The Perfect Paradise!

from A TripAdvisor Member
If you are looking for something romantic, secluded, and simply exquisite then you need to book a vacation with Victoria House! My husband and I returned from our honeymoon last week and couldn't be more impressed and pleased. We have both been to San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) several other times and stayed in many resorts. But, this place far exceeds ANY resort on the island. We stayed in the Tower Suite which is located inside a large villa with its own private pool and I was blown away by how spacious the bedroom and bathroom were. It is a wonderful room for romance! If you cant afford this type room, we also saw the other places to stay in the resort and they all looked great! The food is a little expensive, but well worth the money. Best Restaurant in town! The staff are wonderful and make you feel right at home. You can snorkel, fish, dive, visit the mayan ruins, and several other activities. You wont want to spend very much time in town, except when wanting to try a new restaurant other than the resorts'. This is the place for you if you are needing a getaway from the big city and want to relax! I would never stay anywhere other than the Victoria House again! Trust me, this place is well worth the money!

Beautiful, but not exceptional

from Kerrierich
The grounds at Victoria House are absolutely beautiful. Even though you can't swim off of the beach, it is gorgeous and very clean. You can see the ocean from the pool, so it's almost like you're swimming in it.

We stayed in a casita, and while it was nice, it was nothing spectacular. They are air conditioned, but the air conditioner doesn't work very well... We finally figured out that you had to turn off the fan and turn the air on it's lowest setting to make it comfortable. We sweated through a couple of nights before we figured that out. The casita was small and simple, but very clean.

The food was good. Actually, the appetizers, the salads, and the desserts at dinner were excellent. The entrees were just okay. The air conditioner was usually not working in the restaurant so it was pretty warm in there, but not unbearable. Breakfast and lunch were both pretty good.

The dive shop will accomodate you in any way. Any kind of trip you want to plan, they'll make it happen.

The town was quaint, but it was pretty dull... we were there during the low season, so maybe that was the reason. We ended up in bed most nights by 10:00. Bring lots and lots of books - it's amazing how much time you'll have withouth tv and radio!

All in all it was a great vacation. It was beautiful and very relaxing. I enjoyed it, but am not sure I'll be back.

Best Hotel in Ambergris Caye, but not the best beach.

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and we LOVED it. It is definitely the nicest hotel in Ambergris from what I can tell driving around the island. The food is amazing. We ate there almost every meal and never got tired of it because they change the menu every night!

The staff catered to our every need. We just told them what we wanted to do for the day and they scheduled it for us! The best part is, almost all of it was private or semi-private including fishing, diving, snorkeling, and day trips. At dinner, the chefs even cooked and served us the fish we caught!

The only complaint we had was the beach. The hotel sits on a bulkhead and the water is only accessible by the pier or down a flight of stairs. Even then, the water was full of seagrass and highly poisonous box jellyfish. Boats also ZOOM by very close to shore. Snorkel and swim at your own risk!

Fantastic honeymoon!!

HONEYMOON REVIEW!!

Victoria House in Ambergris Caye, Belize

ACCOMMODATIONS:

GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS!! I have nothing but raves about this place. It was incredible, and completely relaxing!!
We stayed in the Rainforest Suite (aka the honeymoon suite) and it was spectacular. We were so close to the water...it was like having our own private house right there on the beach! We had a HUGE deck that we ate breakfast on pretty much every day (they would deliver it right to us). Also all of the doors opened up so that you could basically open up the entire place and just feel the breeze (there is ALWAYS a breeze and at night it gets stronger) and stare at the water!
We looked at the Casitas there, and they looked small but really nice. They all have nice water views too. Number 1 is really close to the restaurant though, but 1 & 2 have a larger porch with their own private hammocks. Number 10 was closest to our place which means a shorter walk to the beach, but none of them are far.
We got the romance package and it included several excursions and all meals. It was definitely worth it. We pretty much stuck to eating at the resort because we knew everything there was washed with purified water and the ice was even purified. I am sure that there were many other great places to eat....but honestly by the end of the day we were exhausted and just didn’t want to get in a cab or grab a golf cart to go to dinner.

FOOD:
The food was fabulous (at Palmilla)...I STRONGLY recommend the grouper if you like fish it was really really good. Also my husband SWEARS by the caesar salad and the tenderloin. However, most of the food there has a little kick to it, so if you don’t like spicy food you might have to search for more bland things on the menu. The bar also serves dinner (same menu) so you can sit closer to the water and relax more. The bartenders are really great there. Breakfast is served from 6:30 am-9:30am, lunch from 12:00-2:00, and dinner from 6:30-9:00 you need reservations for dinner...but they are always easy to get. The bar fills in the gaps in between and you can pretty much get breakfast food and lunch there from 9:30-12:00 noon, and then you can get a menu of snacks and burgers etc..in the in between hours.

