Go snorkling with Alfonse

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a very nice hotel with lovely, well-kept grounds. The deluxe rooms are pretty basic, but clean and they have mini-refrigerators, microwaves, toasters and blenders. The suites have their own kitchens. This is a good thing, because food prices on Ambergris Caye are pretty high. All the rooms face the beach and have porches where you can sit and enjoy the view. A highlight of the hotel is the dock, where you can just relax in a hammock, swim or dive (or lie in the sun if that's your thing). There's also a "people perch" on the grounds where you can watch birds. You can rent bikes for the day and explore. The best experience we had was snorkeling with Alfonse, who is an amazing guide. The hotel will set you up with him, but you need to rent your own equipment through a dive shop. This man knows the coral reefs like the back of his hand, and even knows some of the fish personally! He took us to Hol Chan and we swam EVERYWHERE (not for those who aren't in shape) while he pointed out dozens of different kinds of fish -- from barracudas to snapper to a morel eel! We saw a whole new world. Then Alfonse took us to Shark Ray Alley, where he literally picked up and petted sharks and sting rays, lured with bait, and held them for us to pet. Someone called him the "Shark Whisperer" and I have to concur. What an incredible experience.

Wonderful, relaxing, comfortable

Caribbean Villas was a highlight of our vacation! The hotel is set back a little from the main road as it is surrounded by an beautiful forest with trails. The original owner obviously knew that the forest provided incredible bird watching as well as cooler temperatures. We visited in late Feb/early March and only used our air conditioning if we were "home" during the hottest part of the day.
The rooms are extremely clean and have charming character. We spent the first few nights in a "regular" room, then spent the last night in the deluxe room. WOW! 1 king size bed downstairs, and 2 twin beds in the upstairs loft. Full kitchen, comfy sitting area, and fantastic view. We wished we had invited our friends to vacation with us and share this room! Caribbean Villas even has 2 outdoor hot tubs if you can stand the heat.
The staff genuinely seem to be happy to work here. We were met promptly at the airport, and the golf cart tour of the island made us feel very comfortable. All staff members (office staff, caretaker/grounds keepers, security guards, and housekeeping staff) offered suggestions as to good places to eat, places to see, and went above an beyond my expectations. (Everyone was helpful without being pushy.)
Ambergris Caye, as well as other barrier islands, are unique in the abundance of sea grass. Sea grass plays a key role in the reef ecosystem, as many immature fishes feed and avoid predators here. Many restaurants and hotels still remove the sea grass so tourists can swim from the beach. Instead of damaging this incredible natural resource, Caribbean Villas built a dock from the beach. From this dock, we watched dolphins playing for more than 20 minutes one morning. We were surprised at the numerous fish that were seen snorkeling under the dock - immature Angel fish (although a couple days were murky). This hotel also has the nicest beach of any of the other places we saw. You'd be better off swimming from the dock, but the beach was perfect for reading a book and being lazy. All in all - you can't go wrong here.

We purposely chose this location without TV, bar, or restaurant. There were great restaurants and fun beachside bars nearby, but we didn't have to deal with "outsiders" milling about on our hotel property. We did enjoy getting to know the few other guests staying there. Also, the grounds were beautiful, and while there is no pool, the two hot tubs provided relaxation after long days of exploring. The staff was very attentive and accommodating. We learned that while the hotel has changed ownership in the past few years, there has been no staff turnover. The Caribbean Villas was a great choice, and we would stay there again.

Quiet and Peaceful

We had a wonderful stay at the Caribbean Villas. The location cannot be beat for us. It is a 10-15 minute walk to the heart of San Pedro and just far enough away to get a feeling of seclusion. There is a loading dock just north of the villas on the beach, but did not bother us one bit. There are some great places to eat just steps away without having to go all the way into town. We ate a Casa Picasso, which was absolutely amazing and loved our breakfasts at Monkey Bites. A 5 minute walk away you will find Crazy Canuck's for a fun place to have a drink. The local crowd hangs out here and are very welcoming. Caribbean Villas has one of the nicest docks. You can swim/snorkel off the pier or just swing in the hammock and read a book. We were told not walk about past 10 pm, so we were a little concerned about safety, but had nothing to worry about at all. At sun down till late in the morning the grounds were patrolled by security. We never felt unsafe and were always reassured by the presence of the security guard. Also, there is a great lookout/bird sanctuary on the property. It is a few stories up and is a great place to watch the sun set/rise. We thought the accommodations were very comfortable and even when the power and water had shut down in other areas it never seemed to affect the Villas. The only improvement I can think of is the water pressure. It was pretty much a trickle, but probably this way everywhere. The staff was very accommodating and have books/menus/tour recommendations all available at the front desk. They also have a safe at the front desk for your passport or other valuables. We definitely recommend. A great value for the area. Enjoy!

Relaxed, laid back and good value

Stayed at Caribbean Villas for 8 nights in Nov and enjoyed my visit.

