Only regret......not staying here the WHOLE time

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had my wedding in the USVI and had my reception at Mafolie. It was above and beyond what I was expecting. Natasha and her family were EXCELLENT. My only regret for the entire time was that we didn't tell every single person that we invited to stay at the hotel. I am baffled to see that there were negative reviews about this place. We loved it. I got ready in one of the rooms with all my bridesmaids and found the rooms to be quite nice. For the price this is the best place to stay. We had people staying all over the island and everyone that stayed here was VERY happy. That is more than I can say for a lot of the other places that people stayed at. I was very leary of giving recommendations to my guests to stay somewhere that I had never been to. Boy do I wish that I had gone with my gut. Any bride considering what to do with her wedding should do this: Contact Natasha, block all the rooms that you will need at the hotel and have you reception at the restaurant. I feel as though their website does not do them justice. When we go back for an anniversary we will absolutely stay here. The Mafolie is one of my fondest memories of our wedding. Anyone that would like pictures or would like a more specific recommendation please contact me. lmorgan4523@hotmail.com

Absolutely precious!!!

from Melodyritchey
Fabulous views from room, pool and restaurant! Rooms very cozy and so comfortable and the staff extremely inviting. The decor of the room was warm and fresh.
The meal at the pool bar, yummm, fresh grilled tuna sandwich! Dinner at the restaurant, a gourmet experience, caribbean lobster, huge, delicious and more than I could eat! Very generous portions! A star lit sky, panoramic million dollar view with Andre Bocelli singing in the background and absolutely perfect weather! If you are looking for a home away from home, here is the place...have you packed your bags yet?

Exceptional Value

My wife and I hosted our daughter's wedding in STT on Jan 15,'06. A large (20) group of our guests stayed a week or more at the Mafolie. We had a ball! The staff was very courteous and the management (family owned and operated did all they could to make our stay pleasant. We spent lots of time in their pool area which overlooks Charlotte Amalie and the harbor. They shuttled us to Megans Bay beach daily. The restaurant and bar was top shelf. This hotel does not compare with Ritz Carleton or Marriott nor does it need to. It is homey and comfortable and the price is right. We'll go back!

Horrible place

from A TripAdvisor Member
This place was OLD, NASTY, and an awful place to stay. The staff was so rude and seemed as though they were missing a few marbles. The owner, Mike, was outright rude and I heard him yelling at one of the staff members like an animal just let out of his cage. Overall, it was just plain horrible.

Wonderful relaxing place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
Thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing, low-key week at the Mafolie with my wife and kids. The rooms were clean, comfortable (and air-conditioned!) and, of course, the view is just stunning (from the room, from the restaurant, from the pool). The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is truly top-notch (absolutely positively get the filet mignon!) The kids enjoyed the pool and the adults enjoyed the pool bar and we all enjoyed the grilled burgers for lunch poolside while taking in the view. Breakfast is continental and laid out at the restaurant where you can grab a table at your leisure. We also took advantage of their shuttle service to go to the beach as well as downtown shopping. The staff offered suggestions as to sites to see and activities to do on the island. The hotel is family-owned and has a very comfortable atmosphere. It truly was an enjoyable place to stay.

I would not stay there if THEY paid ME!!!!!!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My fiance and I stayed at the Mafolie Hotel for two days in July. To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. Where should I start?? The bathroom was AWFUL....TINY....HORRIBLE!!!! The room that we stayed in had a whole behind the toilet which they chose to stuff with tissue. There was NO ventilation in the room so it smelled stuffy ALL THE TIME!!!!! We chose to stick it out because we were only there for two days on buisness. The towels in the bathroom were old and dingy. The bedroom had NO carpeting and not even a throw rug. The continental breakfast was a joke. The restaurant on the other hand was very nice.... make reservations even if you are a guest at the hotel, the wait is rediculous. The bar staff was very nice and the view from the restaurant was also lovely. I would NEVER stay there again. This hotel truely needs to think about modern renovations. JUST AWFUL!!!!!
Management Response from A TripAdvisor Member
We, the owners of Mafolie Hotel, feel compelled to respond to this review. The comments made by this guest are quite puzzling and are, in our opinion, a gross misrepresentation of our property. We are a small, family-run inn. We take our guests’ comfort VERY seriously. We offer clean, comfortable accommodations, and we strive to make each guest’s stay pleasant and memorable.

With rates starting at $85 per night, the Mafolie is an extremely good value with nicely-appointed rooms and beautiful harbor views. All of our rooms are air-conditioned, and therefore are not stuffy. (On St. Thomas in July, A/C is a must!) We have recently laid new tile in all of our guest rooms. Tile is much cooler on your feet and a lot cleaner in an environment where guests often track sand into the room. Carpeting is simply not suitable for our climate.

Continental breakfast is included in our rates and served in our restaurant with a beautiful view of the harbor. Our continental breakfast is served daily 8-10:30am and consists of orange juice, gourmet coffee, tea, bagels, cream cheese, English muffins, butter, jelly, waffles and syrup, and cereal. We fail to see how any of this constitutes a “joke.”

Mafolie Restaurant is a popular restaurant. We offer great food with an amazing view. We recommend reservations, and we seat walk-in guests as soon as tables become available.

Overall, we regret that this guest did not enjoy her experience. It is a shame that she did not bother to talk to us while she was here. We would have liked to address her concerns in person.

