Historical Traveller Reviews of Ottley's Plantation Inn Hotel

Beautiful - but poor service

from MattDC
Stayed in mid February - peak time for the hotel but: reception closed at 7pm and the restaurant had rigid opening hours. The owners are friendly, but the reception staff are unhelpful and one of them was rude. If it was not for the STUNNING hotel grounds and expert gardeners I would suggest giving this place a miss.

Exotic, relaxing and friendly

from CatznKidz
We visited Ottley's Plantation in October 2004 for our 20th wedding anniversary. This is a gorgeous place, very low key, relaxing and refined. The owners are very friendly and go out of their way to make each guest feel comfortable. We felt as though we were in Africa with the views of Mt. Liamuiga and the occasional monkeys sighted in the treetops. The resort and the island itself are very exotic and unspoiled. The staff did fuss over us even to the point of making sure our snorkling flippers fit just right!
The inn arranged a guide for us to take us in a Range Rover to the base of Mt. Liamuiga and to hike with us to the top of the volcanic crater. It was something I will always remember and the massage afterwards in the Mango Spa in the rainforest next to the inn was amazing too.
Treat yourself and go to Ottley's...Try the Brimley's Vanilla Rum while sitting by the pool. This is the real deal and you will not be disappointed.

Lovely hotel, but......

We spent 5 nights at Ottley's for our honeymoon - the location was wonderful, with lovely views and our own plunge pool. What was disappointing were the attitudes, at times, of the owners.

We were given the dinner menu after breakfast, and asked to select our meal for that evening, which we declined to do.

On the last day, there was a power failure, and we had to shower and pack in the dark! This was not acceptable bearing in mind the price we paid. I asked the owner's daughter to discount part of our bill, she said she would love to, but couldnt. Why not - she co-owns the place!
We were also told we would receive an offer of 'free nights' through the post - which, unsurprisingly, has not materialised.

The place needs new owners who are customer-focused!

The Owners need some Customer Service 101 Training

from A TripAdvisor Member
Yes it is true, Ottley's is a beautifully restored old sugar cane plantation home with lots of beautiful furnishings, however on a recent visit, that is about where it ended. The local island workers were decent and hospitable, however the owners and expats there, particularily Ruth and Art, need a course in customer service. They are snooty former East Coasters who believe questions from their customers are beneath them and it is evident in their surly responses both over the phone and in person.
For the cost of what you pay to stay here, you CAN do MUCH better and I strongly suggest that the owners wise up to the competition.
Another drawback here is Ottley's is remote and is a hike from the nearest beach. This did not bother us that much as we wanted peace and quiet, but for those who don't, Ottleys is not your place.

We really enjoyed Ottleys

from A TripAdvisor Member
We've just returned from a 7 nights in St Kitts and thoroughly enjoyed our time at Ottleys. We booked the hotel direct and got a great deal which included all breakfasts, Sunday brunch and 5 evening meals and also included a catamaran trip to Nevis and a round the island tour.

The grounds are simply stunning and our room, which was a detached stone villa with terraces and plunge pool, was excellent (to be honest I would advise couples to go for just half of one of these units providing you get the half with the plunge pool!).

We found the owners extremely friendly and very accommodating - our flight back to the UK was badly delayed and they offered to let us stay for an extra night at no charge should the flight have ended up being pushed back to the following day. In the meantime the front desk continued to phone the airport for departure updates and keep us advised accordingly - this meant that we left for the airport 3 hours later than we should have done and still checked in plenty of time for our return flight.

All the staff and to be honest everyone we met in St Kitts (with the exception of one of the receptionists and she seemed to be like that with everyone, including the owners!) were extremely helpful, genuinely friendly and made a tremendous effort to make our holiday a great one - which it was.

I guess you're probably now wondering why we didn't give Ottley's 5 Stars - so here's why

The location whilst picturesque is - as other reviewers have commented - a good $40 return cab fare away from Basseterre and the main beaches (they do provide a shuttle but its only twice a day, so its not very flexible). It is also very, very quiet so if you want entertainment you do need to go further afield to get it.

