We used Hotel Le Bergerac as our home base during our travels around Costa Rica. They will happily store luggage for you, if needed. My family and I stayed in room 9, it offers 2 queen beds, a walk-in closet, a private safe, cable TV, telephone, a huge spotless bathroom w/double sinks, a lovely private garden patio overlooking the nearby mountains, ceiling fans, double patio doors, wood floor and an excellent staff always willing to help. The French restaurant downstairs is a little stuffy (long pants required) but the food is pretty good, and they offer room service if desired. I can't say enough nice things about this hotel. They were always helpful, courteous and friendly.

Top Local Tips for San Jose

Things to remember. Remember that San Jose is a large city. It has everything good about a large city and everything bad. As a tourist don't go where you don't belong, just as you wouldn't go many places at certain times of the day or night in the city where you live. You can have a lot of fun in and around San Jose.

Don't rent a car in San Jose There are no street signs showing what street you are on and the city is not laid out in a grid. Add in crazy drivers and narrow roads, makes renting a car in San Jose an extremely bad idea. If you are staying close to the airport in the suburbs, and you don't want to go to the east side of the city or country, you can probably get away with renting a car. If you are staying downtown or on the East side of the city, forget about it. The highway from the airport ends on the western outskirts of the city and there is no direct way to get downtown or to the other side of San Jose or the country without winding your way through about 9 or 10 different streets that don't have names and abrubtly dead end after two or three blocks. We met one person who rented a car and spent hours trying to locate their hotel. Desperate, they asked a policeman, who was nice enought to give them a police escort to their hotel.
