Well, to keep it short we were very dissapointed by th Hilton. We origanally booked to stay at le grand courlan but canx after reading bad reviews. As this was our honeymoon we didnt want to take the risk of any problems & rebooked in the Hilton. The hotel itself is very nice, the food is very good especially in the coco reef restaurant and the rooms are fab BUT the staff are mostly rude, lazy & unfriendly who dont seem to have any idea of the procedures. We had also paid to go all-inclusive which there was confusion about & issues over which drinks were included (no brands even tho it said so on the forms). We were told the tennis was not inc when it was just not the hire of the rackets&balls & we hired a car through the hotel and they wouldnt let us leave the keys with them the next day for collection saying it was nothing to do with them*~?)}
The hotel is also on the Atlantic side so is very windy and the beach is dirty. This is also something we were not aware of.
I think overall the Hilton is over priced and not worthy of 5 * especially as we stayed in a 3* in grenada the week before which was great.
p.s If you are going to the Hilton then the only good staff members are Hilda who is lovely & and aisha in the a la carte restaurant.

Not at all impressed.

When our plane was grounded for the return journey home there was a huge cheer around the departure lounge. The announcment was then made that we were all being sent to local hotels, getting better and better!!! No not really. We were sent to the Hilton Tobago.
Staff on reception were pleasant but the rest of them were surly. The food on our arrival were what was left and really eft overs. They did try to address the issue by making sandwiches only then to go on to spoil the attempts at customer service by asking us to sign for a "two course meals". Must have slept through that meal. None of the complaints initially were met with any interest (usually the memeber of staff would walk off without even acknowledging you had even spoken. ). Certainly not until they were faced with fairly large group were the complaints taken on board and finally addressed.
Breakfast and lunch were excellent but restaurant and bar staff remained a miserable bunch throughout. I wish we had been sent back to our original resport where staf were were lovely.
The rooms were beautiful, as is the location, but we were put in a room with a long, long walk to the reception and restaurant. The hotel itself is a good distance from the resort entrance let alone the island itself. Certainly no danger of encountering local beach vendors here. Some may find that reassuring.
We understand this it is their quiet time, staff numbers were cut in half (actually Chef had gone home) so they were finding it difficult to cope with the sudden arrival of a load of unexpected guests. But I am reviewing a hotel that has a five star rating. Yes, the 5 star rating is deserved for fabric and the rooms are indeed lovely as is the location. But for customer services and manners I am reviewing with a a big fat zero.
At least it didnt cost me personally to stay here, one night would have been enough. I am left wondering that if maybe if we were "the paying customer" (and not the guest of an airline, getting a freebie) attitudes may have been different and we may have enjoyed some level of customer service. However this was our experience of this hotel yours maybe different.
We will return to Tobago next year but it will not be staying at the Hilton Tobago. Sorry.

A well balanced offering

Once again we have been to the Hilton and once again we are booked to return this summer. With 8 children travelling can be very stressful and that is why I tend to spend a lot of time researching matters before I go anywhere and why we do revisit good places several times while sampling new destinations when we can.
Each time we have been to the Hilton it has exceeded all expectations. What it is not and what the Caribbean is not in general is a rushed hustle of service so if that is what you are looking for not only is the Hilton the worng place but Tobago would be the wrong place. If, however, like my family and I you are looking for somewhere with friendly staff, a slow relaxing pace, great food and great facilities then the Hilton is where it is at.
While it appears expensive I find that the overall stay works out to be a reasonable price if you include everything that you get. The worst thing about going to the Tobago Hilton is having to leave to come home. First time we went for 8 days, too short, the next time 12 days, too short and this time we are booked for 14. Maybe we will just keep going for longer and longer till we get to the point where we want to leave, but I guess I'd probably never get back to work then.
My final piece of advice is get on a plane and spend some time at a totally relaxed, superb hotel.

Great hotel, away from the main tourist areas
from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at the Hilton Tobago over Easter 2004. The hotel has good facilities with several restaurants, bars, three swimming pools and well equiped gym. There's an excellent scuba diving centre (World of Watersports) on site which lends hotel guests some watersports stuff as boogie boards for free. Hotel is on a small rocky outcrop between two great beaches. Staff are really good and friendly.
Note that the hotel is a few miles away from the main tourist areas, so you'll need to hire a car or depend on the (reasonably cheap) taxis to get away.

