Top Local Tips for St. Thomas
getting around if you're going for a short trip, it's probably cheaper to just take cabs when you need to go out. the cost is generally $5/pp per way, maybe $20/pp for the airport which is a good 30 min from the hotel. the cabs are generally 14 seater vans that usually fill up before they take you to your destination. we were the first stop from the airport and the only stop going back. car rentals are approx $400 for the week and probably only worth it if you plan to leave the hotel alot.
Rent A Car But Be Careful What You Rent Renting a car- especially if you want to take a trip over to St. John's on the ferry, is a must. But note, this isn't like the continental US where the rental fleets are full of newer cars. We rented from a national chain and had a very used, older Ford Taurus. Friends didn't fair much better. A suggestion if you have a small group is to rent a Jeep - and from a local company - prices are good and they really work to gain your business. Also note that some companies restrict your ability to take your car across to St. John's so if that's important, check the terms, conditions, and restrictions. If you have needs for a larger vehicle, suggest you reserve before getting to the island.
