Terrible Resort, Incredible Island

We stayed 7 nights and found the Resort to be adequate at best. The front counter staff were rude and abrupt right from the get go. No screens on the sliding door, needless to say caused numerous bugs to enter the room in the fraction of a second that the door was open. Air conditioner was leaking, fixed, and then began leaking again the next day. The pictures, description and overall raitings are greatly exaturated. All the descriptions mention a "kithenette" in each room, I guess our room was the exception. Had to call the front desk on the second day because room service neglected to clean our room, provide fresh towels, sweep the floor...THE BASICS!!! Cable TV...2 chanels controlled by the front desk...the rest of the chanels are about the resort. I could go on but it doesn't get any better. THE ISLAND WAS INCREDIBLE!!! THE RESORT THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE!!! I read other horror stories but didn't believe the hype, my bad. Should have listened to the warnings!!! I will definitley go back to St. Martin but steer clear of the Mercure Simson Resort!!!
P.S. Keep in mind this is a lagoon resort...once you visit the beaches you won't even go in the water at the resort, I didn't see one person in the water there over the 7 nights that I was there.

We are really sorry to hear that your week at the Mercure Simson Beach Hotel was that unpleasant. Since January 2005, the ownership changed and a new management team took over. By April 2005, we were able to improve many things but not all. We agree with some of your complaints such as the screens even if in Europe they are not used, the AC leaking (they will be completely changed by 2006). We hired new competent staff for the season and we believe that our service will be excellent and very customer oriented...

As for our beach lagoon, our clients usually appreciate our quiet beach. We will probably organize a shuttle for beach lovers next year.

We would like to know from which TOUR OPERATOR you booked your trip in order to verify the pictures you say greatly exagerated.

Quality and great value! Our stay at the Mercure Simson was delightful and we are already planning to come back! The beach was relaxing and exclusive. This hotel probably has the best location and the lagoon is stunning. Our room was very big, bright and comfortable. We have had a wonderful time with the new management and the staff were pleasant and courteous. My boyfriend and I experienced this unforgettable sunset on a catamaran on our way back from Anguilla. Every day, the hotel would have suggestions of activities, jetski was one of many. This is the best value hotel you can get on the island!

Great location, great food

We just returned from an all inclusive week at the Mercure. We were worried about the place as some of the reviews we read here were pretty negative. The worry was for nothing- it was a great place for a wonderful week of no worries, great food, great weather, and meeting lots of nice people.
Although it is a three star resort, and the bulidings are not fancy or in the best of repair, the rooms are very large, with wonderful balconies, comfortable beds, and are clean. The cleaning staff were outstanding...consistent and thorough. Front desk staff were also very nice, though occasionally too busy. Speaking french is an asset, but certainly not essential. Serving staff at the restaurant/bar were fabulous. The food was absolutely great. Like eating in a fine French restaurant for every meal. Breakfast buffet, and choice of two entree's for lunch, choice of two appetizers and two entrees for dinner. Not a lot of choices, but every choice was so good, that my family of five were constantly ordering both things and sharing. A Friday night seafood buffet and Sunday lunch BBQ buffet were also very good.
Lagoon side beach is very nice...lots of shade and quiet. Baie Rouge, the closest ocean beach is a 15 minute walk, and a gorgeous beach.
Activities at the resort were fun...beach volleyball, aqua-fit in the pool, and music, dancing, Kareoke, etc.. at night.
St martin is a great island..and pretty safe for the Carribbean. And the French atmosphere was great. Like a mini trip to France.
Our Air Transat package was a great deal, with the amazing food and drinks included...paying separately for this food on this island would have cost us a fortune (at least $500 Cdn daily for our family of five).
I will return again as soon as I can!

Great place, great holiday!

My wife and I spent two great weeks at Mercure Simson and had a great time. The room was large, clean and had a king size bed in it. The cleaning staff did their job daily and did it well. Our room had a deck looking out on the grounds and the lagoon. We were there in the first two weeks of March and the air was so warm we could enjoy being outside late in the night. The water was fun to be in, both the pool and the open water. We did some snorkelling but would like to do more, some areas are better than others. Isle Pinel has some good areas. Take it easy in the mid-day sun as it can burn rather quickly.
I understand the place was run down but there is a new owner and there are things already done to update and improve with more plans for additional upgrading.
From here at Mercure we were able to walk into Mercure or catch a bus that passes fequently, just flag it down with a wave of the hand. We travelled by bus to Phillipsburg several times and took it from Orient beach back to the resort.
The staff were friendly. Some of them were French only but tried to be helpful. A few were fluent in English which made it good for us as we are English only and that is not by choice but by circumstances. Especially helpful were Linda, Philip and Patris, they were super and helped to make our day.
For anyone wanting a great place to stay with a very nice beach and lovely surroundings - flowers, palm trees, sandy beach, manicured grounds AND a super pool this is it. It is ideal for anyone from children to senior seniors, all who want to can enjoy. Keep in mind that if you want to find things wrong you can - anywhere and some people prefer that way. I find that with a positive attitude there is always something good everywhere and this place has so many good things - I'm sure you will have a wonderful holiday.

I really recommend the Mercure Hotel of St Martin to all trip advisor readers. The hotel is very quiet, the beach is very private and the service really good. The new familiar management has been taking personally care of my staying and I really felt home. Some little things like beach chairs and towels need to be updated but after an open minded conversation with the new owners, I was told that they are working hard on all these little details and I am sure they will.
Extremely relaxing place, water sports paradise, terrific grilled fish buffets all that at a really cheap price.Totally worthed.

