Top Local Tips for Charlotte Amalie
Getting Around St. Thomas Highly recommend renting a car so you have the freedom to get around St.Thomas and visit St. John for sure. Some of the best beaches are actually on St.John.
Renting a car not all it's cracked up to be I read the debate about renting a car in STT ("it's worth it because taxis are so exp", "driving on the wrong side of the road is easy to get used to", etc.) and from what I'd read, it sounded like things would be pretty easy to find. Wrong. I consider myself an excellent map reader, but the roads were hard to navigate (few road signs, names change mid-road, or veer off in strange directions), getting places without explicit directions was difficult, and turning around (especially on the wrong side of the road) is not easy. Driving on the wrong side of the road wasn't that bad after you got used to it. But the one part that I didn't consider was that when driving, you can't (or shouldn't!) drink at dinner, on beaches, on boat trips, etc. Taxis were pricey, but so was paying $10 for parking in RH, $2 at the beach, etc. For 2 people, it definitely wasn’t worth the price. While it was nice to have a car to stash your stuff at the beach, in the end, we wished we hadn't rented one.
Local Bars, Clubs & Dining There are 3 very close places to eat right near the villa. Fungi's which we had tons of fun at is actually a walk down the beach, right above that on the hill is the Agava Terrace which offers fine dining. Both of these are in waliking distance right on the property. Ramono's is a $2.00 Taxi ride or 3 min drive if you rent a car. Then there was Redhook where we spent many nights. There is a whole collection of island bars from mild to wild. Duffy's Love Shack was our favorite as it was great place to unwind & the selection of island drinks was endless. There are many other places to eat that we went to as well all over the island.
