The best place to come home to!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I spent the week of August 21 in Grand Case at Hotel L'Esplanade, and after touring the entire island, I don't think there is a finer, more relaxing place to come back to! Kristin, Patricia, and the entire staff could not have been nicer...and more helpful. Our room was an oversize loft, tastefully decorated, clean, wonderful views, and so much more (felt like we had a small house). In fact, the furniture in our room was something new Kristin was trying out (from Bali), and I think she made a great choice! The grounds are well maintained with beautiful gardens and a very private pool area. The hotel itself sits on a hillside, but Grand Case beach (very quiet, peaceful, relaxing, with beautiful views and turquoise colored water) is a short walk down the hill, or a short drive (if you prefer). The best part of the hotel is it is small...only 24 rooms. So, when you want to be alone, have privacy and relax, you can!

I do suggest renting a car (or open air Jeep which we had), so you can see the entire island and sample the different towns, shops, restaurants and beaches. Orient beach (much more active and built up) is about a 10 or 15 minute drive with wonderful views along the way. Pinel island (Yellow beach) is a short boat ride and worth the trip. Lotterie Farm is a fun venture for healthful eating, and Marigot has a great market Wednesday through Saturday.

The town of Grand Case is considered restaurant row, so no need to drive when going out for dinner. The only thing I would suggest is going a little earlier in the season, as some of the better restaurants were closing (Hurricane season). Le Cottage was still open, and if you want great wine, great service, and a great meal go there!

Now, to the two sides of the island. We traveled twice to the Dutch side—Phillipsburg (streets torn up...rebuilding etc. for the cruise ships), and to Simpson Bay. And I do have to say, the French side is the nicer, cleaner, more tropical, friendlier, and less commercialized side. And, after 2 trips to that side of the island, we didn't need to go back. We realized we were in the best place on the island—Grand Case and Hotel L'Esplanade. It was great to come home to after our many outings.

What more can I say, but ENJOY! We will definitely be back!

The Only Choice on the Island

from acumom
After a month of research, L'Esplanade seemed like the only choice from reading several travel review sites. The place was amazing!!!!!! Don't let the lack of beachside locale sway your decision.
The attention to guests, especially from Patricia, was incredible. The staff will take care of everything for you. They helped with reservations, rental cars, even checking to see if my sister in law and I got lost on a crazy shopping expedition in Marigot. They even called us when my husband forgot his passport in the room after checkout, They tracked us down in 5 minutes after we departed the property on the way to the airport!!! All I can say is wow!!!
The rooms were soooo clean. The studio kitchen had Corian countertops. The shower was immaculate. Not a spot anywhere!!! The pool was beautiful, the pool bathroom was spottless. We also had room 18 and the view was gorgeous. The landscaping was the nicest. Every detail in the property was perfecto!! The housekeeping staff was very kind and incredible.
I would also like to recommend La Source resturant. It is healthy, clean and the chicest place on the island. All the hip shopkeepers ate there. There is no other place like it on the island. The owner and staff were great.
The pharmacy in Plaza Caribes in Cul de Sac had the best selection of French cosmetics and she had the best and biggest selection of herbal and natural medicines as well.
Phillipsburg was filthy and really nothing except a million jewelry shops. The casinos were dirty ,too.
The butterfly farm was amazing and peaceful and so was Dona Bryheil's studio.
You will see a magnificent white horse on the way to these places.

If you are a picky picky traveller and like things to be top notch, these places are for you!!!

Caribbean Boutique Hotel

Beautiful hotel - boutique style with fabulous views of the Caribbean (and Anguilla in the distance). Walking distance to many great restaurants and beach. We definitely recommend renting a car for the entire trip and exploring the island.
The lofts are well worth it for the extra expense - spacious, very romantic accomodation. If you are staying in a studio (which we did on our first 3 nights), ask for one with good views (room 18 was gorgeous with one of the best balconies ever!). Great kitchens, swimming pool and gardens. Everything is beautifully kept. Staff are fabulous.
In Grand Case, Calmos Cafe is a great bar for the evening. French Bread is the place for breakfast. There are too many good restaurants to list! If possible, take a day trip (or more) to Anguilla - much quieter than St Martin with spectacular beaches and only 15 mins ($10 each way) by ferry.

Wonderful Hotel

My husband and I spend a week in St. Martin at Hotel L'Esplanade. We were extremely impressed. The room, as all the rooms, overlook Grand Case with a very good oceanview and lovely sunsets. Every morning we enjoyed breakfast on our terrace enjoying our view and the island breezes. Our room, an oversized loft, was extremely large in size; it was extremely clean, modern, cool, and very tastefully decorated. The hotel grounds are landscaped for beauty and privacy. The pool area is also beautiful. The service was excellent. There are dozens of great restaurants in Grand Case. To visit the beaches, Marigot, and the Dutch side, renting a car is recommended. This was the best Carribean hotel we have ever stayed at.

believe the reviews for once

We had heard that the hotels and service in St Maarten/St Martin were terrible. There were a lot of "high end", expensive hotels that were in poor shape and had poorly trained staff. After an exhaustive search, we took a flier and went w/ Hotel L'Esplanade. Whew-wee. This one is as good as the reviews on here say. Even the locals (be it dive masters, restaurant staff, sailing crew) concurred that this hotel has the right stuff - and you didn't get ripped off for that honor either. It was very clean; service was prompt, professional, comprehensive; and location to eateries is surpassed by none. This should be at the top of everyone's consideration. And lastly, the French side is much better than the Dutch side - so you have the best of the best, here.

