This paradise is not for everyone

from Treesah
I love Capt Morgan's. It's like a Polynesian village, remote and pristine. We had the one bedroom villa which was beautiful, very commodious. Two pools, one with a swim up bar. I missed not having a swimming beach but you can swim off the pier. The grounds are beautiful, the restaurant has very good food, the staff are very attentive. They have a great activities program. Malcom, the Irishman, is in a class by himself.

I was in heaven but my significant other got very bored! Nothing to do after he finished his book. I walked to San Pedro twice (3.5 miles each way). A great exercise. Capt Morgan's is for people who know how to relax. Workaholics who bring their cell phones on their vacation won't be too happy here.

Great place to hang out

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I decided to go to Belize to celebrate our Ten year anniversary (without the kids). We looked at many different places and then found Captain Morgan's, where we booked our 7 day trip. It's was great! The staff was friendly and went out their way to get us anything we needed. The rooms were nice and clean, and close to the beach. You can't really swim off the shore due to the turtle grass, but you can go off the pier of which the water is only 4-5 feet deep.

The food at the restaurant was good. The service isn't the fastest, but hey it's island time and as the Bartender Charles says, "you’re on vacation man". The staff was extremely helpful in setting up excursions to other parts of the country. We did the zip lining and cave tubing which was awesome.

I surprised my wife with a wedding vow renewal ceremony on the beach. The staff at the resort kept it a secret and was great in helping me make the plans. Thanks again Blanca!

Taking the water taxi is fun especially at night when the stars are out. I highly recommend checking out some of the local restaurants nearby. Especially Capricorn and Mambo's at Mata Chica. The Mambo restaurant at Mata Chica could be one of the coolest restaurants we have ever been to. Great atmosphere, great food, and the music make the ambiance. You over look the ocean, and the Manager, Crizzle makes you feel like you’re a friend in his own house.

Yes there were mosquitos, but that's to be expected during June in the tropics. We brought bug spray and were fine. The timeshare salesman stopped and said hello once. We told him we don't want a tour or anything, and they left us alone the whole trip. Thanks guys.

So to sum up, I recommend Captain Morgan's for a great time, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. We look forward to coming back again for some more Rum Punch and Dirty Banana cocktails!

Great Place to Relax but forget the A/C

from A TripAdvisor Member
If you want to get away from it all and just relax this is the place to do it, fantastic beach paradise with no crowding. However do not expect to be cool; the beach front cabana we stayed in was extremely hot even with the A/C running flat out. Talking to others staying there it appeared to be a common problem. Talking to the staff they recommended that we leave the door and windows open for the breeze. This may be OK for an islander who is used to the humidity, but when you are from Houston Texas and used to A/C, I do not want to lie in bed perspiring profusely. It is Obvious with this place you are paying for the location not luxury, do not expect to get US standards of accommodation it would probably rate at around a super 8 for a Hilton cost, the room had no coffee maker and do not expect to get anything from around ten at night until seven in the morning not even coffee. Also no phone or TV, this was not a problem for us as we were pleased to be away from that and for us the view and beach more than make up for the lack of amenities. We found the food and service to be good, especially Charles and Art at the pool bar, and reasonably priced by US standards. This resort is on the North side of the island, and not within walking distance of town. If water taxis are used on a regular basis this can be expensive, the resort has its own boats and the guys are happy to take you to town when they are going. The road to this resort is horrendous, it can be reached by golf cart but expect to get all of your internal organs re-arranged trying to cross the craters.
Overall we had a fantastic time here, and if A/C is not a priority I would have to highly recommend this place.

accomodations and eats

from LUBO
April 2005 my fiancee and I stayed at Captain Morgans resort in Ambergris Caye and had a wonderful time. Accomodations were secluded and quiet. The main pool is convenient to the bar. We found it very clean and refreshing. Swimming at the beach is in a roped area due to the seagrass but still a nice dip. We especially enjoyed relaxing in the beach chairs and hammocks for sunrise or the evening and sitting on the porch of our hut just watching the palm trees sway. The beach is beautiful.

The activities crew at CM was outstanding--many thanks to Lewis and Malcolm. They had several trips to offer and arranged a custom trip to that was reasonably priced and spectacular! (tuff e nuff tours--they were great!) Snorkling, cave tubing and ruins are a must on your trip to Belize!

