The location for this hotel is its best quality. It's close to many tourist spots; we walked everywhere. The rooms are small and clean, but noisy. TV is not great. Elevator is slow. Continental breakfast was OK.

The Ihp Hotel Plaza De Armas in Old San Juan was best served by its location. The rooms were on the small side, but were clean. Rooms were noisy due to them all opening on a multi-story courtyard. Also, a frosted window over the door allowed in light all night long. Elevator did not work during our stay, and staircase was very narrow and winding. Hard to negotiate with large suitcases. Not a real value in our opinion.

Service; the owner and the staff provided us excellent service. arrival was timely and they had evidence of our internet booking. The owner was particularly interested in why we were there and introduced us to the new coffee shop on the corner that served Alto Grande coffee. They agreed to care for our bags the following week when we retuned from our cruise as we were not flying out till late afternoon. - this was extremely helpful for us.

Accommodation: was a great example of the character of Old San Juan that has been maintained at a reasonable to good level. unfortunately we did not have hot water when we were there, not fixable whilst there but they did offer us a change of room / access to a hot shower. The room was cleaned to a high standard each day we were there.

Position: is relatively centre of Old San Juan with all amenities in a very easy walk.

Price range: reasonable

our overall experience was very pleasant and would have no hesitation at recommending this hotel to other travelers

When I travel, it has to be all about location, location, location. You can not beat the location of the Plaza De Armas, in the heart of beautiful old San Juan. The staff is more than friendly. The hotel quaint and everything was neat, clean and spotless. I was particularly impressed by the warm friendliness expressed towards me by every staff member. Really was a great visit.

Top Local Tips for San Juan

Think carefully about a rental car -- all being said, an expensive proposition I'm the kind that likes to have a rental car so I can go where I want when I want, but I'd skip the rental car if I went to San Juan again. I stayed at the Hilton for 3 nights (a resort) and didn't see any point in leaving since I was there for the beach, so the rental car was wasted there (and I had to pay to valet it 3 nights), and then I stayed in Old San Juan for 2 nights and again, didn't need to leave since you sightsee right in the area. Driving in San Juan was confusing at best, and downright frustrating for the most part -- and I am a city driver! The signage is confusing (and I know basic Spanish) and the driving is like being in Italy -- all bets are off! Even after a week I was never really confident when making turns that I wasn't going to drive into oncoming traffic! The streets are narrow and I scraped my compact rental car, plus the potholes come out of nowhere -- I was actually a little afraid that I had bottomed out after a particularly bad one.

get a good map Once you get off the main highways, the signs are awful. Even some of the main highways are poorly marked (i.e. the highway running in to Old SanJuan suddenly becomes a different numbered highway on yourmap, and it's not clear, but there are no signs telling you you're entering Old San Juan.) By a good map, and don't rely on the map in your travel guide. The streets in Old San Juan also aren't marked (some buildings have signs at the intersections, but many intersections lack signs completely). Take your map with you while exploring Old San Juan. You'll need it until you get your bearings.

Go in the off-season We went in the middle of August after the tourist season had died out, and it was absolutely the best time to go. The weather was great, the people in San Juan are wonderful, especially in Old San Juan. Even the police are mindful of tourists and very willing to help.
