My husband and I are experienced travellers. Last fall we booked our annual vacation to Costa Rica for the relaxation, golf, weather, gambling and price of the Martino Resort. (2500 US during off season plus meals, excluding airfare) We arrived the last week of October to the Martino Resort which looked great to us! We had spoken and emailed the Martino Resort several times after hurricane Katrina to change our itinerary as my husband is in the medical field and they were very accommodating. We arrived in the San Jose airport and after going through an arduous process we finally arrived at the Martino Resort and Casino. They placed us in a very below average room with ants, poor cleanliness (w/an occupancy rate of only 25% according to the disgruntled workers). Next we incurred the spa services which were paid by us. Seems the masseuses cannot get up in "hurricane" season to do massages or a full day of beauty. (Always late and unhappy) However; the facilities are beautiful and the gym is excellent. The paid food plan was dismal according to US standards, the waitstaff apologetic and guiding us to other restaurants and hotels for better food. The casino was closed, which of course the Martino Resort forgot to mention upon booking (some problem w/the liquor license according to the staff, although the casino during our stay was opened briefly two nights during our stay) The highlight was when after rafting I slipped and broke my ankle on the wet tile at the Martino Resort while going to my room. Management did call but other than the call, they offered no assistance other than a cane and the horrible taxi (for which we had to pay) thus cutting our vacation 3 days short. Adding insult to injury there was NO credit for the (3) days we didn't use. We are not saying don't go to Costa Rica; just don't go to the Martino Resort.