For the most part the food service at CM was very good. We were occassionally waiting for a breakfast buffet that was very so so(the breakfast menu is much better than buffett!). However, the wait was not long and hot coffee was always available while we waited. Otherwise the food was convenient and good and the servers a little shy but once you get them talking they are very friendly. Service at the bar was excellent--especially David and Art. We really enjoyed the cold Chardonney, Dirty Bananas and Belikin. (don't drink the red wine--they store it at outdoor bar and the temp ruins the flavor) We would have liked to enjoy the CM swim up bar more but construction is underway and that's just progress...

The only negative experience we had was that front desk staff person seemed to care less that we were there but we rarely needed his services so it didn't matter.

Captain Morgans is north of town--a bit out of the way but boat service by the resort was usually going to town when we wanted to go so it was not big deal for us. Next door to CM is Capricorns restaurant--definitely the best meal we had on the trip. You'll want to make reservations and go for dinner. The food and entertainment were wonderful at this beach front lantern lite restaurant. In the other direction, you'll find Pauly's Pizza--a great lunch and further down is Belizean Shores where you should go to watch the sunset at the Laguna Grill while snacking on appetizers and sipping drinks. Leo at the swim up bar (at Belizean Shores) is exceptional and a lazy afternoon there with him is a must.

Good food in San Pedro--Caliente (homemade stuffed jalapenos and margaritas), Cafe Picasso, Elvi's for rice and beans.

We ran out of time and did not get to try many of the restaurants and such that we planned. We'll be back!!

s Where dreams become reality!!!

from BabyNena
I am so sorry to hear that someone out there thinks that Captain Morgan's is a SCAM. I personally went on the tour and loved it so much.... I bought... there are not so many resorts in Belize that can offce you a better standard of accommodations while at the same time give you the oportunity to save money wisely. I receive the 7 night vacation getaway... on the certificate "SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY BETWEEN 1ST JUNE TO 15 NOVEMBER" I honestly have no problem... on the certificate they give you three dates which you can choose for your travel dates... so that they can be used. I choose to go in October but they are booked for those dates ... so I am now visiting them in July of this year... Which gives me the break to return and guess what.... we will upgrade from a one bed every other year to a two bed every year.... so we can bring our children and our friends and family to stay with us.... I also took the tour of their penthouse and I totally loved it... but I am not ready for the Penthouse because my little one is only two years and I don't think that she is ready to be that high... we are sticking to the ground floor int he mean time. Anyway... to make it shorter... I will finalize by saying that at Captain Morgan's your dreams do become reality.... Mr & Mrs King, Medley, FL

s Retreat

from Swany
We just returned from 11 wonderful days on Ambergris Caye, we stayed at The Palms Condominiums. I just wanted to warn anyone traveling to Ambergris and staying near San Pedro about the scam we encountered with Captain Morgan’s Retreat. Just about everyday we would walk the beach and there were always a couple of guys from Captain Morgan’s Retreat out on the beach by the Sunbreeze dock. They always would make small talk as we walked by, but we usually just smiled and kept walking. I don’t know why, but one day we decided to stop and talk. Of course as we suspected before we knew it we were being talked into going to Captain Morgan’s for a time share meeting. The guy kept offering us more and more, first $100 US cash, then a $25 US restaurant voucher and we kept saying no until he said his manager was letting him give away one 1 week stay at Captain Morgan’s. We thought that would be worth our while, so we were picked up at our dock the next morning and taken the 6 or 7 minute very windy boat ride to Captain Morgan’s. To make a long story short we turned down the offer to buy and the sales person we had very coldly said that he would get our vouchers. It turns out we could only get the $25 restaurant voucher and either the $100 or the one week stay. We chose the weeks stay. When he gave us the voucher it said it was only good until Nov. 15, 2005. Upon arriving home we immediately faxed the voucher in for a week in November. We received a call the next day telling us they were all booked except for 1 week in July. We should have known it was too good to be true. So any way if you are in San Pedro and walking the beach, beware of the guys with the white polo shirts with the Captain Morgan’s Logo by the beach near the Sunbreeze Hotel and dock.
Management Response from A TripAdvisor Member
Regarding the remarks posted by a Trip Advisor/Wisconsin Titled: Scam at Captain Morgan's Retreat. I'm a represtentive of Captain Morgan's Retreat
located in the US, to this date we have booked approximently 75-100 of the Vacation Award Certificates given out to the people that have toured our property. November 2005 is sold out for the alloted rooms given for the certificates. We are currently taking reservations for June-November 2006
for the free weeks. We do not feel that we are "scamming" anybody, and always try to accomodate you on one of the three sets of dates provided.
Again, Wisconsin, who posted this comment your reservation will be accepted for Nov 2006 or any dates still available in 2005. Please contact our US

