Crossing the Border from Guatemala It takes about 4 and a half hours to drive from Guatemala City. The rental car company says you have to buy special insurance and take out a letter from a Guatemalan attorney. We tried this but we were unable to get to the border before it closed at 6 pm. We tried later in our trip with a different car with no insurance or special letter from an attorney and had no trouble crossing the border mid day. We were just waived across. Although we looked obviously American, they did not even check the passports. All the worry about the rental car was for naught.

McCaw Mountain Bird Park Be sure to take this trip in addition to Copan Ruins. It is a bird park inside a coffee plantation. The story of the park is interesting. You'll be glad you went.
