Historical Traveller Reviews of La Samanna Hotel

Good Hotel, Below average Island

from Paulistano0
We have just returned from our Caribbean vacation. We stayed 3 nights at La Samanna (we were supposed to stay 4, but we didn´t like the island and we anticipated our flight to St Barths). The hotel is good (the best thing is the view from the restaurant), but the island is not ok. It´s not that beautiful and people are not so friendly (they call St Martin the friendly island, but i totally disagree). I spent my last 4 vacations in the Caribbean visiting 4 different places, and St Martin was the worst of all. If you´re going to stay at a very expensive hotel, choose another island to go. Go to St Barths (it combines beautiful beaches, friendly people, shopping and excellent restaurants) or Anguilla (the most beautiful beaches of the Caribbean and very peaceful).

Beautiful hotel

Our vacation in August 2004 was fantastic. We found the staff to be very accomodating. After being highly disappointed with our original rooms (which I understand are all being redone anyway) we were upgraded to a nicer room at the same price. The room was unbelievable and spacious and only steps away from the beach. The concierge made great suggestions on dining on the island. The views from the hotel were incredible and the beach was fantastic.

Heaven on Earth

Stayed for a week in August, 2004. Service was impeccable. Newly restored room was beyond expectations. Private patio and just steps to the beach made it the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. Buffet breakfast was generous and good...and the views from the restaurant are breathtaking...what a way to start the day! Spa was perfect. If you want privacy, serenity, beauty and calm by day...and great restaurants and nightlife in the evening...this is the place for you.

Outstanding resort, outstanding beach, outstanding service!

I can't say enough about this resort. We went in July, and based on a few reviews, we expected to see no beach and have poor service. This couldn't be further from the truth. The beach was beautiful, and the service on the beach and everywhere else at the resort was wonderful. Everyone was very attentive and the concierge did a terrific job directing us to great restaurants, and offered spot-on advice about when to go to town, and where to shop. The spa was amazing, and the gym, though small, was fine. The resort is pleasantly isolated, to rent a car. We were advised to rent before we went and were very happy that we did. If you're a foodie, you'll want to enjoy the many excellent restaurants on the french side of the island. That said, the restaurant at the resort (although pricey) is wonderful. The complementary breakfast buffet defies description (both in quality and volume of food --and views)-- we didn't get hungry again until dinner after eating all that the buffet offered. In summary, St. Martin was okay, the restaurants on the french side were comparable to great restaurants in France, and La Samanna (everything about it) was divine. Enjoy!

Somebody vs nobody

A few years ag, my wife and I stayed at La Samana. The hotel is beautiful, and parts of the beach are great (the other parts are a bit rocky). If one is not a "somebody" at La Samana, one will be treated like a nobody: a room at the far, rocky end of the beach, slow service in the restaurant and registration, etc. Celebrities do stay at La Samana; comparing their treatment to your own (even when money is irrelevant) will not bring joy.

Best hotel in St. Martin

Yes, it's expensive; but it's a beautiful hotel with the best beach on the island. Some areas had rocks, but it's so long that you have a lot of beach to explore. The views are incredible, and we found the service fine. Breakfasts are buffet style with a lot of varieties. For dinner we also recommend "The Chanteclair" and "Tropicana" in Marigot, and "Le Pressoir" in Grand Case. Had great massages, reflexology, and facial at the Spa. They were the best! We'll definitely go back!

Not sure where the negativity of some of the previous reviews came from, our experience was very nice.

Our cliffside room was not worth $525 a night but was nice enough. The beautiful pool and close proximity of the private beach was very nice and really what we felt like we paid for. Were the food and drinks incredibly overpriced? Yes, so we limited our eating at the resort to one dinner and a lunch or two, the rest of the nights we ate in Marigot and had some great experiences, try the Tropicana or La Chanticleer. $15 taxi to the Marigot marina though, less than 5 miles though it gets expensive. Breakfasts were large and free which was nice. Overall we enjoyed it, very good service but in reality we spent more than we did last year staying at Firefly on Mustique and that was all inclusive of food and cheaper per night with better accomodations, just no beach within walking distance. Did we enjoy, yes, will we go back, probably not.

Deplorable service at La Samanna

from A TripAdvisor Member
I just returned from 4 nights at La Samanna and I have never been to a hotel with such poor service - not even close. We were put in a room that had construction being done upstairs from it so they moved us the second day but it took all day to get another suite ready so we were effectively without a room for most of our second day. Every thing we asked for , from shampoo to toilet paper ( one would not think you would need to ask I know...) we had to call at least twice. We asked for a cab, they told us it would pick us up in 10 minutes, after a half hour we walked up the hill to reception and they said they forgot - with no apology, just attitude. We honestly thought we must be on Candid Camera the service was so consistently horrendous. The beds were also not remotely luxurious, and they have no poolside towel service, you get one a day in your room. Not a jacuzzi on the property either.
The only things recomending this hotel are the views, which are amazing, and the food is also good, though a poolside hamburger costs $17.75 I never thought I would be glad to leave St Maarten but they actually made it possible. Just a negative experience frome the moment we arrived.

Privacy......but what else???

No airport greeter as promised. Snobby and unfriendly staff. no VCR in room as stated. Doberman dogs patrolled the property. Very scary. Martian-like staff member put out clouds of anti-mosquito repellant via a mobile machine on a nightly basis. A pulmonary catastrophe. No piano player as promised for Friday and Saturday night. (we were told the piano was broken) Six dollars for 15 minutes on the internet? The property is hilly and slanted giving the impression you are always about to fall down. Despite the anti-mosquito repellant, we were bitten alive. The hot-cold on the shower cannot be adjusted. You want privacy? you got it...but at what price???

Top Local Tips for Marigot

Great restaurants! Make sure you dine at Mario's Bistro, Don Camillo, Le Chanteclaire, Le Belle Epoque, Tropicana and drive over to Grand Case and experience one of the Lo Lo shacks on the boardwalk.

Dining St Martin has great restaurants many with a French flair> La Cigale (expensive) Tropicana (friendly and reasonable), La Pressior (great food and service). Sarasota (Dutch side and lovely), Mario's ( great food and view), The Bridge (Caribbean local flavor- try lobster!)

When it comes to food ... Definitely try the French food ~ amazingly tasty!
