Top Local Tips for Belize City

dangerous and nothing to do in Belize City do not wander around at night off your hotel property. Even the daytime is pretty unsafe. I do not recommend Belize at all. It is like being in Mexico (not the good part) except everything is priced like Manhattan. It is hotter than heck and pretty dumpy. Just head to Playa del Carmen, MX for a good deal and more things to do and see. Or if you want to spend alot of money, just go to the Caribbean where it isn't so third world and nicer towns, etc.

Safety in Belize City Everyone before our trip to Belize and during our trip warned us not to walk around outside the hotel after dark and I would agree. Guards are at every entrance we have seen where any tourists should be for a reason. We thought there was a pier area near our hotel (Radisson) and we were walking just a could blocks from our hotel during the day when a man and woman started harassing us to check out their flea market shops. We declined but the guy insisted on walking us over to his and while perusing items, he asked my husband if he would like anything for his head (drugs). At night, even just walking outside to cross the street to the other side of the hotel there are guards standing watch for the guests and barbed wire around part of the pool area to thwart any thieves from taking off with your stuff.

Great Base to Explore Belize Numerous people had tried to discourage me from staying in Belize City due to concerns about crime and the lack of attractions within the city itself. I stayed in the charming and very safe Fort George area of the city and had absolutely no worries about crime. Belize City is the hub for many tour operators and I was easily able to take guided day tours throughout Belize by staying in Belize City. Belize City is a convenient base from which to explore the country of Belize. The city itself is worth a tour as well.
