Hotels in Antigua commonly overstate their quality and services. It's criticle you do research ahead of time on your Guatemala hotel selections. We found the hotels commonly misrepresent everything from quality to internet availability. We need to be able to stay in contact with the states and must have internet certain days of the week. Some of the hotels said they had internet but often it wasn't available or they just didn't have it. Be careful who you receive both hotel and restaurant recommendations from while in Guatemala because fees or kick-backs are demanded from the hotels by the tour operators, restaurant owners, and just about any other person sending business. It's a bizarre under-world we found out about after being sent to a very dangerous and filthy hotel.

Good time to go Except for the daytime heat (which we're accustomed to, as we're from So. TX), late Dec. proved to be a good time to go. There's no A/C at this hotel, but the surrounding views of volcanoes and the history of the area are very interesting.

Volcano Hiking the active volcano was worth the trip for the great views. The hike is very strenuous, but "taxis" (horses) are available at a reasonable cost to get you most of the way up the climb. The last hour of the climb is on foot and can be hard to make if you are not in the best shape.
