Historical Traveller Reviews of Carambola Beach Resort Hotel

Great potential

from westernmaine

Great staff, food a little pricy and not much selection, but being at this resort is like your own piece of heaven. The rooms need updating but they are working on them, they are very clean. It is worth the money for the ocean rooms, ask for the ones on the beach. Make sure you rent a jeep and explore the island. I would recommend this resort and the island of St. Croix it is quiet secluded and very relaxing.

Excellent Service

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a fabulous place to stay! My husband and I, along with thirty of our wedding guests, thoroughly enjoyed our week stay at Carambola. The service was impeccable and delivered with a genuine smile. The rooms were beautiful. The beachfront setting was sublime. I highly recomend it for a couple, a group of friends or family vacation.

s better than you can imagine

from MiamiBeach1
Carambola Resort is ideally located at the northwest edge of the island, right at the edge of the famed Puerto Rican trench. Shore diving is possible and snorkeling very good. The ammenities of the resort well above the best on the island, making the 45 minite trip to the best restaurants acceptable.

We moved from Coromont Resort, which was more expensive and a disasterous, dirty mess!

For Carambola, the value is excellent, location superb. I cannot think of anything bad to say. The standard rooms are huge and well-located on grassy lawns only a hundred feet from the sand.

Our little island paradise

from helby82
Our time was wonderful. The place was even more beautiful than in pictures. The bathroom was large and accomadations more than ample. Friendly people were there to serve. Our room was cleaned daily and efficiently with fresh towels and clean sheets (when requested). You can hear the waves breaking from your room. Recommend Lobster Reef (very close, right down road from resort). Cane Bay Beach Bar (also right down the road) had great bartenders and was a great experience.Rent a jeep because driving around with the top down admiring the scenery and enjoying the sun was fantastic. The facilities were wonderful, up to date, clean, and spacious with ready access to a beautiful, secure beach. Checking in and out was easy. However, food service was slow but we took into account that we were on island time. Pina coladas were the best we ever had. Hammocks were readily accessible and bountiful on the beach. Overall, it was a joyous, never-to-be-forgotten experience.

Beautiful and Relaxing!

Talk about a beautiful wedding! We got married on the beach at the resort and it was incredible. If you are thinking of getting married at Carambola, definitely do a sunset wedding with a view of the bluffs in the background, it was almost magical! The only downside of the resort is they pretty much run on island time, meaning that if you order something it could take awhile, or the prices were never the same on the drinks. However, there were thirteen of us in our group, so service anywhere could have been the same way, and breakfast does not start until 8AM, so take some snacks to store in your mini fridge. There were also alot of mix ups on rooms, rental car prices and a few other things, so the organization skills could use a little help. The rooms were great! You don't want to go there expecting a ritz-carlton, because that's not what it is, the rooms were very rustic and beautiful, they could use a few repairs, but we really liked that they had some originality in them. You definitely want to get a rental car while your down there, the resort is very secluded, and be careful because they drive on the opposite side of the road. All in all, we would definitely suggest this resort!

What a great place to just relax!

from Sue3cats
Picked the Carambola as a place to unwind for a weekend before working for several days in St. Croix. A friend and I were there 3/26 - 3/28/04 and had a wonderful time relaxing. The beach was lovely and not crowded, with trees under which to escape from the sun. There were people in swimming and surfing, but I found the surf too rough and the tide very strong, so we just waded. The pool area was pleasant and the pool water was a pleasant cool temperature. Drinking and dining on the patio above the pool was convenient and right on the beach. Our room was spacious and clean, and having the screened porch was great. And the landscaping of the resort is lovely. Driving on the left was not a problem so that we didn't mind the isolation of the resort; the roads can't be driven quickly and drivers are courteous. The drive through the rain forest at night to Fredricksted is quite an adventure (open your windows for the sounds), and also had a fun time at Off the Wall (friendly people, a jazz duo, and a home-made bundt cake just brought in to the kitchen by the baker) much closer to the hotel. It was quiet, there were no cell phones, everyone was friendly, there wasn't a lot of frantic activity, the pool was never jammed, the sun shone, the wind blew, the daquiris tasted wonderful -- what more could you want for pure relaxation. Small complaint -- telephone messages were not delivered in a very timely fashion (and some we didn't get at all).

