Knowing Now What I Didn't Know Before My Trip, Don't Rent a Car I was in Orient Bay June 24 through 1 July, and the traffic problems on St. Maarten/St. Martin are so bad, the parking so scarce, and the drivers so rude, I would advise you not to rent a car, but rely on a taxi, especially one you can rent by the hour rather than just a trip. The island is small, but it took me 50 minutes to drive from Orient Bay back to the airport, which I think is only 15 miles! Gas was 0,80 Euros per liter and the car only US$ 248 for one week. But as little as I drove, I should have used a taxi. I actually decided not to attend an excursion because when I went to a sail, I spent 40 minutes trying to find parking! There are no street lights, no traffic cops, and when side street traffic feeds into the main road, all traffic on the main road stops!
