Top Local Tips for San Jose

Departure tax / airport taxi You could always go up one floor to get a normal taxi rather than an airport taxi to San Jose as it can be cheaper. Otherwise, the bus to downtown is only 350 colones (70 cents).In addition, you can buy your departure tax a day or two before you leave at hotels or banks and then take the recepit to check-in on the day. If not, once you get to the airport, go LEFT at the entrance for the departure tax desk there; the one on the RIGHT is ALWAYS crowded. Also, no one cares if you have liquids in your bag if you're going anywhere other than Canada or the US.

Shopping - Take bubble wrap & tape You will NOT find packing materials for your treasures. IF you happen to find something to buy that's NOT a balsa wood parrot... you'll find that the best you'll get is they'll wrap it in some paper ( a VERY small amount) and then a layer of saran wrap. If you leave it like this, you'll likely arrive home & open your luggage to find a pile of clay chips or glass pieces, etc inside your package... after the airlines are done tossing your bags around the little wrapping just doesn't stand much of a chance. So, before you go, hit the 99cent store or something and grab yourself some bubblewrap and tape. It weighs nothing and you'll be forever thrilled you have it. There's (a street vendor) w/ a blanket on the ground in front of the national museum. He sells ukarinas for $5. they are clay figurines of people & animals about 7-10" tall and about 6" wide. if you look close they have little holes. They're whistles. They're $10-20 elsewhere in the country at tourist traps! Bubblewrap!

Shopping in San Jose Well, this is a major city and shopping is plentiful here. The Pedestrian Mall just a couple blocks away has both food and shopping and is a decent place to go (traffic here can be scary for someone on foot who is used to cars stopping for them as they walk across the street, so be careful!). I liked the city but the pollution coming out of the cars, trucks and buses can make you sick. Also, not many people we ran into spoke English, so be forewarned! There is much to see and do here, but you may need a car or know how to navigate the bus system really well to get around. Go see the museums, gardens and other big attractions. It's worth it to spend a day here tolling around.
