Almost 100% great

This hotel is lovely, right in the center of the old city center. Everything is just a walk away, including the wonderful outdoor market, and the Billa. The room my husband and I had was quite large. The only problem we had was being awoken occasionally bty rather loud revelers walking through the downtown late at night, and one morning at 5:00 am, being woken up by truck deliveries being made to the stores. Other than that, it was as convenient as you could possibly get, and very well-appointed. We also loved the big Golden Retriever of one of the managers there. It was like having a piece of home to see in the mornings as he lazed in the TV room.

Fabulous little hotel in great location

We spent eight wonderful days in this hotel. We were welcomed warmly at reception as 'the Australians'. We had booked on the web and all our bookings went smoothly. We had a large room on the fourth floor with a window to the front and one at the back. We often would open the front window and look out at the street and watch the passers-by. The double hung windows ensured no street noise when they were closed. Our room came complete with a chandelier. The corridors were filled with antiques. The courteous staff in the breakfast room always ensured the linen tablecloths were clean and attended to our every wish. The receptionists were very helpful, getting us tickets for concerts and choosing the best trains for us when we visited Innsbruck and Linz for the day. The hotel staff made us very welcome and the ambience of this hotel contributed greatly to our memorable Salzburg experience.

Perfect in so many ways.

We were a party of two couples and have just returned from a wonderful trip to Salzburg .
The Elephant Hotel was excellent. Perfect location, wonderful friendly , helpful staff and beautiful food. Straight away we felt at home in the Elephant. The hotel is tastefully decorated and a nice touch was an umbrella in the room just in case!
Breakfasts were excellent with a wide variety of good food. When we return to Salzbug we will stay at The Elephant! Wundervoll!

A wonderful hotel

this is a wonderful family-run hotel. A 700 year old building with two fine restaurants. My room was a single, small, but with up to date bathroom facilities. It faced a wall, because I requested the quietest room. It was air-conditioned and non-smoking. There is a computer with internet connection for guest use. The only downside to my room was the absence of a bureau. It is located right in the heart of Old Salzburg, which is mainly pedestrian and bicycles. I had the greatest time wandering around and on the last day of my stay I took two minibus tours up in the hills.
The breakfast is unbelievable: there are two rooms, with quiet classical music, and linens, crystal and fine table settings. A wonderful choice of foods, with quiet and attentive waitstaff. It is the best I have ever experienced in a reasonably priced hotel.
The staff is extremely helpful.

Fantastic hotel in great location

Just finishing a two night stay at the hotel elefant in salzburg and loved it. The hotel is brilliantly located in the old town just off the main street (getreidstrasse) and is incredibly central for all the attractions. Most other people i spoke to on tours etc were in hotels in the new town, which is nowhere near as nice in my opinion. The old town area is pedestrian only cobblestone streets and closer to most of the attractions.
The hotel itself is beautiful and the rooms are lovely. My single room was adequate in size with a comfortable bed. The bathroom was superb - power shower and brand new bathroom. The free breakfasts were lovely and if you have a laptop you get the first day of internet (ethernet cable in room) free and then it is approx 5-6 euro per day after that which is fairly reasonable. There is a computer on the first floor for those without laptops.
Only complaint would be that my room was made up despite the do not disturb sign being put up.
Strongly recommend both the Sound of Music tour (i did panorama tours and it was fine but it was a packed big bus) and dinner and Mozart concert at the fortress. The hotel booked both for me.
A taxi from the airport to the hotel is E12 so that is the easiest way to get here.

Great location and comfort

We stayed 5 nights during a heat wave in June and really appreciated being able to take a mid-day rest in our airconditioned room. The old city is all with 5 minutes walk. Decor and service impeccable. The breakfast was first-rate. We appreciated our spacious, cool and quiet room at the back (the lack of view was no problem for us). This room also has the advantage of toilet separate from large bathroom with bath and shower. Also had an excellent meal in the restaurant (same prices as other restaurants in the old town).

Loved the Hotel Elefant

My husband and I along with our 12 yo son stayed at Hotel Elefant for three nights in early June of 2006. We were very pleased with all aspects of the hotel.

We arrived by car which was a bit of a challenge since the hotel is technically in the pedestrian center of the city. You are allowed to drive to the hotel to unload your luggage. We actually parked the car in an open square just above the hotel as we werent sure we were going the right way on the street. I walked to the hotel lobby and the staff person at the desk came right out, hiked up the street, grabbed our bags and brought them back to the hotel. They took our keys and parked the car for us as well. They were great and we had great service from the hotel staff at all times.

Parking is off site in the public garages about a 5 or 10 minute walk from the hotel. They offer to fetch the car for you as well.

