Beware the sand flees Sand flees can ruin your day. When you feel them biting, immediately shower to remove them. I used antiseptic cream on my lower legs and ankles after the first attack and that seemed to keep them away. Small biting things always seem to find me....

Carnival in San Pedro We were in San Pedro in early Feb 08 and found its a tradition that, for three days, the local kids go wild and cover each other, and everything in paint and eggs. At some times there were around 200 kids running wild on the beach. Its great fun for the kids but not so much for adults and tourists. I had to duck to avoid an egg (right in front of the police) and got oil based paint all over a pair of shorts. (the kids are meant to use water based paint but clearly they resort to whatever they can get hold of.) We were told that generally adults and tourists are left alone...until day 3, when older kids get involved and it becomes a free for all. We decided at that point to head back to Caye Caulker where the locals werent even aware of the San Pedro tradition. Don't let in put you off going, but if you are of a nervous disposition you may want to stay away from the beach and Front Street!

Golf carts Don´t bother renting a car. rent a golf cart. Especially if you are about to charter a yacht.You can bring your groceries to your boat conveniently. Also, use it to check out the island. It will take about an hour.
