My wife and I just spent a week at Coconut Bay Resort and Spa St. Lucia during the week of July 27-August 1st 2005. The hotel was very big and the staff was very cordial. We arrived immediately to the resort which is minutes from the airport. The facilities themselves were very modern, I especially like their gym. There was some construction going on, but it didn't intefer with our vacation. We were very dissapointed with the beach of the resort, not good for swimming, we saw several people attempt to bathe at the beach only to leave frustrated due to alot of seaweed. My wife and I ventured to another beach, standing facing the hotels beach, turn right and walk about 1 1/2 mile down the beach, go through some wood pillings and continue another 1/2 mile and you will find a public beach used by the locals, which was beautiful, there was a small mountain island directly across from it. I managed to snorkel there and see plenty of fish, water was very clear minus seaweed. Hotel is great for families with children as it has a two water slides. The entertainment was lacking and there isn't much to do at the hotel itself, but plenty of excursions to other towns nearby and sites like the sulphur springs, diamond waterfall, and piton mountains. Bring plenty of cash as the island is expensive, and trips to the capitol Castries can run about $150-$180 US, yes that a hundred and fifty US dollars. Your best bet is hooking up with whoever brings you from the airport and make a deal with them, the cheapest offer we received was from a cab driver name Albert for $40 one way, $80 roundtrip. At the hotel ask for skeeter, selma, or leon for special treatment, they can get you anything you like. Ian a driver of the Sulphur springs excursion was cool as well. Overall not a bad stay, got to relax alot, beach to yourself for nice long walks. Food was ok, reservation for Italian and Asian restaurant required, food and service excellent.

This place was the worst experience me and my husband have ever had. We went there on our honeymoon and they dint even treat us special. All they did was ignore us and charge $150 to go shopping in the capital of St. Lucia, Castries. That is the only shopping close to the resort. When you are at the resort, you are stuck. There is nothing around there, unless you want to drive an hour and a half away. The food was horrible and you have to book a day ahead of time if you want to eat at their 2 other restaurants. They refused us for dinner and there was no one in the restaurant. the front desk staff confronted us when we decided to leave the resort just two days of staying there! It was depressing and unfinished in it's opening. Dont ever stay here!!! Go to a Sandals and thats it!!

Top Local Tips for Vieux Fort

Savan Stables ~ Just down the road from Coconut bay Resort and Spa St. Lucia is the perfect setting for horseback riding lovers, and those intersted in a first time experience. We were very lucky to find such a wonderful stable in the caribbean. Neil, AKA "Small" is the owner and trail tour guide. There are trials available for both beginners and advanced riders and they vary from from 1 to 3 hours long. Small met us on our beach with his horses tacked and ready for our wonderful adventure. Both western and english riding is available. His horses are not the typical horses that I have seen over and over again in the carribean. They are smaller horses, bred for their sturdynedd in the mountains and they are well taken care of. To reach Neil when you get to St. Lucia you can call his cell phone: 718 1261 Enjoy :)

Go yourself Heard a lot of negatives about driving yourself around, personally enjoyed the challenge and gave us opportunity to visit places the normal tours don't do

Hire a car and get exploring Hire a car... and buy a guide book before you leave. Get yourself to Pidgeon Island, see the waterfalls and volcano's!
