St. John rocks!

from A TripAdvisor Member
St. John Rocks!, St. Thomas,...eh?! Spent 4 days in St. John at Caneel Bay resort and i can honestly say that it was one of the best experiences I have had in 25+ years of traveling. great secluded beaches, awsome snorkling, great service and super food. The property itself is spectacular, with on-site ruins, lush gardens and 7 of the best beaches on St. John, an Island noted for awesome beaches. Stayed 4 days at the Ritz in St. Thomas,...beautiful property as well, the absolute best service that I have ever experienced,...definitely 1st class all the way, however the beach is very mediocre, and the food was dissapointing. Agave Terrace is a wonderful experience, great original dishes, good wine selection, and if you arrive just before Susnet, breathtaking ambience. St. Thomas as a whole is ok, however when I return, I will spend my time in St. John and the BVI's

The Ritz is the best!

My husband and I just returned from a week's vacation at the Ritz Carlton and we can't wait to go back. During the entire week, we left the resort only once for a day trip to St. John. Service is better than what you can ever imagine. The beautiful rooms were average in size, but if you include the patio, the room is actually quite big. The restaurants are limited in food selection and can be expensive ($9.50 for one hot dog), but a meal in Charlotte Amelie would actually be more expensive when you include the taxi fare. We definitely recommend going to the Marina Mart in Red Hook to stock up on water, soda, etc. Why pay $2.75 for a can of soda when you can get it for less than a dollar at the Marina Mart? The ocean floor at the beach is covered in broken coral, but why swim in the ocean when the infinity pool is so lovely?
If you're going to stay on St. Thomas, stay at the Ritz Carlton.

Wonderful...Awesome

END OF AUGUST TRIP....This has to be the best resort that the wife and myself have ever stayed at. Over a 7 day stay we did not have on thing to say negative about the place. I have heard some people saying that the food and bars were expensive. Yes they are but it is the Ritz. When you pay the $10 for the frozen drink you need to keep in mind that included in that price is the service that you get. This includes the perfectly cleaned rooms and awesome grounds. Every staff member is included in that drink price with their professional attitude. The Ritz sailing trip.....well it is $150 with tip and I did not think that it was worth the money but the wife did. Just make sure that when you take the sunset cruise you have clear weather. Also a must while there...take a trip to B.V.I. on Captain Nautica advertures(worth ever penny). We have already planned our next vacation there next year. IF you have more questions you can e-mail me.

t Wait to Go Back!!!

My husband and I sepnt 4 wonderful days at the Ritz in July. We were celebrating our 20th anniversary, so we spent the extra $$ and booked a deluxe, OV room. Our room was beautiful, with a great view. We found everyone at the Ritz to be warm, friendly and very helpful. My only complaint (only one!) is that one of the three restaurants on the property was closed during our stay. The buffets offered (for dinner) at the other 2 restaurants weren't exciting and the dinner menu was limited and didn't change during our stay. We had dinner off property at the Agave Terrace--be sure to go--dinner was excellent, with a view to match!!

Wonderful experience

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in May for our honeymoon. It was a wonderful experience. We received only top notch service from everyone we encountered. From the front desk to the pool and spa staff our requests were graciously and quickly met. All the employees greeted us with a friendly hello and a smile. The room was elegant and clean with a spacious marble bathroom and large balcony. The infinity pool was beautiful and the pool attendants are there to cater to your every whim. Snag your lounge chair early..they were filled by 10 AM. The food and drinks were on the pricey side. You will pay $9.00 for a poolside drink. However we were at the Ritz in paradise on our honeymoon so who cares about the money? Enjoy!

Nice Hotel; Service is Inconsistent to Poor

from A TripAdvisor Member
Unfair to badmouth the Ritz/St. Thomas, as the hotel has excellent grounds, great pool, stellar rooms. However, what will drive a guest crazy (whether a iz traveler like me or my homemaker like my wife) is service that is inconsistent. In fact some of the hotel help ranges from helpful to bored, but mainly the facial expressions seem to -in general- say "I don't really want to be here". This theme was echoed by many of the wedding party that had the destination wedding. We had gone to Puerto Rico (Wyndam Condado) and the hotel mgmt and staff were so genuinely nice and helpful. In short not a "Ritz type service" at all (that may explain the legacy -- hotel was not built as the Ritz but as the Palazzo). Avoid if you can. - Fellow Traveler

The best on ST Thomas

from A TripAdvisor Member
Wonderful, beautiful and excellant service. Grounds were lush and impressive with a good variety of tropical and fragrant flowers. Staff was friendly and Concierge went out of her way to make reservations at Restaurants on the island. My only complaint was the food was very expensive even for the caribbean so we ate out most nights. Dining for four can get pricey. Try Duffy's Love shack and East End Cafe near the Ritz or Alexander's Cafe in Frenchtown or Herve's in town for those special nights. Our 17 yr.old and 11yr. old both like the Ritz but would have liked to have some friends around. It is a very quite resort for children not like the Westin St. John which we visited on a day trip. Kids everywhere.

Great Advice Re: Ritz Carlton St. Thomas

from A TripAdvisor Member
First, trust me and book a room in the club level building or you are going to be unhappy. The older section is just that...older! There are some great suites but you have to either book them ahead of time or ask for an upgrade when you arrive. The standard rooms you get when you book through discount web sites are not very nice and are definately not like other Ritz Carltons. The club level seems expensive but I promise you will save money in the long run. Second, a car is a very good idea, but make sure you are ready for an adventure - driving is very challenging. Use the concierge on the club floor to help plan your activities. You can email them ahead of time for reservations, ideas, etc. St. John is a great day trip - Go to Duffy's on St. John after dark but make sure you hold you nose...and don't miss the last ferry back to Red Hook. Duffy's can really smell like vomit sometimes unless there is a good breeze but is worth the stinch and is alot of fun.
Also, buy t-shirts from Duffy's - people will come up to you when you get back and tell you they have been there. Try not to compare your hotel experiences here with the Ritz Carlton to St. Thomas. People move slow...so should you on vacation. If you want faster drinks, just tell your server you want special attention and give him/her a big tip. It works every time. Forget the Ritz Carlton name, make sure you overestimate your budget, and have a great time. If you have any specific questions post a question and I will answer.

Real luxury

My husband and I stayed at the Ritz for the first three nights of our honeymoon, and we really did not want to leave it. The service was excellent. When we arrived we asked if they would upgrade our room, and they did so, happily. Our room was not in the new building, but it was gorgeous and very large. Everything was beautiful, relaxing, and we would love to go back again.
