Paradise Improvedfrom maitri
Reef House is located in one of the last traditional water-front villages on Roatan, and is only accessible by boat. On your way, you'll pass through the village of Oak Ridge, a vibrant fishing community of friendly locals, whose homes are built on stilts over the water. Located on the east end & southern side of Roatan, Reef House is constantly washed in cooling trade winds (which conveniently blow the sand flies to the western & more built-up end of the island), and has one of the best diving walls in the Caribbean 100 feet from the water-front bar. Certainly one of the highlights of staying at Reef House is the tidal salt water pool, which hosts anywhere from 15-20 hawksbill and green turtles, which are part of an on-going study to discover their habits & range. You can snorkle with the turtles, and the host of other sea life residing in the pool (including conch, barracuda, blennys, octopus, & lots of juvenile fish) any time you desire.
The resort is rustic and comfortable, with clean rooms & private bathrooms, A/C, ceiling fans, & a shady verandah perfect for reading a book on a hot afternoon. The food is incredibly good & plentiful, with lots of fresh local fruit, seafood, barbequed chicken, ribs & steak. If you have special dietary needs, the kitchen is happy to oblige. My friend & I cannot eat gluten, and we brought a few mixes for things like gluten-free bread, pancakes, and cake, and the kitchen staff made these special for us, and took care to ensure that our special needs were met.
The diving is incredible! We did 16 dives, and each one was special. A partial list of what we saw includes: a host of soft corals & sponges, hard corals & plentiful sea life on perhaps the most pristine reef in the Caribbean, adult & juvenile Spotted Drum, Sea Horses, large schoold of Atlantic Spadefish, Moray Eel, Spotted Eel, Rays, many species of Angelfish, Parrotfish, Filefish, Grouper, Jack, Snapper, Coronetfish, and so many Gobi's and Blenny's, shrimp & crabs that you could spend an hour at one coral head. Our favorite dives included Mary's Place, Calvin's Crack, Plato Tipico, Sponge Garden & Fiddler's Bight. Our Dive Master (Davit) & Instructor (David S) were wonderful to dive with, spending time to point out special requests like seahorses, spotted drum, or unusual corals.
If you want night-life, crowds & noise, then stay down at the West End of Roatan. But, if you want to experience life in a traditional Roatan village, in a clean & comfortable resort, surrounded by natural beauty, friendly staff & guests who share your passion for diving and snorkeling & the beauty of the reef, then Reef House Resort is for you. They offer an incredible experience with hosts who truly care about the island of Roatan, their guests, and the reef. Reef House is one of those small & comfortable places you keep hoping to find. Which is why we're returning next February for our third visit!

The two older kids, 12 and 14, and my husband went on at least three to four dives per day. Small groups of 10 to 12 people. Different spots every dive. The reef is gorgeous and lots of different things to see. My son and husband thought the shark dive was incredible!
The Reef House has no beach but that is not needed.
They have a large enclosed tidal pool that contained 20 plus endangered Hawk's Bill and Green turtles
that you could swim with anytime you wanted! My eight year old loved it since he couldn't scuba dive. You can snorkel right off the dock! The reef is a short swim away with a lot to see!
The Reef House is a beautiful rustic getaway for people who don't like large crowds, love to dive, and want a secluded peaceful holiday.
The rooms are neat and clean. A friendly and attentive staff. Your three meals served daily are good and varied. Larry and Carol have owned the place for a year now and are making a lot of improvements.
It was a good match for us! We had a wonderful time and would go back! Muchas gracias Reef House!

Reef House, Cindy and Matt, felt like we were at home.from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I can,t say enough about our stay at the reef house. The owners made you feel at home, and went to all stops to make our trip fun and comfortable.
My wife's camera flooded on our first dive, and larry, one of the owners found the same camera on ebay, and had it shipped with some later arriving guests.
Can't say enough about the warm welcome, and stay.
Oh yeah did I mention that is the most untouched, and gorgeous reef you'll ever encounter. Walk out on the dock and jump in, the drop off is only 50 feet away, great snorkeling too.
For you die hard divers, like my wife and I, the owners will let you dive as much as you want off their dock (free air). We racked up 20+ dives in five days.
We swam with wild dolphins, and saw many reef sharks, (highly recommend the shark dive), ask larry.
Reef House is a must go for divers and snorklers.

