The roads really ARE bad The roads are driveable, but it takes time, time, time, to get from place to place. Things that look close on the map aren't - a 30-mile trip can be a day-long adventure. Pay close attention to hotels that describe themselves as being at the end of a 3-mile private unpaved road: this can mean a 20-minute drive at the start (and end) of any day-trip, or evening at a nearby town. Also, travelling on bad roads all the time is tiring. Pick hotels that are CLOSE to what you want to see.
Get a GPS You need a GPS to find this place. There are no street signs and wew were very glad to have a 4x4 and GPS.
Bring your Dramamine The roads in rural Costa Rica are rough and unpaved. There are many hills and the tourismo drivers are great, but if you get car sick even the slightest bit, pack some Dramamine and take it an hour before. It's better to be safe than sorry.
