Top Local Tips for Heredia

Find a good taxi driver and stick with him! Taxi drivers are only $15 USD per hour, which is cheap by USA standards. Most of these guys make pretty good guides. San Jose is not located really close to any sightseeing, so you're looking at a minimum 2 hour drive (usually through mountainous & windy roads) to get to beach, volcanoes, etc. And even in town, getting around on your own is virtually impossible. No street signs, no addresses anywhere. Our driver got to know us, took us to great restaurants, night spots, etc. and acted as our translator (most people in town do not speak English).

Front desk being helpful When arriving in a foreign country, the language barrier appears. There was none here as the front desk at Ramada Plaza Herradura had a staff that could answer any question. Make sure your hotel has staff that will speak to you and understand you.

Airport tax - leaving Costa Rica All people (nationals or visitors) leaving SJO need to pay a $26 (or a bit over 13,000 colones) before exiting the country. There is no reason to pay the airport tax in your hotel. The tourist office in the Ramada Herradura charged five dollars more to pay it there. If you want to be sure it's paid before you go to the airport, you can pay it at a bank. Otherwise, there was a 30-second wait at the airport for the tax, even though there was a 30-minute wait to check in at the Delta counter. You need to pay the airport tax before checking in.