Believe the reviews - This hotel is fantastic!

I booked a room for my wife and I at the Hotel L'Esplanade for the 4th of July weekend based mainly on the reviews posted on this site; we were not disappointed. The hotel is perfect for couples who are looking for a small, clean, quiet, beautiful property with a helpful staff. The views of Grand Case, Mountains, and the Sea from our private terraces were amazing. The hotel is located on the hillside above Grand Case, within walking distance to the majority of the best restaurants on the island. There is a beach you can access as part of your stay with the property but I would highly recommend you to rent a car and make the short drive to Orient beach. The hotel would be fantasitc if only for the rooms and grounds, but little things help set apart; like a staff that were more than happy to to recommend/set up dinner/activity reservations, a beach towel service, free parking, and a welcome basket of goodies... We will be back!

Fantastic Room!

After much debate, I got a deluxe loft at L'Esplanade. WOW! One of the best rooms I've ever had in the Caribbean. There were a few times I wished they had room service, but overall the hotel was fantastic.

Perfection

from kenan15
I did quite a bit of research in planning our trip to St. Martin, and I'm so glad I did. The Hotel L'Esplanade was wonderful and every bit as good as the reviews on tripadvisor made it sound. We arrived to the open-air lobby and learned we had been given a free upgrade to a deluxe loft room. The room was enormous, with a half bathroom, kitchen, and living room downstairs, and bedroom and bathroom upstairs. The wood ceilings were charming, everything was perfectly clean, and they even left a basket with french bread, tea, and various snacks. The balcony was large, private, and had a breathtaking view of the ocean. The landscaping was among the best I've ever seen.
We were somewhat concerned about the hotel's lack of adjacent beach front. As it turned out, we didn't mind the short walk down a path to the beach. It was good to get a little exercise after all the fabulous French food in Grand Case! The hotel is affiliated with L'Amandier Beach, which allows guests to use it's padded lounge chairs for free. L'Amandier is quite small but charming, with a small pool and nice bar as well. We expected to try out lots of beaches, but chose to spend most of our days there.
The wonderful restaurants in Grand Case were just a 5-10 minute stroll from the hotel. We especially enjoyed Le Pressoir. Have the staff of the hotel make a reservation. They will reserve the best tables for you at any restaurant, many of which literally have water lapping at the edge of the dining balconies. I would recommend this hotel to everyone, as it made for the perfect Caribbean getaway!

Possibly the best hotel in St. Martin

from l0ve2fly
We just returned from a 5-night stay in a Deluxe Loft at L'Esplanade. I cannot say enough nice things about the hotel - the property, accomodations, location, staff and amenities were perfect. This is not a stuffy, La Samanna-type luxury hotel - there isn't even a front gate because the property is secluded without feeling exclusive. It is simple, laid-back and homey, and very comfortable. The hotel is small - just 25 rooms - and in the off-season, you may go days without seeing more than 1 other guest. Located halfway between Marigot and Orient Beach, nothing on the French Side was more than a 10-minute drive. The main drag in Grand Case is a 5-minute downhill stroll - you really appreciate being up on the hill when you get down in the craziness next to the ocean. After speaking to guests at the Grand Case Beach Club, le Petit Plage and Alamanda, I am even more convinced we made the perfect choice.

t miss this resort!

This A+ hotel is wonderful especially for couples, but we had a teenager with us and he loved the food and beach. Our trip just ended March 12 2004. The place is immaculate and gorgeous. We have no complaints at all. We rented a car which was great at night ( but not really necessary) and preferred to stay at the beach where we had free passes from the hotel. (The L'Amandier Beach Club. ) Gorgeous beach!!!
The walk is short from the hotel. You can grab a light breakfast at the L'Esplanade hotel or walk about 5 mins to the Sunset Cafe which is great and on the water. Lots of breakfast items and what a view. We liked Spiga and Rainbow OK but La Marine for dinner outdid them all!
Best view and French food. Try the scallops in vanilla cream sauce or ask them to substitute shrimp! You can get a cheap lunch at the BBQ places near the beach . Just a short walk. Really good! The hotel has a few free drink passes to the better restaurants so see the bartender who is more than helpful. Like the owners, he is VERY informed and booked us a water view table at the very new La Marine. We had a loft unit at the hotel and a view that you could not beat. This place is perfect and we plan to go back! Better beach than the one in Maui at the Hyatt. Don't miss this hotel! If you miss your pizza and salad try The California at lunch. I loved the cocoanut rum drink that ended the meal compliments of the house. They have an intenet computer available for a teen and it is right on the water. Ok back to reality!

Top Local Tips for Grand Case

So many choices! Great dining - plan ahead and make reservations. Many of the restaruants have great web sites. Look at www.bestgastronomy.com

Grand Case many restaurants even up on exchange--dollar for euro

Head to Calmos Go! It's got a great bar with really cool guys or you can sit on chairs in front of the ocean and hear live music. The bartender, Alex was a wonderful person and we enjoyed closing up shop with a nice shot of rum with him.
