Top Local Tips for Port of Spain

Irie Bites Jamaican Food Go to Ariapita Street (about a 10 minute walk from "Movie Town") to a place called Irie Bites (it has Rasta colors & a big sign- you can't miss it!). The Jerk Chicken with fries and macaroni is excellent, a large portion, and reasonably priced (about $6 US).

Beach hotels There are no major chain hotels/B&B's at the few beach towns on north & NE coast of the island (NO beaches AT ALL in POS), but there are a handful of nice-looking smaller places on the coasts if you research in advance. (The Rough Guide to Trinidad & Tobago is an excellent resource.) The only swimmable beaches are Las Cuevas & Grande Riviere because other pretty beaches have much current and/or undertow most of the year. Both towns mentioned have a few nice hotels, but the trip from airport will be long & bumpy. Probably the best hotel on the entire coast is Salybia Nature Resort & Spa at Salybia; however, there is NO BEACH, but great ocean views. If all you want to do is relax in a more primitive beach setting, try Le Grande Almandier or Mt. Plaisir Estate at Grande Riviere, both right on the beach. If you want to snorkel, you have to go to Tobago, altho Buccoo Reef can get very rough on a normal day & make for very unpleasant snorkel conditions.
