can honestly say that in all our years of travelling we have never met such friendliness, cheerfulness and a genuine willingness to be as helpful as possible. Nothing was too much trouble. All of them - receptionists, breakfast staff, bar staff - were marvellous. We certainly hope to return.

A tip: ask for a room overlooking the garden if possible.

Average plus

We were a little disappointed in this hotel. We stayed in the Annex, which although the room itself was comfortable and clean, the building felt like a dorm. It was also farther from the center of things than we would have liked. On the other hand, the breakfast was wonderful (although not cheap) and we really enjoyed the atmosphere at the bar.

Auersperg was terrific

from NinaKPaloAlto_CA
We stayed in the Auersperg in June, 2004 and loved it.
We (seniors) found it an easy walk to the old town as well as to the Mozartium. We were given a junior suite and enjoyed its space and ammenities. The solarium on the top floor is inviting and the little garden is charming. Breakfast is generous and tasty and served in a newly decorated light and bright room. The reception staff was charming and very helpful. There are little goodies like fresh fruit and several English newspapers and magazines daily - Free parking. We highly recommend it.

Top Local Tips for Salzburg

cheap gifts We popped in to a little grocery store call SPAR. I picked up little bottles of schnapps/brandy shaped like violins for 3 euros each...I saw them for much more elsewhere. We also picked up Mozartballs for less here as well. Market was at Linzergasse 57. Lots of neat things to grab and go...including batteries!

Use the trains! Use the trains in Austria. The country is covered with an extensive network of trains that run ON TIME. All major centres connected with several services each day. They are clean and fairly priced by UK standards.
