Ideally situated for travelers

The hotel is ideally situated for travelers arriving and/or leaving Salzburg by train since it is a short walk from the main train station. The staff was very warm, friendly, and helpful. The staff members all seemed to be fluent in English which is helpful for those of us who are challenged in speaking German. The restaurant which is not owned by the hotel was excellent and the restaurant's staff was as friendly as the hotel's staff. Our room was very large (it was actually a two-room suite)and the bed was quite comfortable. The room is very typically German and not for those Americans looking for ultra-modern style. Unfortunately the rooms are not air-conditioned.
We actually reserved a room for two different dates, but when we arrived for the first date, our room was unavailable since the person occupying our room the day before had become ill and was unable to leave. But the Bayrischer Hof staff called a nearby hotel to ensure that we would have a room for the night. The hotel they found for us was very typically American. We were much happier staying at the Bayrischer Hof during our second stay.
The only negative aspects of staying at the Bayrischer Hof are two: First, it is is some distance from the Old Town and unless one is an avid walker (as both my husband and I are), a taxi into town would be required. And secondly, the neighborhood may not be an area for evening strolling as are most neighborhoods surrounding train stations. In spite of these two negatives, I would not hesitate to stay there again in the future.

Use the public buses The public transport buses are superb - clean, quick and regular. Single journey was 1-80 Euros when we were there in June 2007.

Sound of music tour Take the tour it is lovely to see the "Hills"

SOUND OF MUSIC TOUR A MUST! We did the Panoramic Sound of Music Tour and loved it. It was a bit cheezy at times, but that's what made it fun. I'm a big fan of the movie, my husband probably never watched the whole thing, but we were both singing along by the end. You get to see many great sites in and outside of Salzburg. It was fabulous!
