Getting around the city of Alajuela The actual center of Alajuela is a bit tricky to get around, as there are literally no street signs. We managed to get around all of Costa Rica without a hitch, but did get lost at the end of our trip in Alajuela. There are a lot of one ways, which are fine once you get used to them. Also, currently a bunch of streets in the city center are being dug up, which also makes things a bit chaotic. My advice is to get good directions to your hotel if you are staying in this area or if you have to drive through this area. The center/downtown is worth exploring, but it would probably be easiest to do if you get a taxi from your hotel or take public transportation, as parking looked simply impossible (and I have parked in NY, Boston, Philly, and San Francisco, and I think it'd be more difficult than that), plus you probably wouldn't want to leave your rental car on the street here for safety issues.
