Very basic

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayted at this hotel from 22 December till 6 January and it felt like a month. We found this hotel very quiet and basic, with only one restaurant, one pool bar and one swimming pool. The pool bar closed at 11.30 so there was nothing to do or go to after that unless you had gone out for the evening. Our compliments go to the chef who laid on a fantastic menu. New Years eve was the best I have ever seen, unfortunately the heavens opened and the food had to be rushed inside, but was still as delicious. If you need a trip round the island ask for Doyle, a taxi driver - he will take you everywhere. Some of the staff never cracked their faces with a smile, which was a shame.

Relaxing break

We have just returned from a weeks stay in the Rex Turtle Beach and have had a wonderful time. The food is excellent and varied (the spread on New Years Eve was magnificant), staff are both efficient and friendly. The new pool has a bar and is large and attractive and while we were there, almost empty. It is great to be able to mingle with locals on the un crowded beach and to watch pelicans dive for fish in the mornings. We fed a variety of tropical birds on our balcony and felt that the hotel was part of Tobago and not an isolated retreat. The gardens have been newly planted and when established (quite soon in the climate) will be beautiful. While there we were taken out to the rainforest and along the coast by Ali Baba's Tours whose love of the island was contagious! Gaston shared his considerable knowledge of the wildlife in the forest and Ali Baba took us to Mangroves, Buucco Reef and the Nylon pool...both took their time and did everything they could to make our days special. The only disadvantage is that the sea in front of the hotel can be very rough on odd windy days, but the new pool compensates for that.

Worth every penny

We visited the week the hotel closed for refurbishment. Yes, the hotel looked tired and a new, larger pool with a sun terrace was overdue.
However, we found even with the dwindling numbers of quests, staff were courteous and friendly. The food was pretty good; lets not forget this is only a three star and we had brilliant value for money. The rooms are basic but spacious and very clean with a fantastic sea view. Are only criticism would be the persistance of the beach traders who were allowed to persue us from the public beach onto the hotel premises.

A relaxing Caribbean break

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a lovely week here last September. Hotel is on a nice beach although its very dark sand. While you're there make sure you visit the beach at Englishman's Bay - it's one of the most stunning in the Caribbean, real Robinson Crusoe and usually deserted. Ask the 'Tuna Man' who operates a boat from the beach to take you there and the Nylon Pool. He was so kind, helpful and informative, even assisting my Mother in law from the boat each time we stopped! The hotel was a little dated but very clean and friendly. We were on the all inclusive plan and the food was excellent, breakfast to set you up for the day, a varied buffet lunch and then a good choice for dinner. Also we had PREMIUM brand spirits which certainly makes all the difference. As other people have commented, YOU need to smile at people for them to smile back sometimes! Respect goes a long way. We'll certainly be back to this hotel again soon, great value, thanks Rex.

Never Again

from A TripAdvisor Member
Where do I begin? The rooms were dated, basic and required the noisy air conditioning unit to run continuously just to exist. We spent far too much time in this room as the dining areas and lounges were baking hot. The food was re-conditioned rubbish; the carvery and breakfasts being the saving grace. The staff were surly. We took one look at the pool and stayed away. The loungers were indeed mostly broken. We found the beach traders VERY intrusive and annoying. Evening entertainers were certainly not! The sea was choppy so generally couldn't even wade.
My partner enjoyed the birdlife. But, all in all we'd had enough by the end of the week! And would never book a long haul charter again. This was supposed to be a birthday treat - wish I'd gone elsewhere!

Refurb long overdue!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having spent the first two weeks of October 2003 here, if you have not booked yet avoid it until next year! The hotel is having minor work done in Nov 03 to get through the winter, before closing in May 04 for a much needed major refurbishment. On the plus side it is in a great location but here the pluses end. The staff are surly the rooms are clean but basic and in need of modernisation, the air con units work but you cant sleep with them on due to the noise, a shower came off the wall almost scalding another guest while we were there, our toilet did not flush properly, my partner had a spring from the matress stick into her the pool is filthy and miniscule and the waterski-ing wont happen, the boat has been broken for 2 years!

Engine Bob- The Rasta

from A TripAdvisor Member
Had a wonderfull holiday in September 03. Met some wonderfull local people. Don't forget to visit Engine Bob on the beach, he has a shop at the end of the beach selling local carvings. If you see him let him know Physco was asking about him. The hotel staff were not very helpfull, but the doorman Gerry was a really nice and friendly guy. Hotel very dated and needs upgrading, which is happening at the end of October for 8 weeks. Doing up the pool and bar areas. This should make a big difference.Physco

Rex Turtle Beach-So Sad To Leave

from A TripAdvisor Member
As the title suggests myself and my family where so sad to leave this little bit of paradise on earth. The hotel itself was very clean and tidy, staff incredibly friendly and helpfull and overall the food was excellent. The beach location could not be beaten only 10 metres from the hotel room.Local beach traders friendly not pushy, hand made leather sandels by Henry, the women in the group pampered by Rachel nails etc. For local trips etc we used Frankies Tours, very enjoyable days out.

Not up to standard

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and i have just returned from this hotel and found the place run down and the staff most unhelpful. The pool is definately worth a miss the beach is very nice but 50% of the sunbeds were broken and the tables under the parasoles on the beach are in bad decay.chicken & fish are in menu every day.Locals coming in to the bar of an evening and getting served first. On the good side very clean rooms and lovely gardens.

Tobago - unspoilt but for how long?

from A TripAdvisor Member
We too stayed at the Rex in August 2003. Yes, the pool is small but the Caribbean is on the doorstep! If you want a big pool, lots of activities for children and English food go to Spain! The food was very good, not all curry and creole, with plenty of fruit, salads and fish.
The desserts did not linger for days - the brits scoffed them as soon as they were put out! The highlight of my holiday was riding along Turtle beach and swimming with the horses from Looking Out stables.
Some people will whinge about anything and everything - we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would go back again!

Top Local Tips for Scarborough

Not a beach for young children ! Undercurrent quite strong oin sea - whipped my legs away and crashed me into sand on on day - wouldn't recommend for young children, but pool ok - no lifeguard anywhere, so be sure when you swim. Pigeon Point (taxi-ride away) in much safer - walk out for ages and only get to mid-chest at most.

Barter If you book a taxi from the hotl you will on average spend 60% more than if you walk 100 hundred yards up the road and hail one (all the registrations begin with a 'H')

tour to no mans land w/ barbeque Definitely do the tour to no mans land which includes the nylon pool and a barbeque. Visit the restaurant at the airport. Visit Fort George.