Carambola-St. Croix

from A TripAdvisor Member
Since I used Trip Advisor to help me make my selections I thought it was only fair that I in turn offer my opinion. I have visited the Caribbean many times and St. Croix is one of the better Islands. This was my second visit to St. Croix. My first visit I rented a Villa which I think is the way to go if you are traviling with another couple/family. On this visit it was just my wife and I so it was more $ smart to stay at a resort. We stayed at the Carambola 2/16/04-2/22/04.
The beach was beautiful, the hotel staff were extremaly accomidating and hospitable. The rooms were clean and well appointeded but need some updating. This also applies to the pool area. This may be because this property has receintly changed hands and new owners have not completed their renovations. There were many workers in the process of renovating so I'm sure this issue will be resolved. The biggest complaint that I've read about this property on "Trip Advisor" is that the Carombola is that it is isolated. It is a bit away from tourist area (1/2 hr-Christiansted) but for some this is means exclusive and not isolation. The solution is to rent a car which I think is a must. You can acclimate to the driving fairly easily, just pay attention take your time and go slow. Island drivers are very courtious and are not going to honk and tailgate. The food at the Carambola was adequate. The breakfast was buffet style and had enough to satisfy most everyone and at $15.00 I thought it was a good deal. Dinner was fairly expensive, not bad but not great either. However, no one wants to eat at the same place all the time so again if you have a car there are many very good restaurants in Christiansted. One reataurant outside of Christiansted that I reccomend is "Donavans Reef", on the pricy side but very good.
Closer to the Carambola (10 min)is "Off the Wall" a beach bar with good burger/fries type food. It is a great laid back place to watch the sunset and have a few beers. Also near to the Carambola (15 min) is the Salt River Marina a good place for breakfast or lunch. Would I stay at the Carambola again? Yes.Hope this review helps

Loved Carambola

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Carambola in January, 2004, with our two daughters. We arrived late at night and, though the restaurant had closed, Steve automatically arranged for sandwiches and a fruit plate for our tired and hungry kids. Our room was absolutely beautiful, big screened porch surrounded by lush trees and privacy. Beach is beautiful, the small swimming area (with no sea urchins) is fine, but a bit far from the pool & restaurant where the kids wanted to hang out. The food was great, as was the service. They could use a bit of variety in the menu, but overall the place was fantastic. We've travelled all over the world, including the caribbean, and the Carambola far exceeded our expectations. There are a few spoiled brats who need to be catered to as if they are kings, and they might not be happy. They belong elsewhere anyway.

Beautiful but Nothing to Do

from Kalebyra
I spent a couple days here in late February of 2003. As we drove to Carambola, I thought where are we going. However, once we turned the last curve I realized it was paradise. It was the most beautiful place ever. However, there was NOTHING to do. We played ping pong, walked around the resort, ate chicken fingers, and went to I think the Divi Resort. The Divi did not have anything on Carambola's beauty, but it did have snorkeling. Which by the way, was terrible. You had to swim out about a mile and it was still not worth it. There was not alot of people at Carambola which was nice but the main resturant closed early.
So if you spent the day out in the city and came home for dinner you were left with bar food. The room was very nice though and again the grounds were BEAUTIFUL!!

Almost Paradise

from A TripAdvisor Member
From the minute we arrived, everyting was perfect. The resort was beautiful, the staff was more than accommodating, the food was delicious and the beach was secluded.

If you are looking for a very relaxing trip and just want to get away from it all, this is the place. We never left the resort. There was never a reason for us to leave because everything we needed was onsite.

Steve, the all purpose man, knew us by name and shared with us the history of the resort and dining facilities. Maggie, the front desk attendant, greeted us with a smile every morning. Each server complimented our dinner with great conversation or service.

We will definitely visit Carambola again. We have traveled all over the world and haven't found a gem like this.

Top Local Tips for Christiansted

Driving Try to avoid driving at night. Centerline Car Rental provided us with a good map, but it did not show all roads and a lot of the roads were not marked with signs. We did well driving during the day, but driving at night was an adventure. We got lost repeatedly the one night we were out after dark.

pick up brochures at the airport pick the the brochures at the airport for reviews on food, places to go, etc. www.stcroixexplorer.com has a magazine right there in the airport.

Snorkling A good time to be had snorkling with "Big Beard" service at Buck Island.
