We stayed at Tico Adventure Lodge in Samara and absolutely loved it. I would recommend paying the extra money to get a room with A/C (we did one just with a fan and it got hot at night). Our room and bathroom was very clean and spacious. The "safe" that they provide in the room is actually just a metal box with a padlock on it, but I felt pretty safe leaving our valuables in there. The grounds at the lodge are beautiful and the pool is very nice. It's about 4 blocks from the beach, so easily within walking distance. The desk staff were helpful when we had questions. We did the kayak tour through the surf school but would not recommend it - there's not much to see once you get to the island. Samara Beach was gorgeous and the small town had everything you needed - internet cafes, grocery stores, good restaurants. Would definitely recommend Tico Adventure Lodge.

Surf instructors only showed up when they felt like it and then would disappear during lesson so they could surf themselves.

Airconditioner went out and I was told "oh well" and then he tried to charge us for an airconditioned room, when we said no he tried to haggle (actually he tried to haggle via an employee because he wouldn't even talk to us face to face). Told us he would come out and take pics of us surfing....never did. Then told us WE told him the wrong reservations dates and didn't have a room the last night. Said it was MY e-mail that had dates.....when in actuality (unfortunately I realized after we left) that it wasn't my e-mail it was HIS. He had gotten dates wrong. Horrible Horrible experience.

Chris and his wife are wonderful people who moved to Costa Rica a few years ago to live their dream. An Amazingly comfortable place with a cold pool, which comes in handy during hot Samara days. Great staff, and good surf instructors! I miss them already!

Beautiful hotel steps away from town and the ocean. Clean, comfortable rooms at a reasonable price. Friendly owners!

They built it around a bunch of trees, really cool design. They also give great surf lessons.

Top Local Tips for Samara

research the weather Weather affects how much sun you get, how good the waves are for surfing, etc. Talk to somebody in Samara for this information - the people at Tico Adventure Lodge and C+C Surf Shop are the most informative.

Turtles!! Go turtle-watching with carrillo tours. they are cheaper than the other companies. The tour guides are well informed and knowledgeable. Tour is great fun- see turtles lay eggs and maybe even see baby turtles emerge from their eggs. The beach is gorgeous. Overall a great activity if you're in samara.

La locanda/Samara beach Costa Rica We loved La locanda, hotel/restaurant on the beach. If you turn right at Tico lodge going down to the beach, you will find the hotel restaurant. The restaurant sits on the beach and at noon, it is extremely cool. Good food and great juices. We went there every lunch and couldn't get enough. They have organic meat. The only soda on the main street has greasy food but huge pina coladas! El Largato has beautiful, romantic setting and great cocktails but food is a bit overpriced!