Whilst the food is very good, we never had a meal at Ottleys that we thought was "WOW", which, given its reputation, was a little bit of a let down. It was also a little annoying being asked for your evening meal selection at breakfast, but in the end we had no problems just saying that we weren't sure yet and that we'd decide later. One meal in particular was pretty unimpressive and we mentioned it to Nancy (one of the owners) but to be fair to the owners the next day a bottle of champagne and a note arrived at our room which was a nice touch.

These minor comments aside, however, overall we had a great time at Ottleys, would recommend it, and will certainly return there should we decide to revisit St Kitts in the future.

Wonderful Time!

from apmejen
We visited Ottley's in February 2004, what a fabulous time we had. It was luxurious and soothing. The food was incredible, we had a wonderful time with the staff, our waitresses were fabulous, the owners full of information. The location and the view were outstanding. As it is perched up on a hill you could look down over the valley. The shuttle service is wonderful and relaxed. Ask to go to the beach. We were dropped off on a strip of sand with a beach hut and nothing to do but sit and enjoy the sand and some caribe beer.

We loved St. Kitts, the atmosphere and the people. A trip to the Golden Lemon is a must as is golfing at the course near the Marriott.

Big, big disappointment

from Arborfieldmember
We spent one week on week at Ottleys after having spent a week on Nevis. The location, grounds, house, etc are all beautiful. We had a wonderful room, with private patio and plunge pool and great views. But that's where the good review ends. The owners seem to be playing at running the place. The service was seriously dreadful ... even though, for at least half of our week, the place was pretty empty. The food was consistently dreadful, wine list very limited, service slow and surly. Other irritations which take away from the supposed luxury status of the place (1) we were on a full-board package but this means that at breakfast you're allowed one rasher of bacon, one sausage, etc which you have to sign for at the end of the meal and which presumably you have to pay extra for if you feel particularly hungry one morning! (2) at the end of breakfast, they bring round that evening's dinner menu and ask you to choose what you want! Both made it feel like a cheap end of the market, package holiday.

s Plantation

Just returned from St Kitts and had a wonderful time. We stayed at Ottley's Plantation and would highly recommend it. The accommodations were spacious and clean (had a cottage with plunge pool)and very private; the food was excellent and the staff was friendly and helpful; the grounds are beautiful and saw many monkeys in the adjacent rain forest. Went to 2 beaches and Friar's was our favorite. Climbed the volcano which was a very difficult hike but very scenic also -- went with Earl's tours and had a great guide, Brent! Just can't say enough about Ottley's Plantation. It was the best vacation we've ever had in the Carribbean. We met a couple who had been at the Golden Lemon and they hated it. Ottley's serves a great rum punch and their 5 course meals are amazing.

This is the best place in the world. Love the owners - ask them why and how they started the resort - and the friendly staff. Been to Ottley's twice and could not ask for more. Best food on the island as well. Tried the Golden Lemon (Good) Ballahoo (So so) and Fisherman's Warf (Not as good) for diinner, but really the food at Ottley's is as good as it gets. My favorite place to eat besides Paris.... Keep meaning to try Rawlins lunch buffet, which gets accolades from guests at Ottleys (ottley's lunch menu is sort of small) but its hard to force myself to leave my favorite lounging chair overlooking the green grounds and blue sea..

Paradise for a few days......

from wolfman64
The place is just stunning. Everything is is as if you wake up one day in a huge comfortable bed, cozy and warm, open the windows, look into a botanical garden, think you are all alone, being pampered by massage therapist, enjoy great cooking, take a swim in this great How much can paradise cost? This is a unique place. this is a defintely tasteful place in a world full of junk and plastic!!! And I understand why people return here and keep it in their mind forever.....its worth each penny!!!! and even more!
