Wonderful Vacation at Banyan Bay

from Elizabeth1482
My husband and I stayed at the Banyan Bay with our 15 year old son over Spring Break in March 2006 and had a wonderful time. We had a beachfront unit that was two bedroom/two bath which made it nice for our son to have his own space. There were a lot of kids his age and he made friends quickly. The unit has a full kitchen and we brought a lot of our own food, but there is also a small grocery only about a block down the street as well as a fully stocked store in town.
We walked into town one day and it took about 15 min.
or you can rent a golf cart for about $60.00 US plus gas for 24 hours. (they also offer hourly rental) We did eat at the restaurant (Rico's) a couple of times for lunch and the food and service were both very good and the prices are quite reasonable. The only place we ate in town was Caliente's which is beachfront and has excellant food for a great price. The beach wasn't like what you will find on an island because there is a lot of seaweed, but the pool is very nice. We went to Belize for the scuba diving and we were not disappointed. We booked two all-day dives with Amigos Del Mar - one to Tourneffe South and the other to the Blue Hole/Lighthouse Reef and both days were excellent. We also booked a snokel trip with them to Shark/Ray alley and saw Nurse Sharks, lots of Rays and Sea Turtles. Banyan Bay has a dock and dive shop where you can book excursions and even though we didn't book through them our dive company was able to pick us up right there at our dock so it was very convenient. I can't wait to return to Belize and I will definately stay at Banyan Bay again for their great location and service.

excellent villas, nice beach, but terible servce and restaurant

from zzkk
My family and I just spent four night at the Villas at Banyan Bay, in Ambergris Caye.

Pros: Spacious, handsome, and well-equipped apartments; nice sandy beach; attractive pool

Cons: Awful service; terible restaurant (Ricos); avoid the Banyan Bay dive shop if you have children

Great time at Banyan Bay!

from lynnie
We spent Thanksgiving week at the Villas at Banyan Bay with our 2 girls, ages 13 and 9...along with our extended family ranging in age from 9 to 70. The grounds of the resort were beautiful and lush, well maintained and clean. The rooms were all spacious, although each condo was decorated differently, depending on how the owner decorated. Some rooms were definitely homier than others, but all had the same basic furnishings. The maid service was great. Most of the staff we encountered were quite friendly and helpful. The ocean front room we were in was just that....steps away from a decent beach...not as wide and expansive as other Caribbean islands we've been to, but we knew to expect that. Sea grass in the ocean, due to the reef, made swimming and wading an adventure! A few people in our group rented a kayak on the weekend and went out to the reef...it is quite a ways out there, so make sure you are strong enough to paddle there and back! We were disappointed that during the week, there wasn't anyone available to rent the kayak to us again, or the glass bottom boat. Come to find out, the glass bottom boat was missing oars anyway. The atmosphere at Rico's restaurant was quite nice, right on the dock. The food was average. The pool was beautiful with three different levels. It was clean and well maintained with nice lounge chairs with umbrellas to stay out of the sun if you wanted to. We were disappointed that the swim up bar was not stocked or staffed. Looked at a few other resorts, from the outside, while we were there, and Banyan Bay has definitely some of the best landscaping, beach, and pools that we saw. Overall, a great resort that I would definitely recommend!

Great Family Vacation

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Banyan Bay for a week in November 2005, booking two upper level beachfront suites for 7 people. The suites are large and well appointed. Having a full kitchen was a big advantage for a family. There is a food store close by. Each suite had a different decor based on its owner. One had murals painted on the walls - very nice. Beachfront really means it. Our suites were less than 100 feet from the water.
The staff were great and took care of all requests promptly. Eli at the activities desk had a bit of an attitude but all of her recommendations and arrangements (fishing, diving, and Mayan ruin trip) were good.
The hotel is walking distance from town which was a boon with our younger (ages 18 to 24) family members. But, it is important to understand that San Pedro is a really small place. All the real sight seeing is on the mainland or out on the water.
Finally, Rico's Restaurant is great. Book the table out on the dock. You can feed any leftovers to the moray eel that lives under the dock. Very cool!

What a great place to stay!

We spent one week in San Pedro and stayed at the Villas at Banyan Bay. This is a really great place to stay! The rooms were kept spotless and were very well equipped with everything we needed. We cooked breakfast and a few lunches and ate out for dinner each night. The views were fabulous and we spent alot of time on the verandah just enjoying life. We walked into town each day and found the walk to be enjoyable. Everyone at the resort was most helpful and we will definately be going back to San Pedro and hopefully staying again at the Villas at Banyan Bay.

t get burned

The resort at Banyon Bay is a great vacation spot just be careful they don't try to sell you a timeshare. We were told we would get a refund of our deposit (12,000 USD) if after we returned to the states we felt it was not what we wanted. We decided that we weren't going to buy the timeshare but we have never received our deposit back now over 9 months later. Even RCI the international consortium to which the Banyon Bay Villas belongs hasn't been able to refund us our deposit. So be careful and don't get burned.

Banyan Bay Report

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I just got back from 6 nights at Banyan Bay. The hotel was great. It is very well kept (although showing a bit of wear around the edges). and super clean. The staff was amazing. We were never ever approached about a time share.

The room gave us so much elbow room! We cooked our own breakfasts and some lunches. It also allowed me to cook what I caught on my flats fishing charter.

