Loved Fort Recovery
from A TripAdvisor MemberMy husband and I were married in June on the beach at Fort Recovery, and stayed there for a week. (We purchased the honeymoon package.) Our wedding was exactly what we wanted, hassle-free, very private and georgeous on the beach at sunset. After the wedding we had a private meal and bottle of champagne served in our room, and spent the rest of the night sitting on the beach. If you're looking for a wedding like this, Fort Recovery is a perfect place.
Pamelah, the manager at Ft. Recovery, was great. She helped us with all the paperwork and planning for the wedding. She was almost always in the office, and helped us immediately whenever we needed it.
In fact, before we even arrived she booked the florist and the registrar. She was even a witness at the wedding!
The three dinners that came with the package were wonderful (especially the jerked chicken and pumpkin soup), and I don't think we've ever had a nicer waiter!
The snorkeling trip was amazing, and was our favorite part of the vacation. We definetly recommend planning additional days of snorkeling. When we were there Pamelah helped some other guests plan an extra day trip.
The view from the balcony was wonderful (Its definetely worth it to pay extra and get a penthouse room.) The villas are small and quaint. You feel like you're really part of the island, rather than a tourist staying in a super-sized hotel!
Tortola is an amazing island--the beaches are beautiful and road town has some excellent restraunts--so you definetely need to rent a jeep if you want to explore.
We can't wait to visit Ft. Recovery and Tortola again!
Luckily I left within 3 hours of being there
from A TripAdvisor MemberNow for the killer and the reason for my review being as bad as can be. Upon arrival Pamelah had me sign a credit card slip for U$1775 without even looking inside the room. This was after a U$400 dollar deposit prior to arrival. In every hotel I have ever been before and after, I have never signed a credit card slip with a written amount on it. All they usually do is place an authorization on your account. After seeing our accommodations and realizing we were misled and how this business misrepresented itself, we decided to leave. Pamelah and Anita were very resistant and shady during our heated argument over MY money. We gave them solid reasons for not wanting to stay and they refused to accept them. I offered to pay for the first night as it is customary and I even offered to let them keep the 400 dollar deposit. They rudely refused and told me to take it up with my credit card company. This was the worst experience I have ever had traveling anywhere and it put a very sour spin on the start of our honeymoon. Fortunately, the money has been credited back to us and we came across the most amazing place on the island called Long Bay Beach Resort. We spent our entire honeymoon there and had an amazing time. I highly recommend their facility. Oh, and if by the way Anita tries to tell you Long Bay can be blacked out for days if there is any power loss, she is lying. They have a generator. In fact, we were there for two large power outages on the west end of the island and Fort Recovery was dark when we drove by on our way to our air conditioned room and luke warm Jacuzzi tub.
Most people that stay here say our website does not do the place justice. This “small apartment”, as our couple suggests consists of a balcony, living room, fully equipped kitchen, (full stove, refrigerator, sink, cabinets, etc.) and a lovely bedroom. As far as the twin beds pushed together – this is a normal procedure in hotels. We did offer to move them to a King size bed and a much larger spectacular house, but they did not want to pay the price of that. I suggest price might have been the issue. The hotel they opted for was giving “bargain” prices for that week – however, by the ratings of their choice (including Fodor’s and AAA), the place they stayed at does not meet acceptable standards.
There are three dinners each in the package served to the privacy of their villa. It is available five nights during some of the summer months. We never had complaints with this arrangement. They are simply not telling the truth about a number of things. They were never told to get their own breakfast. Our brochure and our concierge clearly state that there is a tray in their room for their convenience if they would like to bring their selected breakfast items to their villa with more ease.
Let us talk about the toilet that ‘didn’t work’ – There was a ten minute problem with the water supply when an animal accidentally pulled out the plug leading to the pump. These things happen all the time to all people in all places. Fort Recovery also has a generator and within 45 seconds of any power, outage the entire resort is fully powered air conditioners and all. When they complained that they we did not supply soap they could have checked because our soap comes not only in bars but also in bottles. They are right about not having shampoo – we found out that most guests were not using “hotel” shampoo but using there own or coming into our beauty salon.