DRINKS:
My husband loved the local beer the Belikan (or something like that) it comes regular and stout. Any of their bar drinks are really good.

EXCURSIONS:
Altun Ha ruins: To be honest, neither one of us was really excited about this trip, but it was included so we went. Actually it was really a blast. You start out with a boat ride of 45 min or so and you come to this TINY village where they sell really neat wood carvings and stuff...all handmade...it was really fascinating. Then you take this bus to the Altun Ha site. Then the ruins, again not that exciting for us but still informative. Next you get back on the bus and go to lunch at this place called Maruba which is a resort and spa in the jungle. We ate in a treehouse..great food by the way. Since it was only us and one other couple we had time to choose to do a couple of things. So we chose to go horseback riding through the jungle, then had a “mood mud massage”. The horseback riding was really neat because you got to see more of the country, and some interesting wildlife. However the mood mud massage was a BLAST!! They take this white mud and cover you from head to toe (they give you disposable undies)..then they cover you up with leaves and will take pictures....honestly we could not stop laughing at the end...but the massage itself was very relaxing. Finally you rinse off in a mineral bath covered in hibiscus....it was a really fun day (but it is an all day trip)

Two-stop snorkel: Again, a blast. We had a great guide George. You can choose to go at 9 am or 2pm and we chose the morning trip. I am usually a baby about water temp, but it felt GREAT at 9 am. The first stop is a national park and you do see gorgeous fish and even a large barracuda! Next you go to shark ray alley where there are tons of different sharks from nurse to hammerheads etc...and if your guide has squid they will all be there. You will also see large stingrays as well. It is about 2 to 2 ½ hours and a nice way to start the day.

Golf Cart for a day: I highly suggest this. The main transportation on the island is via golf cart. So rent one and go see the city. We had fun, but be warned that in the city it is SUPER hot!! Definitely take water, and all the souvenirs are pretty expensive on the island because everything has to be flown in or brought on boat.

Sunset Cruise: One of the highlights of the trip!! Bring a jacket because the breeze gets pretty strong at night on the water. It was so nice and relaxing, and a great way to see the island from a water view. Very romantic!!

Cave tubing: WE HAD A BLAST!!! This was by far the best thing we did. First we took a flight into the municipal airport in Belize and met up with our guide. We were the only couple going that day so it was great. We the took about an hour drive to the rainforest and the caves. We had a short hike through the rainforest....it was really gorgeous, and then hopped in our tubes to float in the most clear, cool, calm water ever!! It was so relaxing. We floated down the river through the caves and saw some really interesting things. You do get a flashlight, and the water is not even that deep. It was a great relaxing day. After that we stopped and ate at a really good restaurant, and had the best fruit punch ever!! Made our way home, hopped our 15 min flight back and relaxed at the pool.

Overall the resort and experiences were fantastic. It is a place that you can go to do nothing but relax and enjoy the beach and pool, or you can see the country. We plan to go back for sure! The resort was so nice because it did not feel crowded at all...every once in a while you would see another couple, but mainly we felt as if we had it to ourselves. We enjoyed the hammocks, and our own little tiki hut right by the water. We spent a lot of time reading, relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Everyone we met at the resort and in the country was SO friendly! No complaints here!!

Loved it!

Victoria House was the second part of our vacation...we really enjoyed our stay there! Beautiful and clean! Food is yummy. Bar staff fun and nice. Front staff not so great, but a huge wedding party played into that. Only complaint was the wedding. Pretty much took over the resort...and I think this happens every week. Thank goodness they all arrived on the latter part of our stay. We would definately go back though. We have traveled to many Island vacations and this one was special.

Better than we imagined!