We spent our final night on St. Martin at the Mercure Simpson Bay just two nights ago and had a wonderful time.

Upon checkin, the staff was very friendly and more than willing to speak English. I speak a bit of French, and they appreciated the effort that I put forth to communicate in the local language, but did not hesitate at all to speak in English.

Our room was spacious, with a large balcony that I wished we had more time to enjoy. The grounds were kept very well - the infinity pool and beach were magnificent!

My fiancee and I met the hotel owner at the front desk when inquiring about a good local restaurant, and he convinced us to eat at the hotel (we only had the half-pension, and dinner was not included). He was very nice to us, provided us with recommendations from the menu, and even gave us complimentary cocktails. We were very impressed with his efforts, and would definitely recommend this hotel (and restaurant) to anyone that we know.

I booked the room directly from Accor website for 99 Euros.

We stayed here March5-12. Mercure Simspon is a small, older, hotel that has new owners who are working to upgrade the rooms and fine tune the resort. We were all inclusive with meals and drinks and enjoyed the casual atmosphere combined with first rate food! Great plate presentation, flexible choices, sauces, really enjoyable. The setting is quite beautiful with a lovely beach lagoon view and infinity edge pool. They know just how to provide great music that is subtle and wafts out to the beach but is not overpowering. Peaceful and serene. Nobody bugging you to play ball but a great activity director if interested. The rooms are very basic but clean and each have a little private patio with fridge and efficiency kitchenette. It is a great 3 star property to base your holiday from being so close to Marigot and the Marina with restaurants and the best shopping. (Who needs Philipsburg.) My partner had been there before 2 x and said the Mercure's food was been very improved from the previous ownership. I will be back and would definitely stay here again. Brush up on French!

WE arrived form Calgary after a 7 hour flight,arriving at 8:00A.M.(their time).Upon checking in, we were informed that our rooms would not be available until 3:00P.M. Being tired and very sweaty,we were told that our luggagecould be stored in the laundry room until the rooms were ready, One of the couples had the expensive digital camera stolen out of that room that day,(not a good for a holiday). The room assigned to us was in need of a good cleaning, especially the floor in the bathroom. The pillows on the bedwere very thin and when we asked for an extra pillow to double them up, we were told that we had to wait till next morning. The meals left a bit to be desired in the all inclusive price.i.e. breakfast, only corn flakes for a cereal. Lunch ,a choice of two items, mostly chicken or fish and desert. Dinner same thing two items for the main course. When we arrived for a meal, we were asked for our room number three times a day. A good suggestion would be to provide the guests with braclets (like the ones used in hospitals). the laundry facilities leave a lot to be desired,($7.00 US) to do one load and no dryers,so you have to hang wet clothing all over the room and outside on the hedges and balcony. The staff seemed to give preferential treatment to french speaking patrons until we started to complain. Needless to say ,we were left with a sour taste in our mouthes for the hotel and the island of St. Maartin. and it's very doultfull if we'll ever go back.

why can i say !
all the staff speaks French and English. they are obliging and always with listening. The rooms are very large, cleanliness is exemplary. there is also a large balcony with a refrigerator. The swimming pool is splendid, large and always very clean. Food is excellent from breakfast to dinner, the choice is huge. There are animations every evening. the beach at the edge of the lagoon is splendid with always deckchairs at disposal. To finish, I will never forget these holidays because I met at the hotel Mercure Simson Beach the woman of my life. Since this stay my life changed, and for this reason I will go back each year.

How to make your holiday miserable at Mercure Simson Beach St Maarten!

It may be cheap but it certainly isn't cheerful! Where do I start.... the staff including all managers are rude, unprofessional, cost cutting and ignorant. The hotel itself is rundown with broken safes, broken sun chairs, broken doors and in desperate need of a paint job. None of the staff know what they are doing and could certainly do with attending a customer care/basic manners course. They give you wrong information and then blame you for taking their advice, that's if you can get their attention in the first place! The restaurant - 'the one and only time': if you like your food served cold instead of hot, don't mind waiting an eternity for someone to take your order and like your creme brulee the consistency of scrambled eggs then you should be fine - I, on the other hand, thought it was awful and way over-priced (we weren't on an 'all inclusive', which talking to other guests I'm quite glad - I think they have more choice down the Sally Army!). As for position - the Lagoon is nice and peaceful but we hired a scooter and went to other parts of the Island where beaches/bays were much much nicer - we'll know for next time! Go to Anguilla that is lovely!!

Top Local Tips for Marigot

FUN! Rent a car - there is so much to see on the island, and you will miss most of it without a car.

Aguilla Catemeran Snorkelling trip Terrible waste of money. 5 hours on a Catermaran to and from a speck of sand the size of a football field, off the coast of Aguilla, where the reef is dead from the number of inexperienced tourists who touch and grab the coral for stability from the surge. 3 hours on a beach where you have to rent crappy sun beds and pay $4 for a beer ... this is all after you have paid just over $100 P/P for the excursion. The only positive comment about this day, was the incerdible weather and the views from the Cat while sailing. The weather was the same if we had gone to Mullet Bay Beach and snorkled there for free and the beer at this beach was ice cold and $2 each. BEWARE THE HIGH ENERGY SALES TACTICS OF TOUR PROMOTERS !!! Ask questions to know exactly what you are getting for your $.

Rent a car for the best time Its easy and fun to drive around St. Martin. There are lots of cars, buses and trucks and motorbikes, pedestrians, etc...., so it pretty busy and you need to pay attention and drive carefully. However, there is a lot to see and its great to have a car and be independant. There are lots of local "buses" as well, which I saw but didn't take. I heard they were good to, although I can't vouch for that.