The rooms are basic but clean and functional. Try to avoid staying in their "studio" rooms above reception. There is no air-conditioning and it seemed to attract a lot of insects. It is not the same quality as their standard rooms.

Their beach area was incredibly quiet - I was often the only one there which made it more relaxing. No TV's or radio makes it even more quiet.

Good location and safe. It is short on amenities (TV, restaurant or convenience store on site) but is great value. I would definitely stay again.

loved the staff, environment

My husband and I went alone, and are returning with our children this Fall. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and accomodating. They are helpful with organizing activities and provide excellent recommendations and service. They pick you up from Tropic Air upon arrival and give you a tour around town before taking you to your room. The grounds are very beautiful and well kept, lots of birds, its own reef off its own pier (which dive outfits pick you up), and very comfortable rooms. If you choose a room with a kitchen, it is completely supplied with nice appliances. The air conditioning works wonderfully too! The hottubs are clean and they Villas provide daily housekeeping. Very highly recommended!

Caribbean Villas - Very Nice Experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at the Caribbean Villas just south of San Pedro for the second week of May, 2005. Found the price to be really good for the island.

When we got there on Saturday they picked us up from the airport after arranging our island flight. They delivered us to our room, and carried our gear. For the next few days, we took snorkel, fishing, and Lamanai trips right from our pier.

I took my own fishing gear and caught bonefish, snook, and barracuda right from the beach. There is no fishing at the end of the pier due to the artificial reef that they have placed. There were lots of fish under the pier, however the wind and barges down the beach had the water a bit sandy. But visibility for snorkeling was still okay. Fishing early was great on small jigs.

The room was basic, but clean. (AC was nice) We were out and about most of each day, so it was really just a place for us to sleep. There is security on the beach, and actually they were helpful in setting up day trips for us. The front office will handle most trips, and will deliver bottled water and supplies from the local distributor if you want.

Nothing really fancy, however just enough for me and my wife. Only drawbacks were no TV, and you had to rent the bikes. But since we only used them twice all week, the reduction in room cost was worth it. 10 minute walk to town, and the grocery stores. Coconuts Bar, Crazy Canuck, and Ricos are within 5 minutes walking.

All in all a great place.

This hotel simply for the money was well worth it, private Beach area ,nice dock ,hammocks to rest and read every where, very quiet and accomadating freindly staff .The hotel was not a cheap imitation of toruristy hotel like many others I noticed to be on ambergris.I tried to book a casita at victoria house and capricorn first but they where both booked so I went with Carribean Villas and I saved alot of money and its just far enough out of town but close enough to hop on your golf cart and eat at some great restaurants in town. just one more note diving with amigos del mar was a professional and good dive group they also pick you up at hotel dock every morning.

A tropical peaceful oasis.

We stayed at the Caribbean Villas in early March, 2005. A lovely friendly small hotel--a quiet oasis in paradise when you enter the grounds. We had a one bedroom suite, which included a full kitchen and small living room with a sofabed. The hotel is in a great location: a 20 minute walk along the beach to San Pedro, or short bike or cab ride. There is no pool or restaurant (but many within walking distance), and limited ocean swimming--but none of the beaches at Ambergris are very attractive for swimming. There is a nearby market. There are lots of birds on the grounds, and comfortable hammocks in which to enjoy the ambiance.
A word about Ambergris Cay--if you don't dive, fish, or snorkel, you may want to go somewhere else.

We Love San Pedro

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I spent Thanksgiving in San Pedro. It was our first visit and we can't wait to get back. We stayed at Carribean Villas and were very pleased. The staff was wonderful and the grounds are lovely. Our room was kept very clean each day. We went on a fishing trip with Ramone and had a ball. He cooked the fish and lobster on the beach for us. I can't tell you how good it was. We ate at Capricorn one night and the Blue Water Grill one night and they were both very good. We also ate at Elvi's Kitchen, Reef, Jambel Jerk and they were all good. For breakfast we ate at Estell's, Ruby's,George's and Calientes. Try a lobster burrito! We ate chicken and fajitas from the street vendors and it was great. We went snorkeling with Alphonso at Shark Ray Alley and had a great time. The people in San Pedro were the nicest in the world. This place is truly paradise. Best vacation I have ever had. The worst part was coming home! You have to try the fresh watermelon juice! We also spent the day at Caye Caulker. Go to the Lazy Lizard at the split. The water is beautiful and the rum punch great!

Top Local Tips for San Pedro

YUM GO to Waraguma and eat the Papusas!! Soooo good and cheap. It is a cornmeal pancake type food that has black beans and cheese inside. 1-2 of those for dinner for about $5.00 and that is all you need!

Snorkeling USE ALPHONSE! He is amazing - night snorkeling he picks up fish, explains them to you - he is so enthusiastic and wonderful with all age groups

Snorking or scuba diving. Bring your own Snorking gear and make a trip out to the barrier reef and shark alley. It was amazing seeing barracudas and sea turtles at Hol chan park and Nurse sharks and stringrays at shark alley. I swam over a shark longer than me! it was amazing.