We had a room that would accomodate three people. It was more like a suite with a sitting area that had a comfortable pull out bed for our son. The room was very spacious, clean, and comfortable. Our room consisted of a walk in area with a closet, the sitting area that had another closet, the pull out couch, and TV. That led to the main bedroom which was of good size. Bed was very comfortable. We had another sort of dressing room and walk in closet off the bedroom and the bath was off of that as well. The bath had a modern shower and was spotless. No tub but we prefer showers only.

The hotel has a elevator and air conditioning but we did not need the ac. Its an old house with wide open halls and a marble staircase. The common areas are decorated with antiques and old pictures. The breakfast buffet was more than generous with the typical fresh fruits, rolls, meats, and even scrambled eggs and bacon.

The location is absolutely perfect as well. We ate dinner at the restaurant one night and it was quite good. Hotel guests are given a free cocktail as well. With the windows open, you can hear the noise from the street. However, with the windows closed, its very peaceful. The bells of certain churches do ring throughout the night but that would be true for any hotel you stay in in the Aldstadt.

I also would highly recommend staying in the Aldstadt area rather than across the river. It is simply not as charming on that side of the river, busier, traffic laden, etc.

Unless you are looking for a sterile, posh , 5 star luxury hotel, I can highly recommend this hotel and would stay there again. We loved it.

The Excellent Elefant

it wasn't until after I had booked the Hotel Elefant that I read the mixed reviews - so was already anxious when I arrived with my 81 year old father for ashort break. It wa such a relief to find that the hotel was immaculate, very comfortable and in a perfect location - smack bang in the middle of the old town so easy to return to for a rest in the middle of the day. Despite this it was very quiet and peaceful with no traffic, nightclub or other noise pollution to be disturbed by. The staff couldn't have been more charming or helpful. When I needed advice about where to eat (Salzburg is not a good place for vegetarians and vegans!) they pointed me in the right direction as well as providing a box of first aid supplies when I needed plasters for an injured foot. A request for firmer pillows was responded to immediately - nothing was too much trouble. And access - and complimentary use of the computer in the lounge was another added bonus. One of the few hotels in the city to include breakfast in the room rate was another feature that attracted me and proved worthwhile as it was worth having. Fresh fruit in the receptionare was another indication of the care given to guests needs. The single room was compact but very pleasant - and furnished to a high standard - great bathroom facilities too. On arrival my father was upgraded to a very pleasant double room which was considerate of the staff. And lastly... the restaurant attached to the hotel proved a boon as the maitre d' spoke impeccable English and was happy to adapt the menu to provide very fresh vegetarian fayre at very reasonable prices. Salzburg itself was fantastic - not a drop of rain fell while we were there - and the Sound of Music Tour should not be missed!

OK, but nothing special

Besides the good location, the hotel is OK, but certainly not exciting. It is in an old house, but does not display historical charme. I stayed in one of the largest rooms, but it was just spacious enough (even for European standards), while (judging from the floorplan) other rooms are incredibly small (obviously single rooms). The small bathroom had only a shower, but was bright modern und tastefully decorated (marble tiles on the walls). Furniture and decoration is good, but again, not exciting. In every respect, this hotel is average, however I give an additional point for its excellent location (right in the heart of the Altstadt).

We booked through Best Western for 6 nights, December 22-28. The hotel is in a very good location, the staff are friendly and helpful and the restaurant serves good food. We were, however, very disappointed with our tiny standard room (shower no bath) and immediately decided to upgrade to a superior room, which was much better. (One small niggle - the towels are miniscule and very thin.) Salzburg did look beautiful in the snow, but we quickly gained the impression that the city was closing down for 48 hours over Christmas. We decided to move to Vienna on Christmas Eve. The Elefant charged us a one night 'cancellation fee' of 178 euros, but booking so late at the Romischer Kaiser in Vienna we had a fantastic deal (536 euros for 4 nights) and apart from the rail fare it didn't cost any more. The Romischer Kaiser is a beautiful hotel and we were upgraded to a suite on arrival 'our Christmas gift to you'(this has never happened to us before and was a real treat.)

To conclude, Salzburg was beautiful but dead at Christmas. Vienna, as always (our fourth Christmas), was wonderful.

Top Local Tips for Salzburg

Sound of Music Tour very overated with a tour guide that drives you crazy after the first five minutes! unless you are a hardened fan I feel that one of the other tours would have been far more enjoyable.

Mozart Dinner concert Well recommended at 45 euros at the Stiftskeller St. Peter restaurant. Great traditional surroundings with live chamber orchestra and opera singing. Book in advance on-line. Collect tickets earlier in the day when you arrive.

Panoroma Sound of Music trip is definatly recommendable from Panoroma tours. However their "Bavarian mountains - Berechtesgaden - Saltmines" was not upto our expectations.
