Wonderful Vacation at Banyan Bay
from Elizabeth1482We walked into town one day and it took about 15 min.
or you can rent a golf cart for about $60.00 US plus gas for 24 hours. (they also offer hourly rental) We did eat at the restaurant (Rico's) a couple of times for lunch and the food and service were both very good and the prices are quite reasonable. The only place we ate in town was Caliente's which is beachfront and has excellant food for a great price. The beach wasn't like what you will find on an island because there is a lot of seaweed, but the pool is very nice. We went to Belize for the scuba diving and we were not disappointed. We booked two all-day dives with Amigos Del Mar - one to Tourneffe South and the other to the Blue Hole/Lighthouse Reef and both days were excellent. We also booked a snokel trip with them to Shark/Ray alley and saw Nurse Sharks, lots of Rays and Sea Turtles. Banyan Bay has a dock and dive shop where you can book excursions and even though we didn't book through them our dive company was able to pick us up right there at our dock so it was very convenient. I can't wait to return to Belize and I will definately stay at Banyan Bay again for their great location and service.
excellent villas, nice beach, but terible servce and restaurant
from zzkkPros: Spacious, handsome, and well-equipped apartments; nice sandy beach; attractive pool
Cons: Awful service; terible restaurant (Ricos); avoid the Banyan Bay dive shop if you have children
Great time at Banyan Bay!
from lynnieGreat Family Vacation
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe staff were great and took care of all requests promptly. Eli at the activities desk had a bit of an attitude but all of her recommendations and arrangements (fishing, diving, and Mayan ruin trip) were good.
The hotel is walking distance from town which was a boon with our younger (ages 18 to 24) family members. But, it is important to understand that San Pedro is a really small place. All the real sight seeing is on the mainland or out on the water.
Finally, Rico's Restaurant is great. Book the table out on the dock. You can feed any leftovers to the moray eel that lives under the dock. Very cool!
What a great place to stay!

from A TripAdvisor MemberBanyan Bay Report
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe room gave us so much elbow room! We cooked our own breakfasts and some lunches. It also allowed me to cook what I caught on my flats fishing charter.
We only dined once on site. It was OK. But then again, nothing on the island was stellar in the dining department. The bar was a disspointment in that one hopes for a fun assortment of tropical drinks and they just did the standards. One could argue that this is not the sort of hotel that one would "party" at so it was fine.
The dive shop is well run and Eli took care of all our arrangements. HOWEVER, the diving itself was a huge disappointment. We booked our trip to Belize on reports that it is world class diving. It was not. We did 7 dives and were bored on most of them. It was exciting to swin with sharks but the diversity and denstiy of marine life was pretty poor. We did not do the famous Blue Hole dive as its' a 12 hour committment for 10-12 minutes of bottom time.
I've been diving in the Caribbean for 23 years and I think I can tell good from bad. IMHO, do not go to Belize if diving is your primarly criteria. We did Aruba last year which is NOT regarded as world class and it was far better than Belize.
Back to the hotel, it is a great place to relax and enjoy private time. There are simply not enough rooms there to allow it to feel crowded. The pool is fantastic. The beach is small, but they all are in that part of the Island.
The hotel has a fleet of golf carts to rent. You will need one to get around and to explore. It allowed us to come and go as we wanted.
To conclude, I would surely recommend Banyan Bay. As long as your expectations are set correctly, you'll love it.
banyan bay is great!
from A TripAdvisor Memberwe had an oceanview 2nd floor condo - it was huge and very well kept! the maid service is incredible and they leave you a gallon of water everyday.
the beach does have a lot of seagrass (like the rest of the island), but the resort does a good job of cleaning it up everyday. there are plenty of beach chairs and the pool is huge.
the front desk staff was always attentive and very friendly. we were asked one time if we were interested in learning about the timeshare program, we said no and we were never bothered again.
we would definitely recommend renting a golf course for your stay though since going into town can be a hot, humid walk. and it's also a great way to see the island.
we loved eating at Papi's, Elvi's, Estel's!
you'll love banyan bay and ambergris!!
Very Comfortable!
from astridaThe only drawback to our trip perhaps was that Banyan Bay is actively trying to sell units as condos & timeshares. There was an agressive dutch salesman who-- once we finally told him we had no intention of going to his sales pitch-- desisted in his pitching. Then later at one point we basically had to surrender our room for an hour to let a nosy next door neighbor 'buyer' check it out. All the real estate stuff sort of bummed us out about visiting Banyan Bay again. We'd rather go somewhere that we know will still be available next year.
Best of San Pedro for under $100
from sp2001Our apartment was on the first floor (there are 2). The front room had a fully stocked kitchen, a TV with 90 channels, a table with 4 chairs and 3 little loveseats. The bedroom had a bed (not luxury, but fine), a closet, a dresser and a computer table (with no computer). The bathroom, with shower only, was off the bedroom.
We were quite happy with the apartment. There was daily maid service, you are basically across the street from a small market, and although you are on the main road and close to the airport, we never heard any noise while in our apartment. The pool and beach at Banyan Bay were the best of any place we saw, and the boat trips off their dock were reasonably priced and excellent.
While there were aspects of San Pedro that we didn't care for we were quite happy staying at Coral Reef. I'd recomment it if you are trying to save some money but still enjoy Ambergris.
Top Local Tips for San Pedro
Ambergris Caye Polo's golf carts were the least expensive that we found. But, you get what you payfor. All electric carts so they need to be switched out every day. Most dining places are not very good. Rico's was bad. Portofino was okay but not worth the price. Mango's was okay. Fido's was okay but seemed pricey for what it is. Victoria's Cottage was great. Take a trip with Carr' bean Tours. Oscar and Ernesto are great fun and you will have a great time with them. We did a full day manatee tour, saw manatees, snorkeled, had a great lunch on Caye St. George(?) and learned a lot about the island. You won't be sorry spending time with these guys.
try all the food belizean Rice and the Lime popcorn and you have to have a Panty Ripper
Romance Under the Stars Asian Garden Day Spa has an awesome couples massage at night. San Pedro can be really windy, so massages on the beach aren't possible. Asian Garden offers a couples massage in a really nice garden courtyard. I saw the other reviews on Trip Advisor and I agree that this is one of the "must do" attractions on the island. After diving all day, it was the perfect luxury. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the massage was.