If you want a great view, go here for dinner. Dinner was great. Our room, that is another story. No extra amenities such as Tissues, shampoo/cond., paper thin towels. my husband is 6'4" and the towel looked like a handtowel around his waist. I know it was inexpensive to other accomodations on the island but really...no tissues? We arrived around 6pm and took showers b/c we were at the beach all day. Then next morning after breakfast, I asked for more towels. Lets just say it wasn't an easy response such as "sure let me get them for you". Bring a blowdryer. Bedroom area ok. Shower......I wore my flip-flops in there. Needs repair. I was happy we were only there one night. My husband earned us a trip at a big resort on the island We arrived 2 days early on the island b/c we wanted something smaller and in Charlotte Amelie. Again, great view, have dinner there! - March 2005

Mafolie -- better than expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I just got back from a 5 day trip to St. Thomas.
We stayed at the Mafolie hotel. Not knowing what to expect since it is a smaller local hotel, we were pleasantly surprised. We were trying to budget and realized we picked the best hotel which had more than we expected. They said that our room was not one with a view, but right through the windows and when you opened the door there was the breath taking view of Charlotte Amalie and the harbor. The restaurant at this hotel is more famous -- since it has the best view on the island. We felt priveleged to be able to have this view all the time, and breakfast is served in this beautiful location as well (for free), so you feel special to be able to be in the restaurant while others have to wait for dinner. The funny thing is tour buses would even stop near the hotel for the view. Another blessing is the daily shuttle to Magens bay at 10am -- the best beach on the island. They even bring you back at 2:30pm. And, a shuttle to town at 10:30 am. This is great since some times taxis are a hassle. The charm of this hotel is also that it is owned by a family, and you can freely ask many questions about local sites. Not like a huge hotel where you get lost in the crowd. And, there is even a small pool with a pool bar which offers good priced food for lunch like burgers and such. I highly recommend this place, if not for a hotel stay at least for a meal at the restaurant with the breathtaking view. A++++++++

Mafolie is a neat place

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for 2 weeks and loved watching the cruise ships sailing into Charolotte Amalie from our window every morning. It is an older, cozy hotel, not luxurious but the staff was friendly and helpful giving us suggestions for getting around and recommending snorkel sites. We found it tough being perched at the top of the hill; we walked downtown most days and took a cab back up. They offer a shuttle service to Meagans Bay, a wonderful beach, but crowded when the cruise ships are in. We enjoyed the self-serve breakfast, in the morning sun, on the balcony each morning while planning our day and the pool-side lunch was always delicious, often with iguanas observing.

Great View, Great Value, Attentive and kind to families

from Queens Village NY traveler
My wife, myself and 2 children (ages 4 and 8 at the time) stayed at the Mafolie in July 2001 and were very pleased. We had spent a week on St. John and rented a car for our 4 day stay on St. Thomas so we could go to Sapphire Beach (great view of St. Johns) and Coki Beach (great snorkeling at both) and the famous Magens Bay while seeing the whole island. Mafolie is centrally located, has a wonderful view, a terrific restauraunt (Lindy's), and fine pool and deck with that same view. The value for St. Thomas was good, with a more than adequate continental breakfast and extremely helpful and friendly staff that really made us (and our kids) feel welcome. The fridge in the room was a plus. You are very close to mountain top, Drakes Seat (same view as Mountain Top Shopping area) and Magens Bay. Coki Beach aquarium is a must as is strolling Charlotte Amalie. Everyone told us to go on a day when only 1 or 2 Cruise ships were in port-you could see them frm the room or pool. This way, the shops (90% are jewlery) are open but it is easy strolling-these buildings are converted warehouses, over a hundred years old. If there are 5 or more mega ships in port-the consensus is to go to St. Johns as the shopping areas are packed. We found it a good idea to leave when the shops close as a very seedy element begin to appear. Be sure to go to French Town for a leisurely stroll by the fishing boat docks and enjoy any of the gourmet Restauraunts there. (we ate at Chickies Place-excellent!!! (as recomended by the hotel-but they said all the eateries in F.T. were good. Do not expect to see great views as you drive around St. Thomas. Unlike St. John, all the big hotels lie on the best beaches. The view is great from the St. John to St. Thomas ferry-very reiable and not that expensive. Mountain Top has a large platform where you can see Magens Bay and all the Virgin Islands (except Anegeda and St. Croix-the latter which can be seen on a clear day from the Mafolie)-all the way to Virgin Gorda. Arrive at Coki Point early to snorkel as it is a favorite beach of both locals and tourists and don't be afraid to pick the brains of the innkeepers-they are genuinely nice folks who love to help and have a great knowledge of the island. Even if you do not stay here, the restauraunt and view at the bar with a few drinks make stopping here worthwhile. One last thought: I met a man at the bar who lived on St. Thomas for many years. He told me his house is too small to accomodate guests, but when family wants to visit, he has them stay at the Mafolie for the good value and the knowledge that they will be taken care of. What else can I say?

Top Local Tips for Charlotte Amalie

Greetings Just one thing that I totally notice made a difference when dealing with people was the greeting I used. I read about it online, and it is true. "Hi" and "hello" don't have the same meaning as a greeting there. Instead, one should say "Good morning" or "good evening" followed by "How are you?"

Submarine Do go on the 2 hour Atlantis Underwater Submarine excursion Do take the Skyride to Paradise Point

Stay away from Charlotte Amalie on cruise ship days! You can't even get around walking in town, let alone driving, when there is more than one ship in town. Seriously, wait for the days when there are no ships. St. John is not to be missed. In fact, skip St. Thomas altogether and head for the peace and serenity of St. John and Coral Bay!