My husband and I just returned from Victoria House (our belated honeymoon) and talked the entire plane ride home about how we can't wait to go back. I warn you, this might get a bit lengthy---but the entire staff at Victoria House deserves the highest praise. We did the 7 night love package and stayed in one of the Plantation Suites. After calculating, we would definitely recommend this package, it was a deal considering all the great activities, amazing food, plus all taxes and tips were included (tax on everything in Belize is 9%) as well as, transportation to and from the mainland and to and from the resort. From the minute we were picked up from the San Pedro airport to the minute we were dropped off, we were treated with the utmost kindness and first class service. First of all, none of the pictures do this place justice; the grounds are immaculate (beach raked daily) and you can't imagine the lush flowers and trees that make up the amazing landscape. You can dine in the beautiful white linen table cloth dining room (still w/out shoes if you want) or the patio overlooking the pool and sea or in the real laid back setting of Admiral Nelson's bar. The food in one word is AWESOME, I think we both gained 10 lbs. The cashew crusted grouper, coconut curry beef tips, snapper cakes, ceveche, roasted chili caesar, molten chocolate, and key lime tart brulle are to die for! Hats off to chef Amy. Oscar, Miguel, Julio, and all the ladies will take great care of you. Be prepared to have a great time at the bar too. The guys are simply the best, so friendly, funny, and great to talk with. Stone, Alberto, Enrique, and Ken, we miss you! Second, Javier can arrange any day trips right from the docks dive shop. A schedule is posted the day prior for the next day’s activities. If you are going to do a trip to the ruins, our suggestion is Lamani. A trip to Altun Ha was part of our package but because of a few recommendations from other guests and my favorite bartender, Alberto, we paid the difference and went to Lamani---it was great! Fishing is unbelievable; if you want our recommendation for a guide, ask Javier for one of the Bradley brothers (we loved Roberto). Two other Bradley brothers (Hisinto & Alberto) will give you a great trip to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley for snorkeling. And the sunset sail w/ Geraldo on El Gato was really beautiful. Just lounging by the well cared for pool was really nice too. The accommodations are fabulous w/ the private patio, down bedding, terra cotta floors, and spanish tiled shower. This is by far the best place on Ambergris! If you are looking for the best location, the most service hearted staff, amazing food, great accommodations and amenities, and effortless access to activities, this is your place. It is without hesitation that we recommend this piece of paradise to anyone!!

Many, many children!

from mjmorin
Victoria House is definitely the luxury hotel of Ambergris Caye and the rooms (plantation room) were lovely. Be sure to reserve one with the chaise lounges. This is Belize afterall and U.S. expectations have to be adjusted.
We travelled with another couple and purchased the dive package which included all meals. The diving was stellar and the four of us were usually the only ones on the dives. Very professional organization although the woman scheduling dives/activities is cognitively impaired. We found the food to be excellent.
The only complaint was the number of children (typically with nannies) staying at the hotel: a total of 10 children less than the age of 5. It made using the pool difficult and breakfast/lunch involved the usual problems encountered with young children. We typically avoid situations like this on vacation and after the reviews of others on this site, we were dumbfounded on arrival. Although lovely, this is much more of a family oriented establishment than billed and will be disappointing to some.

Absolute Paradise!

We just returned from an absolutely amazing stay at the Victoria House! I couldn't recommend it highly enough. The casitas have a tropical charm- with A/C, wonderful down bedding, and fresh flowers daily provided by the wonderful housekeeping staff. The grounds are gorgeous, and well cared for.
The restaurant at Victoria House (Palmilla) is by far the best on the island! Wonderful service, and amazing food!
The beach is groomed daily, making it the nicest we saw on the island!
The entire staff at Victoria House does such a great job. Everyone there treats the guests like cherished family members.- You leave feeling like you are leaving family.
We will absolutely go back & would not even consider staying anywhere else!!!!

Best lodging choice in Ambergris Caye

from reddyn
We just spent a week in Ambergris Caye. We decided to stay at the Victoria House based on multiple online reviews. Victoria House lived up to our expectations. It is by far the nicest place to stay in Ambergris Caye, excluding Cayo Espanto. The rooms vary in price. I think the lowest end room is $150.00 because of it's lack of a private balcony. We stayed here fo 3 nights and then moved to another room which cost $270.00. This had to do with room availability. Both rooms were quite nice. I would say, if economics are a factor, there is very little difference in comfort level between these rooms. The facilities here are immaculate. I took a bicycle around and just passing some of the other resorts, I think it's fair to say that Victoria House has the nicest facilities, a well maintained beach, attentive staff. In geneeral, there is a tremendous amount of sea grass in the ocean no matter where you go. Luckily, Victoria House has a nice pool which faces the ocean. If you're planning to go scuba diving, it's probably better to go with Amigos Del Mar. They're very reputable and charge less for paddie certication. However, if you plan to go to the Mayan ruins such as Lamanai or Altun-ha, the resort prices are the same as all the other tour companies, and it's easier to coordiate with the resort. If I were to go back to Ambergris. I would definitely stay at Victoria House again.

Perfect

Beautiful, immaculate hotel and beautiful private beach. The staff was very attentive and excellent. The rooms were fabulous and the food surprisingly good. Definitely the best place to stay on the island. If you're interested in seeing the jungle/mountains on the mainland, try Blancaneaux. Fabulous also.

Top Local Tips for San Pedro

Victoria House There are other choices with better value. I would not recommend the meal plan there are plenty of good eating establishments on the island with a much better value.

great taxis we would take a taxi at night to go to dinner and back, and it was usually $5.00 us each way. i wouldn't walk to vic house at night, but during the day it was totally ok.

golf carts don't rent from hotel, much cheaper elsewhere on island. Use the bicycles!
