Top Local Tips for Panama City
F.Y.I. When riding in a cab around town they don't have meters and if you ask them how much the fare will be prior to the trip everytime they will say $5. But if you don't ask and just get in the cab and when it comes time to pay give them $3 and they never say a word. I think the locals pay $2 for anything in town.
Don't take taxi at hotel - they are a rip off Avoid taking the taxis in front of the hotel, save yourself $20 and walk a few steps away where there are loads of taxis just driving by, stop any of them. As a local panamanian, I knew the rates (most fares are $1.75 for up to about 3 miles, and no more than 4.75 for as far as 7 miles). I was shocked to hear a taxi driver quote me $20 for what was a $2.75 fare! I walked about 25 steps and got a taxi, and the driver charged me $2.75 for the same exact trip the hotel taxi wanted $20 for!
Rent a car and head to San Carlos and Santa Clara.... Great half day/full day getaway and very affordable.
