The trip is very simple now that you don't need to drive back to Guatemala City from Antigua to get there. Take a good road map, picnic lunch, leave early in the morning and you'll have a great trip. If you want to go at night, though, then do it as a tour because you don't want to drive around the countryside at night.

Have a map Try to have a map before you arrive to Antigua, especially if you are driving. There are not signs to guide traffic when entering Antigua or for exiting. Also, many streets are not labeled, so a map is very handy.