Too bad the cover did not math the book!
from A TripAdvisor Member
It's too bad the Cover was not as good as the book. This is the first time in my life that I was at such a beautiful hotel. It's too bad that the staff and service were not as awsome. The best thing at that place was the greating from Ingrid and the Bell Hop boys. The rest of the staff there made my family and I feel very uncomfortable in the dinig locations, bar areas and the swim locations. Many a times we were paced by, by the staff so that they could service persons who they believed in their eyes where not locals. My wife and I are both of Indo Trinidadian decent and we felt the prjudice write from the word go. On the first night we were told from one of the ladies working the check in desk (Dawn-Marie) that the Robinson Caruso Pub had a cover charge when we were walking in to check it out. It was not until she realized that I did not have a local accent and that in fact we were guests of the Hotel that she advised me that it was free to get in. We then went over to the Upstairs Plantations bar for a quick drink before our ride picked us up for dinner. We only sat there for about 20minutes before on of the service staff, after service about 6 different persons from U.S., Britian and Germany did they come over and ask us if we need a drink. The Saga continued the same night on our return. The air conditioning in our room was not working properly and the fan was broken so you imagine how well we slept. Not knowing whats on the outside we did not want to leave our patio door open. This problem was noticed when we first checked in and was supposed to be fixed by the time we returned from diner. My complaints the next day obviously fell on deaf ears because it was not on the the Monday that we were leaving (Fri. check-in) did they send someone to fix the unit. Mind you the fan was fixed the next day so we had that on all the time with the fan from the air conditioning running. This story can continue and I could probably write a book about this experiece. One should not the the Property is absolutely beautiful, too bad the staff did not treat all guests equally.

Loved the Hilton
from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and i have just returned from a two week holiday at the Hilton hotel Tobago (17 feb 04). The service we received was faultless, the staff were friendly and wellcoming. We opted for the all inclusive basis, and can really recomend this for value for money, as meals and drinks can be expensive. While we were there the staff in the coral reef restraunt found out it was my birthday , and surprised me with a birthday cake. On arrival it was most wellcome to be given a iced fruit punch and cool face towel while checking in. It was quite breezy, but wellcome from the heat. Sadly the entertainment was lacking, but i think they are working on it. I would recomend to hire a car to see some of the island which is beautiful. All in all a very enjoyable, relaxing holiday and can recomend the Hilton.
New Year
from Jean Morris
We spent Christmas and New Year at the Hilton Tobago and had a wonderful time. We like to relax over Christmas and hadn t planned to hire a car so we did spend most of the time at the hotel. We were a little concerned about eating at the hotel every night but the food was excellent. The Coral Reef Restaurant was great, we ate there on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Eve, each with a special dinner menu. We also ate there on another evening and had the normal menu. The Plantation Room had a choice of a la carte or buffet each night, most nights the buffet had a theme (Italian, Mediterranean, etc). The pool area was good and it was fairly easy to get a lounger, though I m not sure what would happen when the hotel is fully occupied. We were pleasantly surprised that it wasn t very windy as other visitors had found, I guess we were lucky. We had a gentle breeze all the time we were there and it was so hot we really needed that! The only downside to the hotel was the rooms, which were pretty basic. The room we were in smelt very musty and damp when we first arrived, this seemed to disappear after a few days so maybe the room hadn t been used for a while. We had two separate thefts while we were there. We had a CD player, cassette player and Gameboy (all in a case) stolen from our bag round one of the satellite pools. We had left them there while we went to the bar and when we came back it was really quiet as everybody else had gone, and the items were missing. I know it was our own fault for leaving them but we didn t expect that. Also we had a ring and necklace stolen from our room (I d taken them off to avoid getting suntan lotion on them and hadn t put them in the safe, thought they were well hidden). However, we didn't let this spoil our holiday.
Paradise in Paradise

My wife and I chose the Tobago Hilton as the sight for our island wedding last year and were thoroughly impressed with the friendliness of staff and quality of service. We were treated like a king and queen every day, and simply cannot wait to return to this island paradise.
Among our finest memories are those of rose petals strewn around our room, and having their finest restaurant opened just for us on our wedding night (the day that they were scheduled to be closed). We enjoyed the beautiful grounds, wonderfully relaxing pool (with swim-up bar), great tennis courts, and the warm smiles of the staff. Simply wonderful. Anyone looking for the perfect wedding getaway would be wise to let Jennylynn plan your special day!!

Tobago- Hilton and vacation December 2003
from First_Wandering_Brit
We stayed 10 days at the Tobago Hilton around Christmas 2003. We took a golf package. The course is very good and not busy (except first thing in the morning). Rooms were good- good facilities and well maintained and clean. The setting is wonderful and the sea as warm as on the Carribbean side of the island. Staff were helpful and service was very good.We agree with other commentators that the evening meal options are relatively limited in quality and quite expensive (we took the breakfast plan rather than an all-inclusive meal option). But breakfast is good value and lunch at the golf club is excellent and open to non golfers who can get a shuttle to the club house).Like other reviewers we hired a car and ate at local restaurants in the evening. There are many excellent local restaurants within 10 minutes drive of the hotel. There is also a lot to do on Tobago. (Reviewers who suggest otherwise are just plain wrong). As well as many superb beaches (Hilton run a free shuttle to Pigeon Point which is spectacular; we drove to a number of others on the Island as good or better; none were very busy over Christmas) there is a stunning rainforest with knowledgeable local guides, and amazing reef snorkelling and scuba diving. Birdwatchers will be in their element. We did not want just to lie on the beach or by the pool all the time so we are not the best commentators on the Hilton as a resort destination where you never leave the resort. So to us it seems that the key to getting a lot out of Tobago is to use the Hilton as a well resourced base but not to tie yourselves to it- there is a lot to do elsewhere on the island and you can do it pretty economically by using local car hire and tour/excursion companies.