The ‘killer’ event of signing in upon arrival is also a normal practice – just for the reason of people complaining, finding cheaper places, and leaving. May I add that upon inspection of all the places on Tortola, The Travel Channel chose Fort Recovery Beachfront Villas as the ideal place – most charming, and well maintained., The villas are adorned with original oil paintings, a small library of best selling books and a unique collection of object d’arts throughout.
Tortola- a fabulous place!

from A TripAdvisor MemberThe accomodation was clean and the maid service good and unobtrusive. The caribbean trade winds aired the rooms. There was no glass on the windows since there were screens and shutters instead. The A/C units were in the bedrooms only. We were on the second floor and hoped the wood floors and no glass did not make it noisy for those below.
The circular road around Tortola runs behind Fort Recovery grounds. It was not a problem for us.
Our 7 night package included a boat trip and one dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the boat trip and the simple 3 course meal was presented very nicely in our room and was hot.
Really our only disappointment was the continental breakfast. More variety would have been appreciated.
When we needed assistance it was given promptly but equally important for us we were left alone to just relax.
A jeep for the duration of our stay was essential.
Fort Recovery lived up to our expectations for this vacation. A chance to recharge our batteries, a no hassle, quiet, relaxing, family beach vacation on a laid back island in clean unpretentious surroundings.
Honeymoon in Paradise......
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe drove the shoreline to arrive at Fort Recovery 45 minutes later and were amazed at the beauty of it. I am NOT easily pleased when I travel....I want to be able to feel I am getting my money's worth. I was NOT disappointed.
Our villa was oceanside on a very private beach and all of the guests were very, very friendly. The employees were very kind and I was very pleased with how clean and efficient everything was run.
The first night we dined in and both my husband and I had one of the best meals we have ever eaten. Again, our 3rd night we dined in our room and the food was outstanding. Our waiter was so friendly and very accomodating. The food was INCREDIBLE!
From the moment I contacted Pamelah to begin our arrangements for our honeymoon, I was very impressed. She kept in contact every step of the way and always returned my calls or emails promptly. She was very attentive and took care of us without fail. I came to feel like family in our 7 days at Fort Recovery.
I have to compliment our "captain" as well...Collin. He was soooo much fun on our day trip. He was full of wonderful information and very kind. Even when we delayed our return for just 'one more jump' off the Willy T!! :o)
Overall, my husband and I were very, very impressed. Even though we were here during the "off season". It was amazing. It was intimate and private and just what we had in mind for the perfect honeymoon spot! We will DEFINITELY return...the sooner the better!!
**I must make comment to those who have rated Fort Recovery with 2 stars.
If what you are looking for is a resort that offers huge sterile rooms with jacuzzi tubs, wall to wall carpeting and elevators, you might want to consider vacationing in a more "commercialized" location. The beauty of visiting Fort Recovery is that it is "real and unspoiled" beauty...where you meet REAL people who are interested in who you are and what you have to say. Fort Recovery is our own little slice of paradise and I will gladly recommend it to anyone and everyone who visits Tortola.

from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Tortola
Mainstreet and the waterfront Mainstreet is very enjoyable to explore, with many interesting shops and gallaries. Also, it's not obvious at first, but you can way around the whole waterfront right on the water--great views of the water, the mountains, and all the harbor activity. I think Roadtown must have been impoved alot since a lot of the previous reviews were written. I found it a very attractive town. Great ice cream at La Dolce Vita.
Best Beach to Relax and Swim Must go to Smugglers Cove....is is heaven. There is small dirt road to get there, but keep on it and you will reach that picture perfct Carribbean beach with shades of aqua water. There is a rustic beach bar and food, but it's nothing fancy. This beach is not over commercialized and feels great. There is one stand with necklaces and t-shirts, but that's it. Bring your snorkel gear...great area to the left of the beach with lots of fish. There were some children there and it has nice shallow water that is tranquil. Excellent for swimming. We didn't want to leave. Warning: Do not take the private dirt road that goes uphill when you leave. We got stuck on this terrible road and had to get a tow. If it had been later in the day, we may have really been stuck overnight. Just take the road that goes back by Long Bay bach and you will be fine. Also, go early and wear sun screen!
My suggestion if you're staying more than 3days Have a rental car, the taxi prices are incredibly high. You'll end up spending less on a rental car in 3 days than riding around in a taxi, especially if you plan on actually going places.