A Quiet Place to Re-charge your batteries

from Barbara
My husband and I spent President's week at Captain Morgan's. We were met (just as we were told) at the airport on the island by Malcolm (Maile). He made sure that we had our luggage, got us a cab and took us to the dock to wait for the rest of the arriving guests. We sat at BC's, enjoying the first drink of our vacation (on the resort). The boat ride was a great 15 minutes and the check in was handled beautifully. When we got to our cassita, we discovered that it was not what we had arranged for. Maile made sure that within a day we were moved to the one-bedroom that we expected. You cannot go there expecting lots of nightlife and excitement. It was a place for us to take walks along the beach at night, make coffee and read a book on the porch in the morning, take a kayak out to the reef or rent a bike and discover the island in the afternoon, and walk down the beach for a great dinner or a good pizza. The tours that we booked at the activities desk were great. The people who worked there were helpful and very nice. It is not the USA! that's why we went there. If you are looking for something else - go to Miami.

Simply Awful

from A TripAdvisor Member
Way overpriced, with really medicore quality. And the mosquitos are vicious so be warned! The worst part was when we got mugged while walking along the beach about 50 yards from the resort. I certainly don't fault the resort for that, but I do fault them for doing absolutly nothing to help us after the incident. With our vaction ruined, we decided to go home early and had to fight with management to refund us for the night we weren't going to be there. Stay away from this place...

kind of a dump

from A TripAdvisor Member
Don't go. Run down housing, terrible restaurant, LOTS OF MOSQUITOS! Shoddy construction which is now starting to fall apart. Ants in the rooms. Even in the dry season, my husband got 30 mosquito bites during our 2 days there--and only got 4 during our 5 days in the JUNGLE. I'd recommend Victoria House. We stayed there 2 nights, but although we booked 3 months in advance, they didn't have space for us to stay the whole time.

Pre-Honeymoon/Wedding

from Mr.Robert
We arrived San Pedro on January 3 rd, 2005. At that point we were wondering where we were and where is Captian Morgans. After 2 minuets or so a representative from Captian Morgans arrived and escorted us to our awaiting water taxi. At that point we meet Sharon Boyd and wonderful representative from Captian Morgans, a hostess type welcoming person. Who later on was my maid of honor in Our Wedding. After a wonderful boat ride to Captian Morgans, our journey awaits us. Sharon showed us around helped us checked in, and later we met for drinks. What a beautiful paradise. We had just purchased a new digial camera, I knew then I was going to use all my memory on this wonderful island much less a wedding. The next day Sharon took us to town with her boyfriend Wil and we went shopping for wedding outfits. The Wedding was to be held on Friday January 7. We took a water taxi back to San Pedro, which turned out to be a very fascinating
little town. Wedding outfits were custom made by Bonita Island Fashions, We wanted a tropical looking wedding since we were in the tropics. Back to the resort for Belizian Night, with music and wonderful food. The staff could not have been more friendly, good food, wonderful tropical atmosphere, and a new liking for rum punch, and the dirty banana. The next day we snorkeled Shark and Ray Alley, where our diver Dillson was hugging and wresteling sharks and StingRays. What an Experience! We were planning to take another Snorkel after the wedding. The next two days flew by as we talked to Blanca our wedding planner, as we got ready to be wed. On the morning of our wedding, the weather was perfect, blue skys, tropical multi layed blue waters and bright sunshine prepared us for our specail day. That morning I located the gardner and asked for his clippers, for I was going to arrange the most beautiful tropical flowers for my maid of honor, a little island flower girl and myself. The wedding was at 4:00, It was perfect.
We had rum punch, appitizers, and key lime pie as our wedding cake.
The staff at Captian Morgans could not have done enough for us. Ernie, Karen, Malli, Joe the waiter, all the Louis's, Felix, Dillson and a whole host of other could have not done anything else to make it a perfect visit and wedding and honeymoon. They even arranged a specail wedding night dinner for myself and my new husband Robert under candle lit palapa, surrounded by candles cand a special meal and a wonderul waiter Joe who we will never forget. It was hard to leave our new family, we have become so close. We exchanged e-mails with other guest and staff and plan on returning sometime later this year. We loved everything about Captian Morgans, the food, the golfcarts we took to San Pedro, the water the people and especially our new friends, who hopefully we will meet again one day.

Ice Cream Don't eat

San Pedro is awful for late night dining If you want to eat make sure you get to your restaurant by 9:00 PM. Everything closes for food by 10:00 PM except for The Park where street vendors cook up everything from steak to chicken on dirty grills with no refrigeration. I had some serious stomach issues after dining late night at the Park.