We only dined once on site. It was OK. But then again, nothing on the island was stellar in the dining department. The bar was a disspointment in that one hopes for a fun assortment of tropical drinks and they just did the standards. One could argue that this is not the sort of hotel that one would "party" at so it was fine.

The dive shop is well run and Eli took care of all our arrangements. HOWEVER, the diving itself was a huge disappointment. We booked our trip to Belize on reports that it is world class diving. It was not. We did 7 dives and were bored on most of them. It was exciting to swin with sharks but the diversity and denstiy of marine life was pretty poor. We did not do the famous Blue Hole dive as its' a 12 hour committment for 10-12 minutes of bottom time.

I've been diving in the Caribbean for 23 years and I think I can tell good from bad. IMHO, do not go to Belize if diving is your primarly criteria. We did Aruba last year which is NOT regarded as world class and it was far better than Belize.

Back to the hotel, it is a great place to relax and enjoy private time. There are simply not enough rooms there to allow it to feel crowded. The pool is fantastic. The beach is small, but they all are in that part of the Island.

The hotel has a fleet of golf carts to rent. You will need one to get around and to explore. It allowed us to come and go as we wanted.

To conclude, I would surely recommend Banyan Bay. As long as your expectations are set correctly, you'll love it.

banyan bay is great!

from A TripAdvisor Member
we stayed at banyan bay for our honeymoon for 10 days at the beginning of june and loved it!
we had an oceanview 2nd floor condo - it was huge and very well kept! the maid service is incredible and they leave you a gallon of water everyday.
the beach does have a lot of seagrass (like the rest of the island), but the resort does a good job of cleaning it up everyday. there are plenty of beach chairs and the pool is huge.

the front desk staff was always attentive and very friendly. we were asked one time if we were interested in learning about the timeshare program, we said no and we were never bothered again.

we would definitely recommend renting a golf course for your stay though since going into town can be a hot, humid walk. and it's also a great way to see the island.

we loved eating at Papi's, Elvi's, Estel's!

you'll love banyan bay and ambergris!!

Very Comfortable!

from astrida
We just came back from an 8 day stay at Banyan Bay, and found the experience very comfortable. The rooms are spacious and super clean-- the maids do a stunning job keeping everything free of sand. Our room was towards the front of the rooms by the pool on the top floor-- which I recommend because the ground floor rooms have lower ceilings, which makes them a bit less spacious and less exciting view. We ate at the restaurant a couple of times and the food was not gourmet, but good-- and portions were enormous. Beach at Banyan was ok, lots of sea grass-- and windy nights churned up the water to the point that we didn't swim much. The pool was nice though! Dive shop booked us all on a delightful snorkel tour of Hoi Chan, which we liked so much we'd do again.
The only drawback to our trip perhaps was that Banyan Bay is actively trying to sell units as condos & timeshares. There was an agressive dutch salesman who-- once we finally told him we had no intention of going to his sales pitch-- desisted in his pitching. Then later at one point we basically had to surrender our room for an hour to let a nosy next door neighbor 'buyer' check it out. All the real estate stuff sort of bummed us out about visiting Banyan Bay again. We'd rather go somewhere that we know will still be available next year.

Best of San Pedro for under $100

from sp2001
Coral Reef Villas are managed by Banyan Bay Villas and are about a half mile south of the center of San Pedro. They rent at $75 US a night for a 1 room apartment. You are less than a minute walk along the main road from Banyan Bay, and you are treated as one of their guests, so you can use the pool, charge to your room at the restaurant, etc...
Our apartment was on the first floor (there are 2). The front room had a fully stocked kitchen, a TV with 90 channels, a table with 4 chairs and 3 little loveseats. The bedroom had a bed (not luxury, but fine), a closet, a dresser and a computer table (with no computer). The bathroom, with shower only, was off the bedroom.
We were quite happy with the apartment. There was daily maid service, you are basically across the street from a small market, and although you are on the main road and close to the airport, we never heard any noise while in our apartment. The pool and beach at Banyan Bay were the best of any place we saw, and the boat trips off their dock were reasonably priced and excellent.
While there were aspects of San Pedro that we didn't care for we were quite happy staying at Coral Reef. I'd recomment it if you are trying to save some money but still enjoy Ambergris.

Top Local Tips for San Pedro

Ambergris Caye Polo's golf carts were the least expensive that we found. But, you get what you payfor. All electric carts so they need to be switched out every day. Most dining places are not very good. Rico's was bad. Portofino was okay but not worth the price. Mango's was okay. Fido's was okay but seemed pricey for what it is. Victoria's Cottage was great. Take a trip with Carr' bean Tours. Oscar and Ernesto are great fun and you will have a great time with them. We did a full day manatee tour, saw manatees, snorkeled, had a great lunch on Caye St. George(?) and learned a lot about the island. You won't be sorry spending time with these guys.

try all the food belizean Rice and the Lime popcorn and you have to have a Panty Ripper

Romance Under the Stars Asian Garden Day Spa has an awesome couples massage at night. San Pedro can be really windy, so massages on the beach aren't possible. Asian Garden offers a couples massage in a really nice garden courtyard. I saw the other reviews on Trip Advisor and I agree that this is one of the "must do" attractions on the island. After diving all day, it was the perfect luxury. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the massage was.