Due to a wet winter season the viz was not what we expected in Roatan, (we've been there before),but the reef is still the best with huge brain and barrel coral, tons of the soft fan and fern stuff and fish aplenty. Dive Master David - All diving on Roatan is wall diving!- and Captain Choco - Check! Check! No air no lunch! -were both helpful and fun.
The food was excellent, and thanks to the breeze there are far fewer bugs on this side of the island.
We'd go back in a heartbeat. . .

Within very short order we had been given our rooms, had eaten the first of MANY fabulous meals that we ejoyed throughout our stay, and were bustling down to jump onto one of the 2 dive boats. After entering the water I was stunned by the health and beauty of the reef below me. The "no glove" policy at The Reef House Resort is a good one if they can continue to preserve the reef in this condition. The owners of this resort are Canadian and though this is not an upscale facility, it makes your stay more of a trip to the family cottage rather than your typical institutional vacation. You are made to feel "at home"...I like to tell my freinds..."It was like going to summer camp...except the food was good AND....it had a bar ;-)". Would I go to the Reef House Resort again? In a heartbeat! I thuroughly enjoyed the family and their facility.
In fact, I was so moved by my experiences in Roatan, I'm considering moving there in the next year or so to work as an instructor.

Seahorses, huge moray eels, squid that love to have stare-down contests, and so much more. It was truely magical under the sea. Mary's Place, 40 ft Point, Calvin's Crack... That's only the beginning. If I named all the different dive spots you'd be spending too much time reading this reivew and not get on with booking your trip. I couldn't even pick a favorite if I tried.
But let me tell you, as much as I am addicted to getting as much bottom time as possible, there is nothing I looked forward to more in my day than to spend time with the people at Reef House. Larry bends over backwards to accommodate (as they all do) every wish and his integrity is rare. He cares for the people and environment of Roatan, seeing it his responsibility to positively contribute to the betterment of his new community. His wife, Carol, ensures that everything moves along in the kitchen and provides her guests with a calm comforting environment with her ease and graciousness. Her gentleness and sweetness makes you feel like you're hanging with your sister but don't let that fool you. She's one heck of a poker player! Then there are Barry, their son-in-law, who is the backbone, a really hard worker and a wonderful dad and husband and Ashley (Carol and Larry's daughter) who always serves with a smile and a kind word. Watching Barry, Ashley and their new baby Liam (who is the cutest, smilest, calmest baby ever) adds to the family feeling. AND if you get to be at the resort when Justin (Larry and Carol's son) visits from LA, well you will just be extra lucky! I can't say enough about this family.
Of course with this wonderful family running the Reef House, you can be assured that the staff is also there to make sure that your trip is extra special. The dive staff makes your trip enjoyable and safe. David is the Pied piper of Roatan. He weaves wonderful stories of the island. Ask him to tell you about his mother and Christopher Columbus. :-) The boat captains, Choco and David, are so sweet and accommodating. Ever determined that you have everything you need. No Air No Lunch, baby! or is it... No Air No Life?
The food is great. I'm a bit of a foodie and always worry that the food won't be up to par when I travel. Especially since I eat like a little piggie after diving. But I was treated every day to delicious meals that definately filled my belly and tempted my tastebuds.
Our evenings were filed with beautiful sunsets, friendly card games, margaritas and swapping stories. Of course if you'd rather walk down the pier and look for octopus creeping along the bottom of the reef just steps from the deck or sit and watch the stars, you can do that too.
I loved every moment of it. I'm already planning my next visit. Hope to see you there!

Top Local Tips for Roatan
Fly direct! If you can take a direct flight to Roatan, do so. Man that TACA flight through San Pedro Sula is awful.
It's far from civilization Basically Honduras is a 3rd world country and Roatan is beyond rustic. This is an economically challanged area where even the simple things are difficult to come by.
Clothing tips Bring lots of clothes. Nothing dries! Also only casual clothes should be brought.
